What you'll do

I’ll guide you in a lively exposition of the cultural, religious and historical aspects of the roman civilization through the symbolism and the meanings of the ancient masterpieces. I can introduce you to some of the richest collections as the ones of Massimo and Altemps Palaces, Capitoline, Barracco, Etruscan, Montemartini, Trajan’s Market and Palatine museums. The most fascinating locations: Baths of Caracalla and Diocletian, Stadium of Domitian (Piazza Navona to date). The Pantheon, Colosseum, both Roman and Imperial Forum, Palatine and Pincian Hills, Altar of the Augustan Peace and Mausoleum of Hadrian (Castel Sant’Angelo to date). The route of the tour is customizable starting from a chosen location, then I’ll propose a high-quality foot and food tour through the main points selected. Special additions will be reserved for restaurants and an exclusive passage into an inner area of the St. Peter's Basilica! Other things to note: for any other question, help, or specific organization logistics for the tour, i'll be available on social platforms as FB or Whatsapp.

Ancient history, art and classic civilization enthusiast. I work as journalist since September 2016, counting more than eighty publications. In February 2019 I’m registered by the professional Order of journalists of Italy. I'm a doctor at the University of Rome “La Sapienza” in archaeological sciences, I’ve participated to five campaigns: one at the Roman Forum, three on the Palatine Hill and two at the Portus harbour with the École française de Rome. I’ve performed in a theatrical company and I’ve studied as a voice actor, now I’m editor of the periodical “L’Intellettuale Dissidente” and director of the divulgation society “Italica Res”. In the last twelve years I brought friends and worldwide acquaintances trough tours on traditions, history, and art of the Eternal City. (https://www.facebook.com/Ascanio.Modena. Altieri)

Where you'll be

I suggest not crowded, but extraordinary places. I'm particularly attached to the Altar of the Augustan Peace and the Pantheon. Extra special locations for tours: Jewish Ghetto, Piazza di Spagna, Piazza Colonna, Velabrum valley, Tiber Island and Trastevere. Jump into the religious symbols of roman art, a mystic walk with mass inside an inaccessible area of St. Peter's Basilica and a bowl of handmade pasta, will be some good long-lasting memories!

The best tour of Rome that I can imagine! Ascanio contacted us before the tour started and we personalized the 4(!) hour tour through the city of Rome. We met in front of the Ara Pacis Augustae and he gave us an impressive tour of the spectacular monument. He knows about every small detail of every frieze and could probably describe the family tree of Augustus flawlessly by heart. We could really ask him anything about the symbolism and history, which he strongly encouraged! The tour continued through the city center and included countless antique buildings, statues, and monuments. Ascanio seems to know every street and alley and if you point him at anything that even remotely resembles a pillar he can definitely tell you what temple it belonged to, who built it, when it was built, and who stole parts of it to built something else. The tour also included archeological sights that he personally helped to excavate and at the very end we were so lost in our conversation that out tour breached the 5 hour mark. This is by far the most information dense sightseeing tour there is, but still it feels like a good friend is finally able to show you all his favorite places in his home town! Great enthusiasm, rich information, and a guide that feels like you know him since your school days!

The hours shared with Ascanio in the heart of the forner Roman world were outstanding. The tour was wonderfully full of learning and very interactive - I asked questions and Ascanio knows so much he gave a full, rich answer to each of them! It was also extremely special to walk the Forum and the Palantine Hill with someone who has been excavating and studing this very area. Where I was seeing ruins, he sees magnificent buildings with their purpose, history, and meaning. Ascanio generously shared his knowledge of the people, traditions, values, and ways of the ancient Romans. This is a very close, intimate knowledge of public figures and emperors - they are live to him and he admires or laments things that they did like they matter personally to him. He is passionate about the Roman cultural heritage; his passion and energy are contagious. This tour was the absolute highlight of my experience of Rome. Have you at some time dreamt of taking a peek into the life of the Ancient Rome? Do book a tour with Ascanio! Especially if you value true professionalism and erudite knowledge, coupled with dedication to his subject and a very interactive manner.

Words cannot describe the experience I had today. Everything from meeting him to the flexibility on scheduling was amazing. He is extremely, knowledgeable and passionate about the history and the topic. He shared some personal insight and answered all of my questions and made me feel extremely comfortable. He even recommended nice restaurants, gelato places and other interesting areas to see. I don’t think I was with a “guide” but a good friend. After spending the day with him I felt like I made a new friend in Rome and would like to recommend him to anyone who wants to learn from an expert who will genuinely care about you. Cheers
