What you'll do

On this musical island, your own personal Genie (yours truly) will guide you through a one-of-a-kind musical exploration. At the end of this “safari,” you will come away feeling more musically capable, empowered, and motivated to continue music on your own. We will begin with the rookie explorer's best friend: the piano. Here you will face your first challenge: figuring out a 3-note song by ear. After sharpening your new tools—your musical mind and musical ear—you'll be ready to enter the "jungle." There, you will try finding your song on a series of instruments, beginning with those that are most like the piano, and moving sequentially toward different "species" of instruments that don’t resemble the piano at all. After emerging back into the sunlight, you will have a chance to explore the island on your own and try other instruments that may be beckoning you. For the grand finale, you will circle back to the piano for an improvised duet with your Genie. Halfway through your experience we will pause for tea and homemade cookies, and you will learn more about the background of this one of a kind approach to musical empowerment.

I have been an educator and professional musician for over twenty-five years and am the founder and director of Music House, a program that aligns music learning with the natural inclinations, learning style, and readiness of each learner. My passion is helping people of all ages and backgrounds connect to their “inner musician” so that they can find a personally gratifying musical path. I was a presenter at the 2019 Carnegie Hall Music Teachers Institute and am the author of Sing It! A Biography of Pete Seeger (Seven Stories Press, 2016). A native New Yorker, I love finding the interesting happenings all around the city and writing about them, My city blogs have appeared in the New York Times “Metropolitan Diary.”
