What you'll do

Please read carefully before booking and choose which option best suits you. Option 1: This tour option is mostly demonstration. I will have a log cut into a blank for the bowl demonstration when you arrive. If the weather is good I will show you where I cut the wood and how I chose where to cut. I will explain about wood selection methods and the do's and don'ts. I will then demonstrate how a bowl is turned from greenwood. You will be observing only. Common questions I get are: Where in the tree do bowls come from? How are they cut into their rough shape? How is the wood seasoned? How do you stop the wood cracking? The answers sometimes surprise people. ---------------------------------------------------- Option 2: I will give you a brief tour of my wood drying areas and workshops and explain the process from log to finished pieces. I will then mount small blank pieces for you and your group to turn into basic cylinders (not bowls). Please wear clothes than can get dusty or dirty. I use professional machines and tools so you will be getting a top notch view into a Woodturner's world. You will be shown around active woodworking workshops so there will be sawdust and wood shavings everywhere. Both options should take approximately one and a half hours. Hopefully there will be an opportunity to view some finished pieces afterwards for a few minute

Learn more about David

David

I am a member of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland and the Original Kerry Craft group. I have been turning since 1996 and became a professional in 2015. I specialize in rescuing fallen Irish Hardwood, then processing it into rough form for drying and then finishing it as something beautiful with a unique story. My style of turning suits my personality. I get bored of repetition and I like to go with the flow. When I see an interesting grain pattern emerge on the lathe I try to feature it as much as possible. I don't like using guides or templates. Teaching is the next logical progression for me. It took years for me to hone my craft and that is something that can be shared and passed on. I also like to talk about the importance of responsible and sustainable hardwood tree management.

More tips

Each class that I teach brings something different to the experience. Sometimes people ask more questions about a particular aspect of the tour which changes the time spent on each stage. I welcome questions and I don't mind altering the tour if it makes it more interesting and enjoyable for you.
