What you'll do

On our Wild Island Exploration of Wassaw Island, we will take you into the Ossabaw Sound and travel up Adams Creek and Odingsell River until we reach Wassaw Island. Along the way we see amazing birds, bald eagles and dolphin, maybe an alligator or sea turtle as well. Wassaw is a beautiful, virgin (never cut, never farmed) barrier island that is part of the Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. We'll get off at the Federal Dock and walk through 6 ecotones and old burn damage for about 1/2 mile until we get to the beach. The beach here is fantastic, very few people ever visit it. We find great shells, sand dollars, sponges, corals who knows what else. This is my favorite program to give, it's amazing! We will then spend some time on the beach traveling north and south looking at birds, beach combing etc... Then, we will walk back across the island to the boat and continue our program.

Garret

I'm the Executive Director for Wilderness Southeast a local non-profit celebrating 45 years. I have worked throughout North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and now coastal Georgia doing environmental education for 21 years. I enjoy taking people out into the local environment and showing them plants, animals, land and water they will not otherwise see. It's important to let people connect with the natural world so that they will understand how delicate it is.

What's included

Transportation
We will travel in 21 foot Steiger craft. A very comfortable, stable craft for this area.
Equipment
Lifejackets are provided.

Where you'll be

We will travel into the Ossabaw Sound explaining that we are on the edge of a 65 mile piece of wilderness. Then we will make our way up Adams creek into the Odingsell river, on our way stopping several times to see native american shell middens and explain some of the local history. Next, we reach Wassaw Island, a beautiful, virgin barrier island. We will walk across the island until we reach an amazing secluded beach, few people ever visit.
