What you'll do

You will spend the first part of your day in close contact with the quarry men of Carrara, visiting a marble quarry, watching the excavation processes of the rough blocks and learning how the experts transform a rock into a beautiful artwork or piece of furniture. Lunch will be served in a small restaurant overlooking the quarry where you'll taste all the local products such as the famous Lardo di Colonnata (a special type of salumi aged in a marble basin). In the afternoon we will drive down to Carrara, the marble capital of the World, to visit its centre and see all the monuments and historic buildings where marble found its best applications. Later in the evening we'll go to the neighboring city of Massa and hike our way inside the famous Castello Malaspina, a XII century castle overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, to enjoy an aperitif while we wait for the sunset.

Learn more about Nicola

Nicola

I have a bachelor degree in Geology from the University of Pisa and I've been working in or around marble quarries for the past 12 years analyzing, manufacturing and selling natural stone products. Marble has been part of the Italian DNA from centuries, all the way back to the Romans who use it to build the foundations of their Empire and to create some of the most beautiful sculptures and monuments. There are a lot of fascinating facts and knowledge to be learn by exploring a marble quarry, understanding the everyday hard work of the "cavatori" (quarry men) that for generations have risked their lives to extract this precious material from the mountains around Carrara.
