What you'll do

Come and visit my textiles studio where I specialising in free machine embroidered corsetry and accessories. I will demonstrate my process from initial idea, through inspiration and sketching to free stitching on tweed and silks. Wither a swimming fish or flying bee my sumptuous embroidered pieces are then made into bodices, cushions and small accessories. As well as embroidery I have a keen interest in stays, corsets and costume and we will look at the construction of historically based undergarments and how they shaped the body. The studio is full of my work at various stages so there’s always something interesting to look at and there will be the opportunity to view various finished items and products. My space is only open by appointment so this is a great chance to see behind the scene.

Learn more about Mairi

Mairi

I am a full time textile artist & experienced educator. My embroidery work focuses on taking the smallest detail of flora and fauna, examining how it can be realised in rich colours which catch the light, and transforming it into a beautiful portable, practical or wearable work of art. My work becomes a little treasure reminding the wearer or owner of how precious our wildlife is and how surprising colours can be found in everyday creatures and plants. I also have a keen interest in historic corsetry, stays & costume, making various outfits for local historic dance groups & individuals. I have had the privilege of working extensively in outreach and support to the community, providing sewing, stitching and making classes to all types of students. I believe that making something of your own provides a bit of magic and pride
