What you'll do

No experience necessary! Beginners and seasoned beekeepers welcomed. You will learn all about basic beekeeping. This will include: The parts of the hive, the 3 types of bees, various the races of honeybees. You will learn the bee life-cycle, and what to look for in a hive. How to manage the hive, learn about hive health, and what equipment to use, and how to use it. This is a fully hands on class, and you will be encouraged to go into the hive and observe first hand all the action. If at anytime you feel uncomfortable you can stop, and take a break. The hive has about 20,000 to 40,000 bees inside, and it is a fascinating experience. Never fear since you will be provided a beekeeping suit, gloves and tools. I will guide you and we will go into active hives and look for the queen, drones and worker bees. In addition we will inspect the hives for any signs of disease, pests or interesting occurrences. This will teach you to perform various functions of maintenance. In addition, we will have a sampling of honey, and pollen tasting for you that we have taken from the hives at the ranch.

Your hosts

I have been a Silicon Valley Finance Professional for the last 25 years and understand that we 'techies' are very much into nature after a hard days work and want to do more to promote a better way of work/life balance. That's why I started a new passion and became a beekeeper the past 5 years. I have now more than 80 beehives on the ranch. what is more, I have been teaching beginning beekeeping for the last three years. I teach beginning beekeeping, and I mentor people that want to start their own hives. I am currently a director on the board of a 400+ membership beekeeping association in the East Bay of San Francisco. I own the ranch - The Loose Rooster Ranch which is only an hours drive from Silicon Valley. Many people come and "sponsor" hive to continue their learning, especially if they cannot keep bees on their own property.
