While originally from Canada, I've lived in Oaxaca for over thirty years. I am passionate about the relationship between nature and culture; agriculture began, right here in the Valle de Tlacolula, about 8,000 years ago. There is no better way to explore this unique eco-system than on the back of a horse.
I've owned and trained horses for twenty years and 15 years ago I began leading guided riding tours. With my son, in 2019, I rode 360 kms. in six days from my Rancho Pitaya to the Pacific coast of Oaxaca.
I am a certified holistic health therapist and have been teaching equitation for 10 years. I live with 14 horses ( 5 of them born on my ranch), 11 hens, 4 dogs & 2 cats. I love birdwatching and over forty species can be seen here.
I nurture a small nursery focused on cultivating native agaves for transplant back into the local lands.

It's clear Mary Jane is so experienced that she's happy to modify the ride and the trails to suit her guests (including some horse-riding gear to keep the thorns and brush away from our ankles). My friend and I were novices, and yet we had the most perfect time meandering through the community fields behind her rancho. The facilities are wonderful, the horses healthy and happy, and the rest of the dogs, hens, and even birds around the property clearly love how she takes care of her land.  Mary Jane is also knowledgeable of the area and ecosystem, and answered every one of our questions.  We had an excellent time, and would easily go back and potentially stay at the ranch with a larger group! Thanks so much Mary Jane!

It was a very pleasant experience, nice scenery with Mary Jane’s explanations on different plants on the way. You can see the horses are very well taken care of and they behave well. There were also ponies for kids and it was lovely to see them. It would have been even nicer if it had started a bit earlier, as the day got pretty hot towards the end of the walk. Recommend for anyone who wants to see outside of the Oaxaca central.

Wonderful experience! The ranch is beautiful, the horses are well-trained, the trail is scenic. Mary Jane is a great guide. She arranged for the taxi to pick me up seamlessly and even instructed the driver to take me to a few extra scenic spots on the way back -- well worth it!

I had a great time riding the Agave Trail with Mary Jane. I ride regularly at home, and I really appreciated the fact that my horse was responsive and well trained. The ride was beautiful and passed by traditional farmlands as well as open countryside with wild agaves and many other native plants. Mary Jane shared a lot of interesting information about the local environment during our ride as well. The ranch is lovely and peaceful, and the horses are well cared for. I definitely hope to return next time I'm in Oaxaca!

So can I just say how amazing this trip was. I got to ride a wonderful horse along the picturesque country side. Mary Jane arranged to have a car come get me at my Airbnb and the ride was about 30 mins. Her ranch is beautiful with lots of cactus growing. Her horses look extremely well taken care of and look very healthy. We rode along the hillside and saw lots of cool birds, agave, cactus, in an absolutely stunning view. Her dogs even came along for the journey! Afterwards, she had fresh juice, mezcal, and cookies waiting for me. For an extra fee, got to see Árbol del Tule on the way back, the thickest tree in the world! Overall, A+ experience!

What a magical experience it was to ride through the agave trail on horseback. The experience was amazing. I felt very comfortable even though I am not a very experienced rider. The horses were well behaved, the guide was educated on the environment we rode through and experienced in horse training and comfort. I couldn't not stop smiling the entire time. Such a beautiful place with a gorgeous animal. I would love to do it all over again and would highly recommend.
