What you'll do

You’ll check in at 7:30am and gear up. You’ll get a briefing on ocean etiquette and safety along with how to interact with the dolphins, once you're in the water with them. You’ll leave the dock at 8:00am to seek out the pod. You’ll travel up or down the beautiful picturesque Kona coast, while seeking out the dolphins. Once you’re with the pod, you’ll get in the water from the extra large custom built swim platform for an easy on, easy off access to the dolphins. Dolphins are curious by nature and will immediately swim around you to check you out and show off their talents and they don’t disappoint. This is truly a unique encounter you can’t get anywhere else. This isn’t anything like being with them at the water park where you just get a photo op, you’ll actually be swimming with them in their natural habitat. Once that adrenaline rush is over you’ll be back on the boat heading over to one of the many reefs along our coast to snorkel with tropical fish and sometimes sea turtles. If everyone in the group is okay with fishing, I'll troll a few lines to and from the reef in order to get everyone dinner. We'll clean and fillet our catch and bag it up for you. There are a few local restaurants that will cook it for you if you don't have a way to cook it yourself. There is no other experience in Kona like this. My boat does have a bathroom.

I am a Captain of vessels up to 30 tons with a Master rating and am a qualified 1st mate of ocean going vessels of up to 100 tons. In college I majored in electrical engineering with dual minors in economics and marine biology. My area of focus of marine biology is in pelagic marine life and dolphins and sharks. I teach conservation and our impact to the marine life, on every tour, in a fun and interactive way. My tours allow me to teach people from all over the world and give them a better understanding of the importance of the oceans and why we need to keep them clean.

Where you'll be

Along the way you’ll see both the beauty and ruggedness of the Big Island coastline. You’ll be swimming in both open ocean and over beautiful coral reefs, depending on the location of the dolphins. You’ll see a lava tube you’ll definitely want to photograph and show friends and family back home. You’ll swim in the warm clear blue waters off of the Kona coast that has an abundance of tropical fish and green sea turtles.

What a great experience! My husband, daughter and myself booked for a dolphin swim on her birthday. We were unfortunately unable to actually swim with the dolphins, because the pod met us before we left the harbor (where swimming is prohibited for safety reasons), but we got to watch them from close up frolic and leap. We appreciate the crew’s approach to the dolphin experience- it is very much centered on not imposing upon or pestering the dolphins. They watch body language and don’t chase or herd the dolphins. If the dolphins are curious and want to engage, they do. That is the sort of interaction with these beautiful animals that we all should want. But this experience didn’t end with the dolphins! After spending time watching them, we headed out to snorkel the reef. The crew put lines in the water on the way and a fellow traveler got to reel in his first big ocean fish! We got to the reef and spent time, with guidance for us newbies, snorkeling the reef. At the end of the trip, we all went home with a big bag of fresh ocean fish, and recommendations for grilling it. All along the way, the captain and first mate shared about the island, history, stewardship of the ocean and more. They were laid back and friendly. A great trip, and one that we would highly recommend!

Awesome trip!!! Def book with these guys. You can tell they really care about what they do, making sure that their guests feel comfortable and have a great time while making sure to respect the animals and sea. We saw a TON of dolphins to start- unfortunately they were in the harbor so we couldn’t swim with them, but that’s nature and the way is was that day. We still got to watch them jumping and playing which was super cool. Brent and Scott threw out the lines and my husband reeled in a 20lb fish which totally made his day! We then went snorkeling- brent was great at making sure everyone was comfortable and safe. You can tell these guys love what they do. Also, as a bonus perk, there were only 5 of us on the boat, so it was a super comfy, personalized experience. These guys rock and I’d absolutely do any tour they offer in the future! Thanks for an awesome trip!!!

This was simply amazing. Great safety brief by Brent on where everything is located on the boat, how to feel better if you have sea sickness, and overall what their roles were for the morning. We tooled up (down?) the coast and had 45 mins with dolphins swimming right up next to us. Captain Howard and Brent did a great job of locating the dolphins and keeping us on track to see the most of them. Then we went to beautiful reefs and snorkeled for another 30 minutes? At this point I lost track of time! The boat was perfectly sized for the small party of 6 we had (4 in a separate family and 2 of us, this is the largest party they’ll book). Captain Howard did not try to rush us or our experience at all. Brent was great with the kids and even had a noodle for me when I realized I hadn’t been in an open ocean for a while. Neither of them overwhelmed us with talking or silence- Brent showed us some sights off the coast and also offered some spots nearby for more exploring. We ended the morning by catching fresh Ono (responsibly and literally- the mom in the party of 4 was the one who reeled it in!!), which we were all able to bring some home! Brent recommended a way to cook it easily, which worked out well in our resort room. Highly recommend this three in one experience!! And this is coming from someone who doesn’t like to pay for tour type activities and rather explore on my own. Book now!

This was such an amazing experience! We saw the dolphins, but didn’t get to swim by them as other crowds were scaring them away, but it was so beautiful and I admire the captain and mate respecting the wildlife and ocean so much! Definitely worth it and will do again next time I’m on the big island!

Great trip. my grandson & I had a wonderful time. Saw dolphins & even caught an Ono fish on our trip back to the harbor. The small group was much better than a packed boat. It was easy to get around the deck. Definitely worth booking this excursion. 😎
