What you'll do

Our classes aim to have an easy and direct approach to drawing and painting. It is best to come with some artistic experience, however we can customise our programs to suit your skill level.
You will be taught how to observe the location and make choices to best compose your artwork. We will give you valuable insight on how to convert your 3D vision into a 2D representation.
Light, shadow, colour, shape, scale, size are the basic elements that you'll learn to manipulate in composing your artwork.
You will be given plenty of technical information, but we try to keep things simple. With this in mind, each stage of our workshop has been designed to build your confidence and to enable us to gauge your needs as required.
We offer drawing and painting in water-based media, allowing for speed and spontaneity in your work. Our workshops are for small groups only, this enables us to offer a very personalised experience.
We offer a full-day art workshop - seven hour duration.
9.30-12.30: Meet in the atelier/gallery.
Introduction to composition and tonal value.
Drawing en-plein-air, rural or village setting.
12.30-14.00: Lunch break. (lunch not included in the price)
14.00-18.00: Reconvene back in the atelier.
Basics in watercolour painting techniques.
Painting en-plein-air (location may differ from the morning session).
My expertise is in oil-encaustic medium - workshops are on demand.
Other things to note
Our small-group workshops can be adapted to suit all skill levels, though some artistic experience is preferable. Transport to Jouques by bus is easy (bus 120 from Aix), more info on enquiry. We also offer excellent, affordable accommodation, check AirBnB for 'Provence village experience - Jouques'.

I'm Jean-Louis, I was born in France & have lived many years in Australia. I now live in Provence with my Australian wife Fiona, a designer-photographer (BA design) & partner in Artelier Provence - who manages all the logistics and communications.
One of my aims is to pass-on what I've learned. As a long-time art-educator, I have the skills to help you build on your knowledge, to confidently pursue your art practice and so enjoy it more.
I'm fluent in French and English, as well as knowledgable in many forms of art media. I have a BA in Fine Art (painting and print-making), as well as a teaching degree, plus loads of experience. I've taught in schools and private classes for over 30 years and had several successful solo and shared exhibitions. Currently I exhibit in my atelier/gallery in Jouques. See my Gallery online: Artelier Provence.

I had a wonderful day in Jouques with my new friends Jean-Louis and Fiona. They were wonderful friendly hosts and I learnt a lot from the artistic expertise of Jean-Louis! We spent some time in the art studio going over some basics in composition and drawing and soon after we were 'en plain air' drawing in the most scenic and classic of gardens. After lunch, we headed up the hill to a glorious scene looking towards a chapel on the hill and spent the afternoon immersed in water colour painting. I really enjoyed the whole experience and as a beginner, the time spent with Jean-Louis was invaluable.

Jean-Louis is a very talented artist, and a great teacher of both theory and practice. The working studio is a short walk from breathtaking views of the Provence landscape. The workshop was tailored to my exact needs, and J-L is very generous in passing on his deep and extensive experience across a wide range of styles and media. While I have been painting for many years, I came away a better artist from my short time there.
