What you'll do
Join me and explore the unique birds that call California home! Whether you are new to birding or it is one of your biggest passions, I can help you find these interesting and beautiful creatures, but also teach you about the life histories, needs, and conservation efforts along the way. Our morning excursion begins in riparian and primarily wooded habitat for passerines and migrant bird species, with a mid-morning snack break, then on to managed wetlands and open fields, where we'll look for hawks, grassland birds, and waterfowl. This will give us a broad picture of the bird species found on this beautiful preserve.
Other things to note
This will not be a strenuous morning, but please come prepared to walk several miles on flat walkways. I will have bird identification books. Don't forget your binoculars!

I've been a bird guide and biologist for over 30 years in many places: TX, NM, AZ, California, etc. I've helped citizen science programs, like Breeding Bird Surveys and Christmas Bird Counts, done wildlife population studies and nest monitoring. I served for 10 yrs on the board of a W. TX Audubon Society, including 2 yrs as President. I’ve traveled around the world for birdwatching (Tanzania, Uganda, Borneo, Belize, Costa Rica, China, Australia, Bonaire, to name a few, including most of the U.S. and offshore pelagics). I'm very passionate about conservation and ecology, which includes my profession, and love sharing my specialized knowledge with both children and adults. Other birdwatching experiences I host are: Putah Creek/Yolo Bypass (http://bit.ly/2Zg3chu) and Gray Lodge Wildlife Management Area (http://bit.ly/2Na9wAZ).

Where you'll be
We'll meet at the Visitor's Center and get an overview of the area, while checking out what species are visiting the hummingbird feeders. From there, we'll take the boardwalk through the riparian area, stopping to listen to bird songs, look for elusive species, and learn about the migrants coming through. We'll take a short snack break, then move on to wetlands with marsh species and plenty of waterfowl that are part of the Pacific Flyway.

This experience was the perfect orientation to birding. Ellen was very responsive to messages and was flexible in allowing us to change the date of our experience. She was very knowledgeable and knew many facts about the bird species we saw. She also pointed out identifying features and taught us tips for birding such as it being useful to know the names of the parts of a bird. The pace was perfect, and we covered a lot of area while still having enough time to pause and observe the birds that we saw. You could really tell how passionate she is. After the experience, she sent us a list of the bird species we saw and additional follow up info about things we had discussed while birding. This was such a memorable experience, and we can't wait to join Ellen for another birding adventure.

Such a nice way to spend a Saturday morning. I'm a beginner, and Ellen was very mindful of that in her insights. After the experience she put together a summary of all the birds we saw, which I found super helpful.
She has a ton of experience, and has seen birds all around the world, so I'm sure more advanced birders than I would have a great time with her, too.
