What you'll do

This tour is an observation experience of the architectural evolution of Rio de Janeiro for over 100 years.
Much of Brazil's history goes through Rio de Janeiro, which was the capital for almost 200 years. Observing Rio's architecture is an excellent way to understand the country.

Our first stop is the viewpoint on the rooftop of the "Museu de Arte do Rio" where we will talk about the history of Brazil, so we can understant how important was the city of Rio de Janeiro for the construction of the country and why Rio has such architectural variety. Then we will start our walking by the Mauá Square. This Square is one of the regions with the greatest architectural variety in the city. There, it is possible to see five architectural styles from different decades of 20th and 21th centuries.

After this, we will walk towards Cinelândia, a walk of approximately 2km, visiting buildings, discovering old 18th century churches hidden behind huge modern buildings and french style bakerys! Cinelândia is another square full of historical examples of Brazilian architecture. It holds 5 of the 10 original buildings that remain from the opening of Rio Branco's Avenue in 1905. We'll explore their facades, their details and our last stop will be the Federal Justice Cultural Center. This building preserves an original court room from the beggining of the 20th century.
Other things to note

I'm a grad student of History of Brazilian Arts and Architecture, a certified tour guide and coffee lover! I took three years of architecture but then swapped to Civil Engineering, which I graduated in 2016. Rio de Janeiro, besides being my home, is also my largest study laboratory. I like to use the tours to share with people the two subjects that I like the most to study: Architecture and the city of Rio de Janeiro.

Where you'll be

In this tour we will explore the surroundings of Rio Branco Avenue, from one end to the other. It is a very emblematic avenue in the heart of Rio de Janeiro's Historic Center, opened in 1905. Of the hundreds of buildings built in the first decade of the 20th century, 10 remain and they will be our focus. In addition to these, we will also learn about the stories behind the city's expansion and the new buildings that replaced the old ones.

I have been doing these kind of tours in places like Bordeaux and Brooklyn. Aline pairs the level of those experiences. She knows much more than what she can explain you during 2 hours, which is great. She doesn't need to repeat some content she just prepairs. She knows. She was also very generous with her time. At the end of the experience we just kept waking because we were all going in the same direction and she kept telling us stories of everything we were seing... again, she knows much more than she needs to give a tour. That's seldom found. The price is also very convenient for what you get.

Excelente passeio!

Really excellent tour which does a great job of telling the history of Rio (and partly Brazil) through the architecture that can be found throughout the Centro region. Aline does a great job of explaining everything and is clearly passionate about the subject. Highly recommended!

A Aline me permitiu essa experiência exatamente nesse sentido.

We spent the afternoon with Aline on the architecture tour and she was extremely knowledgeable about the history of Brazil and it’s influence on the Brazilian landscape. It was a great way to explore and learn about the city. I would highly recommend it.
