What you'll do

We will meet at Ecusta Brewing in Brevard then head to the trailhead, a ~25 minute scenic drive including a bit of dirt road. 2-wheel drive vehicles will have no problem, the road is well-maintained. Carpooling is always an option, but depends on the group size.

Starting at the trailhead, we will run a ~7 mile loop with several beautiful waterfalls and one of the best overlooks in the forest - Slate Rock. Towering over the Pink Beds Valley, the slickrock vista includes views of nearby Pilot Rock, Funnel Top Mountain and the distant high peaks of the Great Balsam Range. I would argue that the views are far better than John Rock, Cedar Rock, or even Looking Glass Rock. Its limited popularity is due mostly to its remoteness and difficulty to navigate. Many times, we have had the entire trail to ourselves. As we run, I'll highlight the unique flora and fauna along the trail and offer a brief history of Pisgah National Forest its ties to the Biltmore Estate.

Afterward, we'll return to Brevard and enjoy a cold beverage and/or food at Ecusta Brewing at the entrance to the National Forest. I also include complimentary packaged beer from my friends at UpCountry Brewing (Must be at least 21).

Alternatively, those staying in Asheville have requested to meet at the Ingles in Mills River to shorten the drive. If this is the case, we will instead visit Blue Ghost Brewing near Mills River.

With 5 years of extensive van-based travels, I've logged well over 10,000 miles on the trail across the better half of the US and parts of Canada and Mexico. After a few years, I knew I wanted to settle in Western North Carolina. I've explored every corner of Pisgah National Forest and I know where all the best waterfalls and overlooks are, as well as the best trail running loops.

I began my career as a trail and ultrarunner in 2015, with limited experience running until 2012. Since then, I've competed in several races including multiple 50-milers and one 100-miler in 2018. I spend countless hours on the trail in Pisgah and can frequently be found attempting solo 20+ mile runs in the forest - but I still know what it takes to start from scratch.

As of 2020, I am the only permitted Trail Running Tour Guide in Pisgah National Forest.

Brendon offers a great trail running experience to all levels of runners. He has a vast amount of knowledge about trail running and about the entire area that he takes runners on. It was kinda like a history tour slash trail run—high quality. In addition to getting an amazing run in, Brendon takes runners to his favorite local spots afterwards. He took me to Ghost Brewing where I got to try a pumpkin ale. I have no regrets with signing up for this experience and I highly recommend it to others out there on this app!

Ventured solo to Asheville for my 40th birthday and my treat was a trail run/trek with Brendon. Brendon was professional, knowledgeable, and great company! Knowing we’d be exploring trails less traveled, he was prepped and I felt completely safe with his support. Brendon was also flexible, adjusting to my fitness level and engaging positively along the way. Overall, I think Brendon was fantastic and the concept of having a fellow trail runner to guide trails deep in the heart of the Pisgah is priceless. Thanks, White Dot!
