What you'll do

Since we will be on the hunt for organisms that operate on their own schedules and aren't fully understood by humans, there will inherently be a bit of meandering involved in this activity. The experience will most certainly be in the journey, rather than the destination, and it will be unique each time based upon each season, location, and recent weather patterns.

We will begin in town by covering some basic safety information for walking in the woods and ensuring that all members of the party are equipped to handle a day of mushroaming! We will then head out. I will share as many tips and tricks with you as I can for finding these sometimes elusive organisms as we wander around in the woods for a couple hours, carefully searching for any edible fungi that we can collect and bring home. I will also teach you how to look for key characteristics of these mushrooms, so you know exactly what fungus you have found and you can confirm that it is safe and delicious to eat. Upon returning to town, I will share some of my favorite methods of preparing whatever mushrooms we have found for the day and answer any questions to set you up for future success should you choose to continue mushroaming on your own in the future!
Other things to note
We will not be climbing mountains, but you must be in good enough physical shape to walk around in the forest for a few hours. This can include climbing over downed trees, walking through shallow creeks, and getting through with thick brush and branches!

I'm a biochemist with an intense passion for nature, food, human health, and the ultimate interaction of all these interests! As someone who studies the genetic regulation of fungi as a career, I am deeply fascinated by these organisms and how little is truly known about them. As someone who spends as much time as possible in the forests, I am awe stricken by the amount of delicious food that is available to be consumed by any wanderer with the right knowledge. As someone who is trying to live a long, healthy, and happy life, I am convinced by the evidence that supports the regular consumption of mushrooms for our physical and mental wellbeing. I have been foraging my own food from the forests of Oregon since I moved here over 5 years ago, and I would love to take you along with me on the holistic journey that I refer to as mush-roaming!

Where you'll be

We'll meet briefly in the park for our pre-excursion preparation and then we will head out into the forest! The exact location will be dependent on recent weather patterns. Finally, we will visit in the park again after mushroaming to discuss cooking and eating the mushrooms, to answer any questions, and to say goodbye!

If you think a wet, rainy, cold day could dampen one's sprits on a foraging excursion outside of Eugene.. wrong try again, I had a blast -- plus uh its Oregon.. it rains here. I definitely came away from the experience learning more about how to live off the land by learning how to identify some of the local mushrooms and fungi that grow in the area and what to stay away from. Speaking of fungi.. Drake (pun intended) was great and super knowledgable while Stance his pup was awesome at guiding me towards Drake when I'd lose sight or wander a tad bit too far. As a newly minted local I can't wait to return with my bucket, knife and brush in tow.

This experience could change your life! I'd always wanted to forage for mushrooms but it's one of those skills that's probably best learned from a fellow forager rather than relying solely on books or the internet. My partner, bless him, joined me on this experience despite his fear of wild mushrooms. Drake, who generously adjusted his schedule to accommodate ours, greeted us wearing a beanie covered in tiny multicolored mushrooms that his mother gifted him. That sums up exactly who he is: a really cool, positive, good person with a lot of knowledge about mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest. He took us to a picking spot just off a hiking trail, showed us what to look for in order to identify several seasonal species, and had us confidently picking edibles within the hour. We picked yellow foot mushrooms, hedgehogs, chanterelles, and cat's tongue and Drake kindly gave us a couple of candy caps he found. I ate electric orange witches butter right off the log (delicious). My partner found a lot of different inedible mushrooms and Drake identified and told us about them. We spent the afternoon foraging and talking about the mushroom industry, medicinal applications, life on a mushroom farm, and the science of fungi and went home with some great photos and a giant bag of delicious edibles we'd picked ourselves. Let me tell you, the wild mushrooms we picked are so delicious they make store-bought white buttons taste like a crime against humanity. They are one of the best foods I've ever eaten. I'm so glad to have gained a new skill I'll use for the rest of my life. Drake leveled up our hiking game and our eating game and we're already planning to head back into the woods this weekend to forage for more. I'd do this experience again in a heartbeat!

If you are visiting Eugene OR, I highly recommend this mushroom foraging experience. It was very nice to hike in the beautiful and peaceful forest and learn about fascinating mushrooms. Drake and Emily were very friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about mushrooms. We learned about edible vs non-edible mushrooms and how to cook them.

Such a fun and interesting experience! I learned a lot about types of edible fungi all while we were picking them from the ground. Drake is super knowledgeable about fungi, so this experience was a great time and a learning experience!
