What you'll do

From Hippies to Hipsters! This walk explores the historic Haight-Ashbury, the epicenter of the famed Hippie Movement and its 1967 Summer of Love. We start our walk at an iconic residence bordering Golden Gate Park, then we head through the park to Hippie Hill and then onto Haight Street, where we’ll pass by funky stores, cool murals, and lots of tie-dye! We’ll veer off of Haight Street a few of times so that we can admire, learn about and photograph some of the super colorful, quintessential Victorian architectural gems that make the Haight so famous. We will pay homage to the homes of the Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Jimi Hendrix. We will talk about the Summer of Love and why thousands of young people flocked to San Francisco in the 60’s. After completing this walk, guests will have a familiarity with the Haight-Ashbury, its history and its architecture. Check this ‘must-see’ off your SF to-do list or confidently return and continue to explore on your own.
Other things to note
The walk is mostly flat, but do wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers.

I am a San Francisco native obsessed with walking! I have been exploring San Francisco by foot for as long as I can remember and I have applied my pedestrian vision to explorations of Paris, London, Rome. I have created and led Architectural walking tours in the South of France and I have taken many walking tours in cities all over Europe. I have a degree in Architecture from UC Berkeley, and have studied Historic Preservation in London. I believe walking is not just the best way to explore a city, it is the only way to be comfortably introduced to a city. Instead of being glued to google maps, I am here to show you the pleasures of San Francisco on foot. I want to take visitors to places not on the usual “tourist” list. My aim is to show you the city through the eyes of a native.

Where you'll be

We visit Haight Street (especially the hippie bit with its funky shops), a part of Golden Gate Park, and parts of the Haight Ashbury Neighborhood (for the colorful Victorians & former homes of musicians). The tour ends in in front Haight-Ashbury’s very own Painted Ladies on Central Avenue.

We had a great time with Ginevra, who's charming and very knowledgeable. With my dad visiting and with some friends, it was 5 of us on the group tour. Even with some of the group having lived in SF for nearly 10 years, we all had moments of, "i had no idea! wow!" Hope to go on more tours with Ginevra in the future!

This tour is perfect for learning about hippie history and the summer of love as well as the architectural side of San Francisco! Ginevra had a wonderful enthusiasm and intriguing stories about all the history of hippie San Francisco. If you want to learn more about the music and culture and where it all started, don't miss this!!
