What you'll do
We'll start our tour at the heart of the Old City, the Independence Square, inaugurated in 1836 in order to link the old part with the new one. There we will be able to see some of Montevideo's most iconic buildings, such as Palacio Salvo, rising 100 meters high, which made it the tallest building in South America from 1928 until 1935. We will also see Palacio Estevez (1837) and Presidential Tower. Right in the centre of the square, we have Artigas Shrine, a huge monument of our national hero emplaced in 1923, which is 17 meters high and weighs 30 tons. Then, we will descend to the mausoleum, guarded by soldiers of the Corps of Blandengues. Then, we will see The Gateway of the Citadel, which is one of the only remnants of the times when Montevideo was a fortified city, until 1829. After that, we're gonna have a short stroll to the Solis Theatre, which was first sketched in 1840 by Italian architect Carlo Zucchi and inaugurated in 1856 with the Opera "Ernani", written by Verdi. Later on, we'll walk through Sarandí pedestrian street until Matriz Square, created in 1726. There we have a beautiful marble fountain. The square is surrounded by the Metropolitan Cathedral (1804) and the Cabildo (1803), an early City council. After a short walk, we'll arrive at Zabala square (1890), inspired by French architecture and with outstanding constructions surrounding it. End of the journey!
I am a passionate traveler, having been in over 30 countries so far. I have lived in Australia for four years, where I got my Business Administration degree at a Macquarie University. I am passionate about Photography, languages, scuba diving, hiking and everything related to nature. Since 19, I started trying to make tourists feel home, showing my city and also nearby places. I can Speak English, Spanish and some Portuguese, Italian and Hebrew. I’m sure we’ll all enjoy!
