What you'll do

Are you interested in learning about the legacy of our Africans ancestor in the Cuban Culture? Are you ready to witness its influence in the daily life of the Cuban people? Then this experience is a MUST for you!
We will meet at Beyond Roots headquarter in Old Havana to share a cup of coffee and get to know each other. From there we will travel to the town of Guanabacoa, the cradle of Afro-Cuban culture in Havana. Once there we´ll have a firsthand contact with the Cuban life and our practices by meeting a “Babalawo”--the highest priest of Santeria. He will cleanse us at his altar and explain us the main Afro-Cuban religions and also how he looks into people’s future and gives advice based on what he sees. We will enjoy typical Afro-Cuban food and relax under the shadow of a sacred Ceiba tree listening to emblematic music played by members of the community, while we taste a cup of Aguardiente, the beverage used in all Afro-Cuban religious practices. After that we´ll go back to Beyond Roots store, the first and only Afro style shop in Cuba, having the opportunity to visit an space dedicated to highlighting the Afro identity in the island. You will come as a guest but you will leave being part of the community.

Note:
You can stay for a reading with the babalawo and have the perfect opportunity to take a closer look in to your future. It has an additional cost.

En esta experiencia en particular, tendrás una inmersión en cada aspecto de ella. También nos encantará contarte como nuestro emprendimiento promueve la estética y la identidad Afro en Cuba.

This was such an amazing experience. I learned so much about Afro-Cuban culture and religion that I do not think I would have had the opportunity to do so without this excursion. I loved my tour guides, they were so kind and helpful. I will never forget this experience.

If you want to really know the AfroCuban history, Adriana & Jose is your team to learn from. This experience is an immersion into the AfroCuban culture and it felt like it was led by a professor. We really enjoyed the experience and the personal touches. It is a long day, so wear comfortable shoes and be prepared to learn.

I highly recommend taking this tour. It was fascinating walking through the city and having the important history of particular buildings pointed out. The tour guide was very friendly and personable.

This tour offers a fascinating insight into the Afro-Cuban cultural heritage, especially its religious underpinning. It was so interesting to grasp how a culture and an identity can be nested—and hidden—within another like this despite the unrelenting cruelty of the masters. We learned about the sources in Yoruba culture and the ways it gave enslaved peoples the strength to survive intact and never forget who they were. It’s a cliché but also a reassuring truth that you can steal the bodies of people but not their spirit. Thanks for sharing this with us.
