What you'll do

Hike Devil's Peak via Knife Edge & Newlands Forest

Lace up your hiking boots and prepare for an epic day hike and scramble to one of Cape Town's gems! We'll hike Devil's Peak via the adventurous Mowbray Ridge, Knife Edge and direct scrambles which is one of my personal favorite hiking routes in the Western Cape. After reaching the 1001m high summit we will descend via the forested Newlands Ravine and return along the Contour Path to where it all began.

During the hike we'll discuss the local Fauna & Flora that occurs here. Some days we'll get spoilt with wildlife sightings, but the focus will be on the unique Fynbos vegetation covering the mountain slopes. This is a nature experience where you will have the chance to come away with a fresh perspective of the rich biodiversity found within the Cape Floristic Region.

Devil's Peak is an incredible hike with breathtaking views & scenery if the weather plays along! But it is demanding in terms of being strenuous (1000 meter elevation gain), exposure to heights (sheer vertical drops) & technical hiking (using your hands to scramble rock pitches, and rugged terrain).

If a full days nature-focused mountain adventure is what you're looking for then this is the hike for you!

Growing up within the boundaries of the incredible Table Mountain National Park I had the mountains of Silvermine as my literal backyard. This is where my love for the Table Mountain range all began!

Fast forward 30 years and today I'm a full-time mountain guide in the Western Cape with professional accreditation by the legal bodies in South Africa after starting out in 2007 as a volunteer guide with school children.

Sharing my love for nature by leading interpretive nature trails & adventurous hikes across the fynbos covered mountains of the Cape allows me to live out my passion daily.

Where you'll be

We will do a circular hike from Rhodes Memorial to the summit of DEVIL'S PEAK (1001m elevation), returning via Newlands Forest.

Views of False Bay, the Cape Flats, Table Bay, Lion's Head, Table Mountain & the City Bowl are all possible should there be no clouds on the summit. However, it's about more than the vistas!

This is an amazing hiking experience with Justin. The challenge of climbing pitches hiking along exposed single track matched with amazing views is exhilarating. Justin knows every plant on the mountain and he taught me a lot about the local fauna. I highly recommend this hike to anyone who wants to get off the beaten track. Probably best to be in shape.

Justin was passionate, competent and didactic during this technical hike. He made sure to lead us through the harder parts and showed us amazing sights. Also made sure to have all the necessary snacks and beverages. He was patient and even gave us a ride back which was very generous. Great guide!

Justin was an absolutely amazing guide for our hike up Devils Peak. He is extremely knowledgable of the history, geography, flora and fauna of Table Mountain National Park. Truly wish we had time for an additional hike with Justin. An absolute must do for any adventure seeker and/or nature enthusiast. Thanks again Justin for an unforgettable day on the mountain.

This excursion with Justin was astounding! I love to hike, and I’m in moderately good+ shape, but I didn’t want to tackle this one by myself; Justin was the perfect guide. It is obvious how much loves his home, and he is a warehouse of knowledge about the biomes of the area. He is thorough and thoughtful—as a teacher, finding and explaining that beautiful native plant life, and as a guide, pointing out what I should avoid along the trails and giving demonstrations and real-time advice for the tougher ascents. When someone loves the mountain as much as Justin does, it’s very inspirational to the newcomer to hike the responsible way and want to do your part to keep Cape Town as pristine as she can be. Communication was Justin ahead of the hike was helpful and accurate. He was friendly, helpful, and good natured on the hike itself. This helped me start my Cape Town visit with a bang and set the tone for an incredible week!

I hurt my back just before the hike, but Justin was so accommodating to fit a hike around my needs. Could not have asked for a better experience, and was so happy with what I was able to complete with Justin. I felt comfortable hiking with him, easy conversation and his knowledge on the flora and fauna and the mountains was next to none, was so interesting. Next time I'm in Cape Town I will definitely be in touch with him for more hikes (this time injury free) - thanks Justin, you put the cherry on top of my holiday, and I'm so grateful for your time and flexibility!
