What you'll do

In this introduction to cooking with bugs, we'll demonstrate how easy it is to fit insects into our everyday diets. We'll explore recipes like Cricket Powder Pancakes, Mealworm Mini-Pizzas, Termite-Stuffed Tomatoes, and more.

We'll begin with a brief introduction to the wonderful world of bugs. We'll discuss why we eat bugs, covering sustainability, nutrition, how to cook bugs, what a cricket farm is, and more. We'll then proceed with a guided follow-along cooking demonstration of 1 to 3 easy bug dishes.

Kid-friendly and perfect for families, Cooking with Critters is a fun way to open a dialogue about how what we eat impacts both our bodies and our environment. Food brings us together in a powerful way. Let's open some minds!

Other things to note
Guests with shellfish or dust mite allergies may also be allergic to insects. There is never any pressure to eat the bugs, but hopefully you'll want to after participating in this experience and learning more!

Also, since this is hosted in my own home, I ask for ID verification.

Hi. I'm Aly, a member of the Atlas Obscura community.

After studying public health at Yale University, I became interested in finding new ways to address the challenges of sustainably and nutritiously feeding a growing population. I started Bugible.com to support the expanding insect agriculture industry and ended up gaining a cult following on Instagram. I launched Eat Bugs Events to reach a broader audience through unique educational events like Bug & Wine Pairings, Bug Dinners, and Bug Cooking Classes. Since then, Bugible has become the leading media and PR brand for the insect agriculture industry, appearing on Netflix's Bill Nye, in Food & Wine, Forbes, & other popular publications.

We got to try several different kinds of bugs including crickets, ants, mealworms, and silkworm and pupa. We only had enough time to make two different items, but we had fun. Ally was a great host!

Even if you're sure you can't do it and might be grossed out, come and try it anyway. The information was priceless, Aly was the sweetest, most charming bug lady you could ever imagine, and the "Chocolate chirp" (cricket) cookies we made were delicious. No way you could tell there were bugs involved, unless you opted to put a big, whole one on top of the cookie or stuck legs into the marshmallows (which of course the Grands did). We ranged from ages 7-69, and everyone was happy and had a great, memorable family time. Other friends tried the cookies and loved them. GREAT Value.
