What you'll do

Explore Downtown for a whiskey history tour! You’ll learn why Southwestern Pennsylvania is considered the birthplace of American Whiskey, what the Whiskey Rebellion in Pittsburgh was all about, and how Prohibition affected the region in the 1920s. Scout out hidden former (as well as existing!) speakeasies around the city, and discover how whiskey has fueled political, labor and social movements throughout the region. Get to experience the revival of craft spirits in Pittsburgh through a final whiskey tasting at our friends, Wigle Whiskey, in their tasting room in the Omni William Penn Hotel. Find out about Wigle’s own history as a local and family-owned business. 3 small tasters of whiskey will make a great finale of this experience.
And since they are our friends, they'll give us the option to purchase whiskey cocktails after the tour for a special price for only $5! Cheers!

This tour will be about 90 mins long, approx. 1.5 miles of walking

Please note: Due to the current closure of the William Penn Hotel, neither the speakeasy nor the Wigle Whiskey Tasting Room can be visited. The final whiskey tasting will take place in our shop (the starting point of the tour), with a variety of different Wigle Whiskeys.

I followed my husband to Pittsburgh five years ago, and saw the opportunity to reinvent myself. Inspired by Michael's entrepreneurial spirit I decided to offer historical tours through Pittsburgh. Since I earned a Master's Degree in Art and Architectural History, and I used to live in Rome (Italy), Berlin (Germany) as well as New York City (all great places for art + architecture), I though this would be e great fit. So I founded Bike the Burgh Tours first in 2015, and added Walk the Burgh Tours a year and a half later. After two years of doing every tour myself, I found some equally passionate and enthusiastic, local tour guides who love this city and also strive for excellence. We love to show off our city, we love our job, and we love meeting people from all around the world! Come join us while exploring the Burgh!

Where you'll be

We will start at the Convention Center in the Cultural District and walk our way through the Financial District, weaving in and out of small alleyways, and former sites of whiskey making, selling and drinking. The tour would usually end at an original speakeasy and the Wigle Tasting Room in the oldest hotel in town (William Penn Hotel), but due to COVID-19 and its closure we will have the final tasting of local craft whiskey at the starting point

Brutal history goes down a lot easier with some whiskey. I was lucky enough to be on Christina's first tour. She rolled with the punches and knew her stuff.

This was such a great experience, I learned a ton about the history of Pittsburgh, our tour guide was not only incredibly knowledgeable but genuinely funny in her delivery, and the whiskey itself was pretty delicious. I almost missed the tour because I mixed up the time I had signed up for, but Velentina personally called me and made sure I was able to join the group en route. She even saved me the first tasting! This was the perfect note to end my trip on. I can't wait to come back to Pittsburgh and try some of the other experiences Bike the Burgh offers!
