What you'll do

This is your opportunity to see Lorton like a local. Even local residents are unaware of the rich history we have here in Lorton, outside of being known for its famous prison. Our tour will begin with a visit to the Workhouse Arts Center and learn about the suffragists who were imprisoned there during the fight for the 19th Amendment. Depending on availability, we will also visit one of Good Shepherd Housing's affordable apartments and hear how our mission has evolved with our changing community. Our next stop will be a special tour of Gunston Hall, home to George Mason, considered to be the Father of the Bill of Rights. We will conclude our day with a tour and beer tasting at one of Fairfax County's award winning breweries, Fair Winds Brewing.

Candice

I'm the Director of Development at Good Shepherd Housing. I'm also a small business owner, who has lived in the Mount Vernon/Lorton area for almost twenty years. I ran for county supervisor a few years ago, and had the good fortune to learn even more about the history of our community as part of that experience, and I love sharing that history with others. Lorton is the home of the Gunston Hall, the historical Pohick Church, Fort Belvoir, and the Workhouse, to just name a few.

About the organization

Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services, Inc.

In the DC metropolitan area, increases in the cost of housing routinely outpace increases in wages, leaving many to struggle with long-term housing stability. With community support, Good Shepherd Housing offers affordable housing coupled with customized case management to help families achieve long-term success. We also provide financial support for children's activities and summer camps.

This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services, Inc..
