What you'll do
We will stroll along mountain trails, often in old growth conifers, enjoying the sights and sounds of the forest. In the fall, a wealth of mushrooms fruit in the evergreen forests of the Cascade Mountains. We will encounter many species and study them in their native environment. We may return with delicious edible mushrooms, but my goals for this experience are to introduce you to the fascinating study of mushrooms, and provide you with a foundation for safe mushroom foraging during a memorable visit to Pacific Northwest forest. For the experienced mycophile, I offer local knowledge and access to prime habitat.
For guests coming from the Tacoma and Olympia areas, I am able to offer this experience in prime habitat further south. Please inquire. I am also able to accommodate groups larger than three who are willing to provide some of the transportation.
Foraging for mushrooms is quite different and more relaxed than hiking to a destination. The moment we enter the forest, we will be at our destination!
Other things to note
Bring sunscreen and rain gear. Mushrooms thrive in rainy weather, so be prepared for rain, and also for cold weather since we are likely to be at much higher elevation than Seattle. I recommend you bring a knapsack for your personal belongings.

I am a retired surgeon. My wife and I had a farm in the Cascade Mountains for many years, where we spent a great deal of time with our children and became avid mushroom foragers. I am a field trip guide for the Puget Sound Mycological Society. (Those trips are for members only and this experience is not sponsored by the Society.) I am a deeply committed environmentalist.
Where you'll be
We will drive east into the Cascade Mountains where mushrooms abound in the fall , and forage along forest roads and trails in national forest. (Transportation from and return to our meeting place is provided for free.)

Dan is a great guide for mushroom foraging. This was my first experience in mushroom hunting with a guide. His knowledge was fantastic and delivered in an easy to understand format. I learned a lot and enjoyed the time in the forest. Dan knows the right locations to take his guests for great success even with difficult weather conditions.

We had a blast and learned so much by foraging with Dan. He has such a wealth of knowledge, recommends tips for folks of all different fungi familiarity, and makes sure you make it home with some tasty mushrooms to cook up (and recommended good recipes!).
Dan's experience was very useful for both me and my wife, despite our differences in mushroom identification skill level. it would be a great experience for a beginner, or a foraging veteran that is new to the area and looking for tips on the local varieties. We had a great day and some great conversations :)

There's no question that Dan knows his stuff, and he skillfully shares it in a way that makes the field of mushroom foraging and identification feel accessible rather than intimidating. We had a great time scrambling around the woods getting better at finding and identifying mushrooms ourselves throughout the day and left not only with a couple of edible mushrooms but also with a ton of new knowledge. If you've ever been curious about mushroom foraging I would highly recommend this hands-on and informative experience as an excellent introduction!

My nieces, who were new to mushrooming, and I had a wonderful day in the forest. I've been mushrooming for several years, but was looking to learn about new varieties and areas; mission accomplished! And my newbie nieces have fallen in love with mushrooming. Daniel took us to a great spot, where we found a variety of mushrooms and learned about the kinds we take and eat and those we don't.
