What you'll do

After a brief introduction, the participants choose a Monet landscape to recreate with some guidance from the teacher - everyone will paint the same picture in the class. No one will ever paint the same picture twice - unless by request. We discuss the selected painting’s key features and I give some background information about the painting & Monet’s life at the time it was painted. We start by breaking down the composition into simple elements (the skeleton). It is a clear step-by-step process - I demonstrate first then the participants follow. Next, we move onto paint (the flesh). Again, I demonstrate the application process and explain the order in which the paint is applied. Even at this stage the learner will begin to see a resemblance to the Monet original. After the first hour, we take a break to stretch and refresh, in the meantime the teacher quickly dries the paintings using hairdryers. Once the pictures are dry we move on to the final stage, which is to apply the ‘painted’ surface (the skin). We use oil pastel to replicate Monet’s brush work. Each technique of application is demonstrated first, the participant needs only to follow the process. After 2 hours each participant will have created an accurate impression of the great Impressionist’s work, something they will be proud to show off to family & friends alike.

I am the owner and founder of Monet Magic. I can train anyone, regardless of age, ability, or experience, to recreate a Monet landscape to a level that will cause the participant to amaze themselves. I have lived and worked as a practicing artist in Prague (Czech Republic), Espoo (Finland), Jakarta (Indonesia) and the UK. I taught iGCSE Art and Design at an international school in Jakarta, I have also taught art in a variety of private art class settings. Monet Magic developed from a mixed-medium technique that was designed to give students confidence. The technique allows anyone to create an accurate rendition of a Monet painting with incredible depth and sumptuous colour in a very short space of time. Just keep an open mind and follow some very simple instructions. The rest of the process happens as if...by magic.

A really relaxing and enjoyable afternoon. Philip gave very clear instructions that helped make it easy to follow along (even if a complete beginner), and taught a really interesting mixed media technique that I'll definitely plan on trying out again. All in all a great way to spend a couple of hours

I am really glad we booked Phillip's two hour Monet workshop. My son and daughter really enjoyed it and in particular the background to the painting and the explanation of the techniques used. On a scale of 1 (awful) to 10 (awesome), I would rate my artistic capability nearer the 1 end of the scale, but I came away from the workshop with a painting that broadly looks like Monet's original. I didn't believe that was possible before the workshop. Thank you Phillip.

As a family with boys aged 17 and 12, it worked out to be an activity we could all do together and enjoy. We picked up great tips and loved learning about how to view and represent a Monet piece.

This was a great experience for a group of friends, following our weekend trip to York. We ranged from complete novice to amateur artist and the experience was suitable for all. It was a very relaxing and interesting session and Philip was great at telling us about Monet’s ‘rags to riches’ story alongside some of his own experiences of travel.
