What you'll do
Maybe Cape Town isn’t where you’d expect to learn Indian cooking secrets, but then Riyaz – who hails from Kashmir in north India – didn’t expect to be here either! Let Riyaz, inspirational chef and maître d’ of Masala Dosa restaurant, lead you through the sensory abundance of cooking with spices. You’ll experience a three hour class at the restaurant itself, learning to make three different Indian dishes (both vegetarian/non vegetarian) from start to finish, as well as chai tea, and when you’re done you’ll eat what you’ve cooked. A fun and unusual way to make new food…and friends! "If you know how to love, you know how to cook" - Riyaz Mir

My name is Riyaz Mir, and I'm your host at Masala Dosa. I was born in Kashmir in northern India and grew up, sitting by my mother's side in our kitchen, in Srinagar. In Kashmir, men aren't supposed to cook, but my early years, watching my mother lovingly tend her steaming pots in that kitchen, taught me both the importance of sharing my culture and the subtle magic of mixing spices, herbs, and fresh ingredients. I moved to South Africa in 2004, bringing stories, recipes, and a zeal of cooking. I started working at Masala Dosa soon after my arrival, and many of our oldest customers have been with me from those early days. In 2016, the opportunity arose to buy the restaurant and there was no second thought. With my business partner, the South African novelist Damon Galgut, together we welcome you to this culinary journey.
