"We learned how to sprinkle green mangos with chili salt to offset their sourness" "We discovered that slivers of fresh jackfruit taste like juicy-fruit gum, but with the texture of chicken"
Put simply, the sort of next level fruit knowledge, AND FLAVOR EXPERIENCE, that everyone deserves to gain on vacation in Hawaii.

We had a wonderful time at Janelle’s farm/garden. There was a bit slow start as we arrived one hour in advance and at a wrong place, so, I would advise future guests to read Janelle’s driving instructions closely and follow them, not the Google maps app.
The experience was bi-partite- first, our “tour guide”, Carson, told us a about the history of the area and its battles with new lava flows- I use quotes because the feeling was that Carson is a friend enjoying showing friends around. I enjoyed and benefited nightly from a comprehensive strategically planned tour around the garden. I write “strategically” because there are about 500 species, if I am not mistaken, growing in the garden... Carson was able to fill us in on many of them: uses, flavors, seasons, and on a few hazards a novice might encounter in a tropical garden.
Two hours later we came back to the shed where Janelle was already waiting for us with fruits to sample, home made beverage, and more insights to tropical farming. All in all, if you would like to learn more about tropical gardening, meet friendly knowledgeable kind thoughtful people, after being with whom you feel inspired, do yourself a favor- go!

Beautiful property, loved seeing all the different variety of fruits. It would have been nice if there was more fruit available to buy. We planned to load up but instead only got a couple of delicious papayas. She also gave us a couple lilikoi and apple bananas. If you are going to be in the Puna it’s a fun thing to do!

Do it! We were hesitant to drive over when the day came, but are so glad we did. Carson taught us so much valuable information for living on or visiting Hawai’i Island. Janelle served us delicious fruits (the grilled ‘ulu was one of my favorites) and shared funny stories. Carson also gave us the scoop on how to get to the nearby Mermaid Pools - bring your sneakers, a swimsuit, and your new fruits!
