About your host

I'm a professional folk singer and choir leader born and bred in Northumberland. I've been singing professionally for 16 years and I have been teaching for almost as long. I've a degree in folk music from Newcastle University and in the experience I will teach you some Northumbrian songs, the dialect words, and the beautiful phrasing of my native music. I'll give you some word sheets to take away…

What we’ll do

The experience will start with a cup of tea, some homemade Northumbrian baked goodies, and a chat about Northumbrian Traditional Music and culture as well as finding out what it is you would like to get out of the experience: do you want lots of songs to practise at home, do you want one song worked on really well, do you want to know how landscape and music marry up in Northumberland etc. After…

What else you should know

You don't need any singing experience at all. If you have a want to learn about Northumbrian music that's enough. I have the experience to help you learn and sing the songs, and I'm pretty fun too so it will be very enjoyable. If you are an experienced singer then we'll work hard too!

What I’ll provide

Snacks
Homemade cakes/ scones/ biscuits/ flapjack. The snacks change depending on the seasons, and what I fancy baking! If you have any dietary requirements please let me know - I can bake for most dietary needs.
Coffee, Soft drinks, Tea and Water
The tea is always Yorkshire. Decaf tea is available and is also Yorkshire. There are a selection of Twinings fruit teas. We keep the coffee fresh by using coffee bags. We don't drink coffee so it would be wasteful otherwise.
Creative supplies
I will provide word sheets for the songs, and will email recordings of what we've learnt so you can practise. I'll also give you a copy of my album, The Lass Will Not Learn, to take home with you.

What to bring

Recording Devices are welcome but not essential. Most smart phones have a voice recorder on them.

Where you'll be

The music will happen in my home (which has an Air BnB room too). This gives us privacy, peace and quiet, and space. There's always the option to add more time and head out to some of the beautiful landscapes and sing the songs back to the land they were created in.
