What you'll do

We will be meeting at a local urban park. In Portland they are forests within a city. Once gathered we will have an introduction and a brief overview of our walk. I will talk about the healing aspects of Shrinrin-Yoku and how the trees can help us heal. Suggestions on how to get the most out of your forest bathing experience will be explained. The walks will be slow and deliberate. I will lead you on well paved, easy trails through the park/forest. The goal is not to walk fast or to be on a "hike." We will be stopping several times to take in the forest to observe what is happening. We will also be sitting for several minutes (usually on the ground) at a various points in the park mostly under trees. Towels are provided to sit on and carried for you. Sometimes logs are available but not always. At these points I will guide you on thoughts of the forest to help you let go of your daily life to become immersed in your surroundings. You will have the opportunity touch trees and observe the insects and birds. This is a quiet time with limited conversation and no cell phones. The forest bathing experiences are usually 1.5 hours but it can be up to 2 hours. At the end of our time in the forest we will have tea and cookies. There may be stairs and long gradual hills but we will be walking slowly so it is not strenuous.

I have been an ISA certified arborist for over 11 years and trees are my passion. My goal is to preserve the trees we have and share with people the importance of trees not only for their beauty but for their health benefits. Through my study of trees I have come to realize how they can help reduce our stress, bring forth our creativity, and heal our aching souls and bodies. I have been studying Shinrin-Yoku, the Japanese Art and Science of Forest Bathing, and discovered how profound it is. It is my desire to share this with others, exploring forests and parks in order to immerse ourselves with the scientifically proven positive effects of trees to the human body and spirit.

Where you'll be

We will be meeting at a forest within the city. We will be gathering at an entrance on the "back side" of the park. At this point we will walk into the park/forest becoming immersed in 100 foot tall trees of Douglas fir, cedars and maples.

Outdoor activities carry risks, and you may be exposed to dangerous situations as part of this experience. Make sure you can participate safely given your abilities and the conditions (such as location, weather, and equipment).

Up to 8 guests ages 10 and up can attend.

More tips

Wear comfortable walking shoes. Hiking boots are not needed. Wear what you would be comfortable to wear outside. Please dress for the weather. If it is raining we will still go out. Most of the walk is in the woods under the cover of trees. There are no bathrooms in this direct area.
