What you'll do
Our walking tour will take in Dublin's medieval quarter right through to it's revolutionary history in the 20th century, at a pace that can be enjoyed and understood by almost everyone. The tour will begin at Dublin Castle including the original Viking origins of the town, from here we will go to St. Patrick's Cathedral and hear about the truth and fiction behind Ireland's patron saint, Christ Church Cathedral and its links to the Norman conquest of Ireland, along the way we will see relics of the medieval town. We will stop for a break and visit a private central rooftop with a great view of the city. We then move on to the cultural quarter of Dublin. I'll show you some hidden gems, some local street art and tourist traps to avoid. We'll pass by Trinity College and on to the Famine memorial, before visiting the site of the Irish uprising against British rule in 1916 (GPO/O'Connell street) and the Ha'penny Bridge. Our tour will wrap up in a local bar where we can continue the conversation over a delicious authentic Irish meal and beer/wine of your choice included in tour price!.(NB Limited menu due to covid) A tour with me offers you the chance to see the city through the eyes of a permanent resident and working historical researcher; combining non-scripted historical expertise, and several years of tour guiding experience. All ages welcome
Other things to note
My tours are generally suitable for all ages and abilities. Walking is about 2 hours at a time (incl stops) between breaks and covers 2-3 mile. There are a number of steps involved for the rooftop view. We talk about social issues in Ireland, so over 18s advised for content, but mature kids welcome.

My Name is Alan. I'm a working historical researcher and tour guide living right in the heart of Dublin's Temple Bar District. My family's roots in Dublin stretch back several generations. I qualified with a Masters in Modern Irish History in 2017 (First Class Honours) and have been guiding for three years as a freelancer for several companies. I also work as an archive researcher for one of Ireland's best known TV Presenters/Journalists on an upcoming book. I love combining my passion for history and research with telling stories of Ireland's past. I'm now offering my services and expertise to small groups in order to really get to know Dublin's history, culture and stories on a more intimate, conversational level.

Alan is extremely knowledgeable about the deep rich history of Dublin! I had an amazing time, learned so much, and enjoyed a day of fresh air and a stroll around Dublin! He was able to answer all my questions and I can not tell you how wonderful the meal was and how fabulous it was to sit and have a chat about the day over a meal and a pint! Thank you so much Alan for making the history of your town come alive! You can just tell how much he enjoys what he is doing and how passionate he is about Dublin’s amazing history and culture!

A great tour of Dublin. There are so many layers of history that make Ireland special. Alan’s extensive knowledge made the city come alive. Would recommend scheduling the tour early in your visit so that you will have time to go visit some of the amazing sights on your own later. Highly recommend this tour.

Where to start? Our half day tour with Alan was hands-down the highlight of our trip. He was personable, knowledgeable, and showed us a side of Dublin that we never would have seen otherwise. I greatly enjoyed the personal touches Alan did, like going greater in depth about the history of Dublin and what the city meant to him. The cherry on top was our dinner and chat at the end, where he gave us tips based on what our interests were - for example, pubs with live traditional folk music and a local hiking path with spectacular views of Howth Bay.
I highly recommend taking a tour with Alan - he's awesome!

This is a tour for true history fans. Alan’s knowledge is incredible and his ability to tie together historical events in one afternoon was impressive. After leaving the tour, I truly felt I had a significantly better understanding of Irish history and it’s people. 5 hours of history flew by as we saw incredible places and learned more about them than most other tours would offer. Alan’s depth of knowledge is wonderful and I would recommend this to anyone who really loves diving into history and getting nerdy about specific events! The small group size made it easy to ask him questions and made it feel like we were getting a tour from a local friend!
