What you'll do

The Christmas Story told through Paintings in the Scottish National Gallery. Basing his lively narrative on paintings in the National Gallery of Scotland, throughout Advent art historian Dr Colin Bailey complements the Christmas Market in Edinburgh and the build-up to the festivities by examining in detail works on show depicting the events surrounding the birth of Christ. His guided tour will include Vitale da Bologna’s mid-fourteenth-century Adoration of the Kings; Filippino Lippi’s enchanting small Nativity dating from the late fifteenth century; another glorious Adoration of the Magi by Jacopo Bassano, painted in 1542; and Domenichino’s early Baroque masterpiece The Adoration of the Shepherds. Colin will talk about the artists’ place in the history of art; their various techniques; as well as their use of symbols and attributes.. Take a break from the bustle of Princes Street and the crowded Christlmarkt and relax for an hour enjoying the tranquillity of the National Gallery and the pleasure and stimulus derived from looking at works of art.
