What you'll do
You and no more than five others will explore the local foods and entertainment districts of Kyoto on a not-so-standard, all-inclusive walking and eating nighttime tour! You'll mingle with locals, eat regional specialties at two different standing bar/restaurants, and be given a visual and festive primer on the various nightlife scenes in Kyoto, from geiko (a.k.a. "geisha") on down. Since we're native English speakers with Japanese fluency, you'll get a clear and highly relatable understanding of what the area is all about. And with some great food and a couple of (included) drinks in you, the merriment will be all the more!
We start with an hour of exploring the culturally inspiring and architecturally impressive Yasaka Jinja (shrine). Here, under atmospheric evening lighting, you'll get a light lesson on Shinto beliefs and the role of religion in society here. After some quiet strolling, we head into the famous Gion entertainment quarter, where we'll hopefully spot the elusive Geisha, but regardless have lots to talk about and see.
Besides great sights, we've a grand cavalcade of tasty Japanese foods in store for you, across two different restaurants (one of which will be a classic, tapas style "standing bar" type place), with a variety of drink options to boot. Some foods will be familiar, some not, but we're going to make your night delicious, not intimiding.
Other things to note
Please let us know if you have any allergies or dietary restrictions. We can accommodate vegetarians too.

I'm Kevin, an American on a mission to show visitors the best of local Japan, and I've lived in here for 10 years, most of them in Kansai. Here I've learned fluent Japanese, which opened up for me a world of enchanting local sights and tiny restaurants with great food! Mardi is my good friend and Kyoto counterpart, also with the Japanese ability and mastery of the food, drink, and cultural landscape to give you the greatest of evenings! One or both us may have the pleasure of helping delve into Kyoto's rich culture and food.
Where you'll be
We'll begin our adventure in Gion, a district in eastern Kyoto, and end our tour in Kawaramachi, which is just across the river from where we start. The restaurants we go to may vary by night, but they have all been very thoroughly vetted and offer some of the best Kyoto flavors around.

Mardi was a lovely person and a great guide. She has so much knowledge to share about the area and Japanese culture, it was really enjoyable even with the rain! We let her know we are vegetarians and she chose two places that had great Japanese veggie dishes. A great first day in Kyoto! I highly recommend this tour!

We just finished the tour with Mardi, she was so knowledgeable, nice and welcoming. It was a good mix of historical, cultural and food in one tour. We love asian food, and thought we know and tried a lot, but Mardi introduced us with some unique tapas style local dishes and drinks, and it was awesome.
