What you'll do

This tour takes about 1 hour to complete. This activity is not led personally by me, but carried out by various members of my team who can comprehensively explain all the inner workings and stories of the Linden Centre in detail. We ask that you please arrive at the Linden Centre front desk about 10 minutes prior to the time you reserved, and from there we will begin our tour. The Linden Centre is known as one of the major landmarks of Xizhou with a rich historical background, and now additionally hosts a hotel (in which most courtyards are not open to the general public). Without a booked tour guests will not be able to see for themselves the majestic courtyards within and learn the interesting history behind each cultural relic. The tour will start at the entrance of the Centre, and will begin with an introduction to the history of Xizhou, the origin of the Centre, as well as the background and meaning behind the rarely seen preserved Bai style entry gate. Afterwards, the tour will venture into our first courtyard where our guide will explain the life story of the previous owner, Yang Pin Xiang, as well as the artistic elements of classic Bai style architecture seen throughout the courtyard. Next we will head into the second courtyard, in which we will begin by telling you Yang Pin Xiang’s family secret and how it ties into the courtyard architecture itself! Additionally a variety of classical decorations and architectural styles can be found and discussed throughout this courtyard. Passing into the third courtyard we will enter into our unique garden and beautiful open air terrace that boasts an unparalleled view of the beautiful fields below (Take note of the weather when booking your tour, bad weather can affect our ability to fully enjoy the terrace). After we have completed the tour, we will provide you with a drink (coffee, tea, or a soft drink) and desert of choice that you can enjoy in our bar or on our terrace in order to provide a moment of sheer tranquility and peacefulness in the beautiful former house of Yang Pin Xiang.

Learn more about Linden

Linden

My name is Brian Linden and I am the founder of the Linden Centre. I have now been an active member of the Xizhou community for over 10 years! Xizhou is one of the birthplaces of Bai ethnic minority culture, and is also a well-known spot on the famous Tea-Horse Road, which is where business in Xizhou originates from. Having been so lucky to live here for many years, I now more so than ever want to share the beautiful Xizhou with more people, and through these types of experiences help others to understand Dali, understand Bai people, and truly get a deeper understanding of this peaceful village I now call home. The Linden Centre is a nationally protected heritage site, one that is currently operating as a high quality hotel, and is also a fully restored ancient property. This site not only strongly represents classic Bai ethnic minority architecture, but is also filled with enchanting true stories.

Where you'll be

The Linden Centre Yang Pin Xiang House (only open to guest who have reserved tours or rooms) We ask that you please arrive at the Linden Centre at least 10 minutes prior to the start of your tour. Also due to the fact that the tour is done in groups, on occasion we may have to briefly wait for others, we simply ask that you please respect one another in order to create an amicable environment for all involved. If you are staying in Xizhou, you can easily walk to the Linden Centre, there are signs throughout town directing to the Centre and most all map software locations for the Linden Centre are accurate. If you are staying in Dali Old Town, you can either take a local bus to the Xizhou bus stop and from there walk about 15 minutes to the Centre, or take a DiDi (Chinese Uber, costs about 60 Yuan) to the Linden Centre.
