What you'll do

Meet in The Eating Gorilla Cafe, Penrhyndeudraeth, for a short introductory briefing over refreshments. Set up each participant's Smartphone with the scavenger hunt app, over local WiFi. Set off on foot (5-minute walk) to the scavenger hunt location. The outdoor activity takes place over a couple of hours, all within the 24 hectares of Gwaith Powdwr Nature Reserve. Participants use the scavenger hunt app to find clues and solve puzzles whilst exploring a wide range of fascinating natural and historical locations and artifacts with which this unique post-industrial nature reserve abounds. The site was used historically for manufacturing high explosives for quarrying, mining, and ammunition. Much has been long since demolished, and the site sensitively restored to a natural landscape rich in flora and fauna. The activity leads participants to find independently many of the fascinating hidden attributes of this varied site, and at each of various "challenge" points, solve riddles, puzzles and quests. It turns an otherwise "nice walk in the woods" into an entertaining set of challenges that can be tackled competitively or collaboratively, rather like the style of Channel 4 TV's "The Crystal. The site has firm tracks and pathways, through some remote parts can involve access by steeper grassy paths, gradients and steps. Dogs are allowed on leads, as there are sheep grazing.
