What you'll do
This experience is specialized for tameshigiri(test cutting).
In this lesson you will try the most basic and fundamental cut the migi kesagiri (right side downward diagonal cut).
When you first arrive to the dojo you will change into a traditional training uniform called a keikogi. Guests will learn the basic history of Japanese swords and how they are manufactured.
After that, you will practice how to swing a katana (sword) using a blunt practice sword.
With any cut, the most critical aspect is the hasuji (angle of the blade).
If you can cut skillfully, there will be no feeling of resistance from the material being cut. However, if the angle of the blade is slightly off, you will not be able to successfully cut through the material or you may cut through the material but will experience a shock to your hands.
Now it is time to try test cutting.
First, we will test your blade angle on a hanmaki (half of a tatami roll).
Next, you will try cutting the thicker ichimaimaki (one tatami roll).
Finally, you will challenge yourself with a futomaki (two tatami roll)or yokonarabi(two tatami side by side).
You can choose futomaki or yokonarabi at the dojo.
Cutting futomaki or yokonarabi can be extremely difficult for people with no experience but with good instruction it is possible.
If the angle of your blade is correct, you will be able to cut even a futomaki or yokonarabi.
Other things to note
You are to handle sharp cutlery during lesson,
please do not drink alcohol before coming to dojo.

I hold the rank of 6th degree instructor in Zen Nihon Toyama Iaido Renmei (ZNTIR).I am an instructor at ZNTIR's headquarters as well as a practitioner of traditional Japanese horseback archery which is called yabusame.
I have 22 years of experience in both swordsmanship and yabusame.
I work towards promoting and transmitting authentic Japanese culture to the world and future generations.
The experiences I provide are not a form of entertainment or performance.
There are many instances were groups or teachers take advantage of foreign visitors’ lack of knowledge about Japanese culture and provide them with a pseudo experience. I sincerely believe this is wrong and only teach authentic Japanese Swordsmanship and spirit. For those who wish to have a proper experience, or want to study authentic kenjutsu, please come join one of my lesson.

Where you'll be
The Toyama school of swordsmanship was originally taught by the old Japanese army and was the last kenjutsu to be used in actual combat.
It was developed by combining the specialties of various sword schools.
Under normal circumstances, this type of thing would never have happened.
You can experience it at the honbu dojo (headquarters).
Please come even if you have already had a samurai or ninja experience.

Yoshioki is an absolutely phenomenal teacher who clearly has a passion for what he does. The learning experience was second to none and with his level of expertise you could easily say it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn real Samurai sword skills from a professional. While it may seem out if the way, it was only a single train ride from Tokyo followed by a short walk. The experience exceeded every expectation I had and I highly recommend you give it a try if youve ever considered an experience such as this.

Although this place is bit outside of the city centre I would definitely say it is worth the travel. This was the best experience me and my partner had. Yoshioki was very friendly and welcoming. He has authentic and real knowledge of samurai swords and techniques. He is very calm and teaches at your pace, always making sure that you are safe. Our favourite part was the cutting of the bamboo mats ofcourse. He really paid attention to how we could perfect our technique. In the end my partner and I could cut through the bamboo like samurais. Great teacher and great value for money. Would definitely recommend you to try out a session with him. Thank you Yoshioki!

Sensei Yoshioki was phenomenal; both as an expert instructor and as a human being. My wife and I consider ourselves truly lucky to have had the opportunity to get to know him and learn from him. This experience should be a top priority for anyone with an interest in Japanese culture, history, Samurai, and/or martial arts.
