What you'll do
We'll meet at Stonington's town ramp two hours before sunset, and after a short safety briefing, paddle out of Stonington Harbor. Stonington's busy lobster fishing harbor is much quieter this time of the day, after most of the lobster boats have returned, and it's an ideal time for a close-up look at the fleet as we head out to the islands. Most likely we'll paddle around Crotch Island, still an active granite quarry, and Sand Island, a preserve where we may briefly land on the beach. If the weather cooperates, we'll watch the sun set as we paddle along the western sides of these islands, and paddle back through the harbor at twilight.
COVID -19: Starting June 26, visitors who have not quarantined or who are not from NH or VT must complete a Certificate of Compliance form, indicating negative COVID-19 test results. Google State of Maine COVID guidelines for more.
Other things to note
This trip is for anyone, regardless of previous paddling experience; I'll give instruction as needed. Most of our boats best for medium-sized paddlers, but the tandem and canoe can accommodate most sizes. Fin & Fern restaurant is open until 8:30.

- Identity verified
I've been guiding and teaching on the Maine coast since 2010, mostly around Stonington . I wrote the guidebook 'AMC's Best Sea Kayaking in New England,' as well as a number of articles in sea kayaking and outdoor magazines, and will soon have a new book out about a two-month sea kayak journey my wife and I took along the Maine coast. I've usually worked for other outfitters, but now mostly guide and teach on my own.
Where you'll be
We'll paddle among the moored lobster fishing fleet in Stonington Harbor, then follow the shore of Crotch Island, which is littered with a century-and-a-half of massive granite blocks that didn't 'make the cut.' Sand Island has an idyllic high-tide sandy beach and Crotch's west side is exposed to to the expanse of East Penobscot Bay, where seals congregate on nearby ledges, and the sun sets over the distant Camden Hills.
