What you'll do

Milen will offer attendees the experience of a real Ethiopian coffee ceremony. We’ll learn a bit about traditional roasting and preparation methods, from the lighting of fragrant frankincense, to the gentle pan-roasting of authentic Ethiopian coffee beans, to the technique of heating and pouring water from the jebena, the traditional clay water vessel. Attendees are encouraged to bring their curiosity and questions. Over coffee and light snacks, we'll chat about international influences of Ethiopian cuisine, as well as the country's unique history. Attendees will be able to practice pouring coffee from the jebena as well. After the coffee ceremony, guests will enjoy an Ethiopian lunch buffet, with a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes.

Chris

Hi. I’m Christopher, a member of the Atlas Obscura community I’m a lifelong coffee enthusiast and I roast coffee on the side. I’ve always enjoyed a quality cup of joe, but my eyes were opened fifteen years ago when I attended my first coffee cupping. Since then, I’ve sought out unique and delicious coffee experiences around the world. I’ll be co-hosting this event with Milen Medhane, owner of Kaffa Coffee & Wine Bar in Seattle. Milen is a true master of the Ethiopian coffee ceremony. A scientist by training, Milen has owned and operated Kaffa Coffee for several years.
