What you'll do

Discover a grassroots community project in the old city

Let's explore the Saint Angel's neighborhood of Old Havana to learn about the internationally recognized Artecorte Community Project. Created in 1999 by Gilberto "Papito" Valladares, Artecorte is a unique local development project in Cuba. We'll visit the Artecorte Living Museum, a hair salon full of artwork and vintage barber's chairs; our Community School, where we provide different programs for underprivileged kids and young adults; the Seniors Center, where we support the seniors in our community; and the Barber's Park, which we built for the youngest kids in our community.

This was a wonderful opportunity to see a part of Cuba that you cannot see or learn about without actually knowing someone in the area of public service and nonprofits. Having this experience has left us wanting to do more for the people, not just tourism.

Our experience at ArteCorte was really interesting and totally worthwhile. As someone who works at a nonprofit in the US, it was so valuable to see how this grassroots organization works in Cuba, a place with a very different economy and social safety net. Camilo was a really engaging, personal host, and readily answered a ton of questions from us. I feel like I learned a lot about ArteCorte and it's history, but also a lot about Cuba and Havana more generally. Camilo also had an understanding of the nonprofit field in the US, so he was able to draw comparisons for us and help us to better understand what we were experiencing in Cuba. It was also really nice to have something like this structured for just one hour - it gave us something really interesting to do that day while still leaving plenty of time for exploring.

This was our second visit with Camilo and the ArteCorte project. Each time we were able to meet Papito which was a real treat. And each time the group member left feeling inspired by the project and eager to learn more ways to have a similar impact back at home. Camilo’s passion and enthusiasm are impressive. We highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Havana!

This was my favorite thing I did in Havana. This is an incredible organization that deserves support, and I would recommend to anyone visiting Cuba.

This experience is definitely worthwhile! Camilo is friendly, enthusiastic, and very knowledgeable. The work he is doing with Papito to help disconnected young people and those with disabilities is inspiring, and you will get to see one of the most beautiful hair salons you have ever encountered. Don’t miss it!
