What you'll do

I will meet you at the end of a dirt road near Rio Claro, about 30 minutes from Golfito (hotel pickups can be arranged). Meeting time is 9 a.m. We will walk 1.5 km along the Rio Sorpresa, crossing the shallow water 6 times. We will see a good variety of birds and basilisk lizards. Arriving at home base, we stop for a coffee and washrooms. We will pick up a snack wrapped in banana leaves to take along. Refreshed, we continue on into my rain-forest. The trail is narrow at first, but it soon opens into a wide, flat part of the river floodplain. Here we can spend time learning about plants and looking for frogs, birds, and monkeys. The trail goes up a small hill before descending to the Rio Cataratas. The rocks can be slippery here, but we can already hear the first waterfall. We enjoy a swim in the large pool and strong swimmers will be able to swim right behind the fall and enjoy a water massage. The best is yet to come, as we climb a small but steep trail to two more pools. The first is very deep and for perfect swimming. The last pool has the most dramatic split waterfall over 60 feet high. After swimming and exploring we retrace our steps to home base for a wonderful lunch. After lunch you can relax in a hammock and check out the hummingbird and vegetable gardens (we make shampoo from ginger plants!) before returning to your car at 2 p.m. Walking distance is 6 km in total.

Learn more about Fiona

Fiona

HI, I'm Fiona! I am the author and illustrator of over 15 books, including "Wildlife of Costa Rica" and "A field guide to the mammals of Central America and southeast Mexico". I've been guiding nature tours around the world for 32 years. I recently bought an amazing property in southwest Costa Rica with some of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen. Unlike most of Costa Rica, this region really IS off the beaten path as I am the first "Gringa" to move into the valley. I'd love to show you my hidden gem, and along the way I'll tell you about the forest and share my love for this piece of land. I know where to find many wild creatures, bats in tents and more. We will also have time to see my hummingbird, butterfly and bat gardens, and our organic vegetable beds.

Where you'll be

The waterfalls are on private land and the forest trails can only be accessed by our guests. We limit the number of visitors to 8 per session so you feel absorbed in nature, and so that you can learn about local wildlife during your hike. Although a few Costa Ricans know about these incredible waterfalls, they are opening to foreigners for the first time this year. After lunch you'll see our gardens and have time to relax in a hammock.
