My family home. Mixed use urban. Mixed ethnic community. Public transpo. good. Wifi/Comcast-Xfinity, Sofa-bed, yellow walls, wood floor, 6 drawer dresser, small clothes/shoe rack, mini-fridge & micro. Shared bathroom. 2nd floor. Living room, dining room area shared. Dining area: Sink, gas stove, shared larger fridge if you need more space for food. Free laundry. Outings with guests, restaurant trips, bikes avail. Please, no smoking inside the house.
Although room is tiny, you will have own fridge, and microwave. You will find tea bags and a mug, and maybe some water, soda, juice or tea in the fridge, or downstairs in the cupboards (also contains hot chocolate, tea bags, and some noodle read to eat meals). A keurig is in the kitchen. There is a nicely stocked corner store, and they prepare a decent variety of hot foods. There is ample storage space in the 6 drawer dresser. Your room faces the south, which means a sunny morning, and also you will hear a passing train at all hours of the day and night. If absolute silence appeals to you, then maybe you should seek shelter somewhere else. There is a lock on the bathroom door. It is assumed that when there is no one in, the door will be open. If the door is shut, we assume it is occupied. If you don't know, knock. I like to keep the home as a family atmosphere, think of it like you are visiting Aunt Marlene.
The neighborhood is predominantly small row homes, working class area, mixed ethnically, with a blend of owners and renters. I can't say it enough: It is gritty. It is healthy. It is lively. But, it's not spit-shined and sanitized like downtown. There are several small businesses nearby, a corner grocery/deli/hot foods establishment, daycare on the next block, and a roofing business around the corner. There are a few bars within walking distance, if that's your thing. It is close to I-95, though one rarely hears traffic. The Amtrak, SEPTA, and Conrail lines zip by, and you can hear them as they pass. The park across the street has ample structures for children to enjoy, and a vast area to relax in. There is a large Baptist church on the next block, and other churches within walking distance. You can walk 20 minutes to a large supermarket, or take the bus to other shopping. This is not downtown, so we don't have the types and varieties of places you'd get there, but nevertheless, we have access to pretty much anything you'd need.
  • Nice experience, very uncomplicated, Marlene and Bob were very friendly hosts! Thank you :) I underrated the distance to the center. So if you want to stay out at night it will takes you approximately 1 hour to get back. But I would come back because of the nice tiny (private!) room and the kindness of Marlene & Bob!

  • This is my first time using Airbnb. I was skeptical at first but Marlene and Bob really made me feel like I was home. Because of that reason I picked their house for the second time again to stay for couple of days. I love staying there and what I love about their place is that I have my privacy and ladybird(Family Dog) is so protective. I would recommend this for anyone who is visiting Philadelphia!!! Thank you Marlene and Bob, I enjoyed spending time with you!

  • Discussing with Marlene and Bob was a learning experience. They know much and in depth about may subjects, they know one can change only a few things and are fantastic observers of how people live in the USA. It was a pleasure too to see them as a couple, so different yet do complementary.

  • Marlene and her husband Bob were warm, friendly hosts. I was in Philadelphia for a conference, and Marlene helped me plan how to get to the venue with public transportation. The accommodations were very comfortable, and the neighborhood had many convenient places to buy food.

  • See alot of people bashing the place but for the money it's decent and in the description it says under renovation ‍♂️

    Gee2019-06-21T00:00:00Z
  • If you want to be completely unsafe, enjoy the smell of urine, and love the feeling of sleeping in utter poverty, this is the place for you. There are signs everywhere that says “don’t mind the mess we will look good soon” that have been up for months. There’s one bathroom and the toilet does not work. Mind you, there are about six bedrooms in the house. The room downstairs that is advertised five times on this site is a hostel with the windows boarded up and the owner pokes his head in every day unannounced. I could go on but the more I think about the money I waste and my experience, I get completely pissed off.

  • Great value for what your paying. Close to church st market Frankford line train. Not the best neighborhood but definitely will be okay

  • When I was going to house I was thinking to fall asleep after took shower while on my way I was that much tired I mean. When I arrived to the house I literally shocked. House was smelling weird, bathroom was really dirty which is unusable and even sheets were smelling. Probably host doesn't change them between guests. Also room was not as pictures. I don’t even wanna talk about neighborhood, if you care about your car I wouldn't choose this one. Omg Worst experience ever with Airbnb.

    Mustafa2019-06-15T00:00:00Z

  • I’ve reported this house my whole stay I’ve called the Airbnb company throughtout the night , electricity was shut off , neighbors were rude stomping , louder over my head all night , yes I had music playing and I turned it off as soon as I was told to do so , never did I have a party ! Or whatever nelly is trying to infer & I also never stayed at her property 15-16th for her to actually be charging anything her home was just the way it was when I check in and check out SAME DAY! Not over night as I payed for because I was not satisfied with my stay

  • Working class neighborhood, walking distance to the Elevated train, safe on street parking. Nice large room an friendly hosts, including cats and dogs. The room is on the 2nd floor, a challenge if you have a large or heavy bag. Refrigerator and snacks (!) Very comfortable double bed, smaller bed and cot. These would not be suitable for very obese people. For travelers alone or from far away, a very homey experience.

My place is close to public transport. You’ll love my place because of the down to earth, no nonsense type of home, and neighborhood. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, business travelers, and furry friends (pets).
Typical row home, in Philadelphia. Learn how to live in a house only 14 feet wide! You will find tea bags and a mug, and maybe some water, soda, juice or tea in the fridge, there is a Keurig, and pods of coffee, tea bags or hot chocolate in the sideboard (maybe even some ready to eat noodle meals). There is a nicely stocked corner store, and they prepare a decent variety of hot foods. There is ample storage space. Your room faces the north, which means a sunny morning but not overwhelming, and also you will hear a passing train at all hours of the day and night. If absolute silence appeals to you, then maybe you should seek shelter somewhere else. I like to keep the home as a family atmosphere, think of it like you are visiting Aunt Marlene.
Neighborhood is working class, no pretense, gritty. Folks are friendly, and very helpful. No fancy facades in this neighborhood.
  • My stay at Marlene's was great. She made everything very comfortable for me and responded to my requests and concerns same day.

    Jasmine2018-02-20T00:00:00Z
  • The host canceled this reservation 2 days before arrival. This is an automated posting.

    Yae Hwan2018-08-14T00:00:00Z
  • Outstanding value and convenience are probably the best ways to describe this location. The neighborhood is residential, and the house itself feels like walking into the home of a family member. There is nothing inauthentic or contrived. This is a house that has seen much love. Stay here if you want to get to know the real Philadelphia.

    Alan2018-03-13T00:00:00Z
  • Cozy place, good parking, helpful kind neighbors, near public transportation and public park, corner store, drive to Philadelphia or drive to the country. Fine Dining, vintage and antique shops. Museums, Historic places and Parks are everywhere in Philadelphia, enjoy!

    Joanne2019-08-03T00:00:00Z
  • The hostess will do what she can to make you feel at home, a home away from home. Quiet, and comfort, like staying at your aunts, it’s as described. Easy to communicate and good neighbors.

    Joanne2019-02-28T00:00:00Z
  • It’s old so treat the space with care also a tip: if you’re looking for towels in the blue motif room, it’s in the dresser by the window and ask the current guest to work the oven. It’s tricky. Over all stay was pretty cool

    Jennifer2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Best bet for value and incredible hospitality. Treated like family. From the minute you walk in, you know that this house has known much love and support.

    Alan2018-08-09T00:00:00Z
  • I moved to Philly for the Cheesesteak....I stayed for the Marlene. She is the real deal: straight shooter, kind, and someone that when you first meet, you immepdiately feel like you have know each other for years. She offers a HOME. Hi! This house is close to the train (the “L”) And has Chinese and Jamaican food around the corner to the left on Frankford St. The house has a big back yard, big kitchen and sun room you are free to use.
You can use either bathroom, the kitchen, dining room, sunroom, backyard and of course your private room. Which is upstairs on the left at the top of the steps. Room has a moderate sized closet.
We are close to the train, and have Chinese and Jamaican food barely 50ft around the corner.
  • Was a cool place.

  • Kyle was a fantastic host, way more than I had expected from an air bnb stay! He opened his house to me and told me whatever I needed to just ask. There is absolutely nothing bad that I could say about my stay at Kyles. The place is in person exactly how it appears in the pictures. It is cozy, clean, safe, and affordable. I would stay again and recommend the place for anyone looking for a comfortable air bnb experience!

  • Great place to stay in Philly on a budget.

    Benjamin2019-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • My stay at Kyle's was fine. The room was a great size, very clean, the linens were brand new, there is even a fridge in the room. There is also a portable heater if you get too cold. The bathroom was clean and the kitchen had all the necessary appliances. The home is just an 9 minute walk from the MFL ("El") stop. My stay was unique because there were other guests staying at the same time who smoked and had young children. So even though the listing says smoking is not allowed and the home is not suitable for kids, that turned out not to be the case for me. The house is located in Frankford. Safety was not an issue for me but it's a bit far from CC and not many amenities around. There are lots of barbershops/hair salons and Chinese food takeout spots if you're looking for that. It might be wise to take a minute to learn a little bit about the Frankford neighborhood so you're more prepared than I was. Kyle is a good host and really chill. Let him know what you'll need in advance and he's good about ensuring you have a comfortable stay.

  • Kyle is a very kind host, he looks to be a nice a person and has a beautiful cat. The house is not very clean but it is not dirty, for American standards is ok. Also the house only have the essentials, it is almost empty, but is ok if don't care about it. The house is located between two subway stations, both of them can take you to downtown in 30 minutes. The subway drive can be very pleasant and you can enjoy a common Philly's street views. The house is also located in neighborhood which can be strange to foreign women. I could walk around without concerns, nothing happened to me but I didn't feel that I could arrive late at night at the room, because I didn't feel it would be save for me.

  • Be aware that there is absolutely no hot water no real kitchen and it is in a very dangerous territory in Philadelphia if you are OK with that & can adapt into the nightlife in an inner-city then this is a place for you, but if you would like proper amenities and a safe place to be I would search elsewhere.

  • Estela and her husband greeted us upon arrival and made us feel as family. She took care of us all the time, even before we got to her place. We were so pleased with the details Estela thought for us; from water in the fridge, sweet and salad snacks and even such a beautiful book with children tales for our future baby. Estela thank you so very much, it was a pleasure to meet you and Charly! All the best and hope to see you again!!

    Guedis2017-01-04T00:00:00Z
  • The Airbnb itself is great. 2 beds in one room, 1 bed in the other, and a futon in the living room. We were able to also fit a full-size air mattress in the living room. We did have some issues with the area though. One of the people staying with us had their car broken into with a socket, but nothing was taken. The whole passenger side window was shattered along with a spider crack on the windshield. So that is something to be aware of when staying here.

  • The air conditioner was the best part of the stay.! That and the clean bathroom...otherwise, the bed sheets did not appear to be changed, though I was told they had been. The host did agree to put new ones on, though I had already gone out and purchased some to use. The bedside stands did not appear to have been wiped down and were dusty. This could be related to the “remodeling” though uncertain. Communication was good with the hosts. It was quiet for a one night’s stay, which was a welcome relief, despite the uncleanliness of the bed.

  • Great place. Stayed here before and much has improved. The place is still being renovated but it’s very clean and comfortable.

  • We decided to stay late last minute so we booked an air BNB and it was the best idea ever! They responded within a minute and answer any questions we had about th place. They were remodeling while we were there so the pace will look amazing when finished. Thanks again guys!!

  • Some of the reviews are not fabulous and I can see some hesitation at first but I think they are truly taking steps to improve their service. Which is a good sign. Many hosts jump in and get carried away by the demand and excitement my room was very clean and the neighborhood shows signs of improving. Host was open to feedback and I'd stay again. Thank you for allowing me to come at last minute.

    Tara2019-09-18T00:00:00Z
  • Hosts were very responsive to my needs at every turn. The bathroom was unkempt but due to it being a shared accommodation that made sense. The neighborhood is going through a transition so not best to travel during the evening. They tried , but this listing didn’t match my standards of accommodations nor value. Won’t be returning.

  • Nice place to stay in Philadelphia for fairly cheap. The train is a short walk away, but I would recommend taking an Uber at night. It’s about a 30 minute ride to center city from my experience.

  • It was peaceful and a very streamlined check in process. Plus that bed was super comfortable!

  • Thank you East Coast. Reservation was as expected. The bathroom is shared with other guests - bring shower shoes if needed. Be sure to read details in the description about amenities that are available.

    Cody2019-07-26T00:00:00Z
  • The room is as beautiful as described. However, I did not feel comfortable. The host was distant and rude. Actually, between the 5 different entities I spoke to verbally and digitally, I do not know who the host is. There needs to be more light in the halls. It feels creepy. My comfort did not seem to be a concern for the company. Customer service training is needed. It would also be nice to know who is in the house. The layout can leave a woman unsure of how safe she is.

  • Having a private entrance and a private parking spot is a definite plus! The airbnb was 20 minutes away from the central city. Bring extra Pillows!

  • Great space. Private parking. Very clean. Great for my tiny family. We really enjoyed our time here.

  • Included all the amenities you could ask for and more. The space is clean and large enough for 3 people. Nelly always responded quickly and was flexible with our schedule.

  • Economical. Comfortable. Easy to communicate with Nelly. Bathroom could have been cleaner

  • Adorable and clean apartment in an authentic Philly neighborhood. Host thoughtfully provides toiletries and hair dryer, as well as coffee, tea and even some light snacks. Neighborhood is quiet and convenient for getting into downtown Philly. Gated parking space is a plus.

  • At Nelly's place you will feel like you are visiting a family member. She makes you feel at home.

  • We had a very comfortable 4 nights at Nelly's basement apartment. As described, it was cosy, private, and had everything we needed for our stay. The apartment is close to the metro, and the off street parking space was good. Nelly was lovely, good with communication and making sure we had everything we needed. This was a good value stay.

    Annegret2019-01-06T00:00:00Z
  • The kitchen is nice with almost everything you need. The location is good but the air conditioner in the bedroom is very noisy, and the sound of the old fan too. Mosquitoes are terrible, air and odors definitely not for people with allergy, but the host is very nice and warm.

Middle room, warm in winter (radiator), cool in summer (window a/c), wood floors. Eat at the dining room table. Shared bathroom. You will be treated as one of the family. We are close to major roads & public transportation, & shopping. IKEA bed, new inner spring mattress (bought July, 2019). Small fridge (if you need more space, you can use downstairs fridge). Wardrobe and closet for your stuff. Outings with guests, or try out restaurants together upon request.
This is the middle room, with one small window. White walls, red curtain. There is a double bed, single airmattress stored under the bed. The room contains a dresser, shelves, a stereo, small fridge, chair, collapse-able desk and microwave. Our home is an older row home. We have nice neighbors, it's a working class neighborhood, in a gritty corner of the city. There is ample street parking, lots of public transportation AND 2 adult bikes available for your use. Note that our home is in various stages of remodeling, and at this time, the dining room and back room are in 'flux', as cabinetry is half-complete (so lots of boxes, and a few piles of stuff around). We enjoy travel, and are welcoming of fellow travelers. There is a gas stove, sink and refrigerator in the dining area. There is a second sink, and laundry in the former kitchen area. The room and shared space is cleaned between guests, and at least once a week. I sweep and vacuum daily. This is a place getting upgraded bit by bit, please be understanding. If there is something you need cleaned immediately, let me know. If you are OCD about things being out of place, or a random dust bunny offends you, stay at the Hilton.
Great people. Caring neighbors. But, it is urban and gritty. This is not the sanitized down-town. It is a mixed race neighborhood. A little graffiti here and there doesn't define us as a people. There might be someone fixing a car on the street. Someone might have a radio too loud. You might catch a fleeting whiff of marijuana. But, they are wonderful people. The neighborhood is safe. I have lived here since 1992. Easily accessible food at several corner stores, can walk to various types of public transportation, and there are 3 very well maintained but older bicycles for you to use. The grocery stores are about a 20 min. walk down Aramingo Avenue, or a short bus ride down Torresdale Ave. There are many areas to go shopping within a mile, 15-20 min. walk, or 5 minute drive. Carmella Playground is a good place to go for a walk, bounce a basketball, or even try out your skateboarding skills. I don't know how better to describe this neighborhood. If you stay here, and you don't agree with my description, let me know. Don't act passive/aggressive, smile, chat with me, and then sneak onto Airbnb and rate this place straight 1's.
  • Marlene is a nice lady, she is very welcoming and took me to see the tourist attractions area, because I was kinda lost.

    Andrea2016-04-02T00:00:00Z
  • Marlene was a great host, very welcoming and accomodating. She showed us around the house and then let us get comfortable. She also let us use the other room she had even though we had only booked one room. She let me store my bike in her living room while we drove around town during the day, which was a huge help. The rooms were just as described, cosy and homey, and the dogs were super friendly. Parking was easy just outside the house as well. Would definitely stay here again!

    Vincent2019-03-15T00:00:00Z
  • They are under construction at the moment but still manage to keep the place pretty clean and looking presentable. Hosts are friendly and respond quickly to messages. Also, got a good deal on the price due to construction. Definately one of the good bargain prices out there. I will come again if I am in the area.

  • Would not recommend, priced only slightly under the private rooms in the area. The beds are 4 inch mattress on slats. You will feel each slat under you. The bathroom door is partially blocked by the tub/shower, and requires you to turn sideways to enter the bathroom.

  • Place is great!

    Cindy2019-04-30T00:00:00Z
  • Renovations are still on going but Dave's a great and very helpful cohost, keeps the place clean for guests..

    Cindy2019-06-07T00:00:00Z
  • Great Value and clean place. Don’t expect the Double Tree by Hilton either. The host is a good guy and and approachable. You get a towel and a blanket. Shared bathroom. Clean comfortable bed and pillow. As far as the neighborhood, not the best. I would bring earplugs for the guests that snore and a mobile charger because there’s no outlet in the room. You can walk a few blocks to a little grocery store or the subway. But for the price, I would definitely stay again.

    Julio2019-03-10T00:00:00Z
  • Honestly it should be cheaper. There’s no kitchen, living room, common area period. There is one room with 6 bunks. 1 outlet. No heat. Just a dusty bathroom ( paper taped all over the floor & the toilet seat cover was literally broken in complete half). And the cohost seemed to live in the room on the bottom bunk Not downstairs. Downstairs is still being renovated and it’s only the living room and kitchen.

    Taylor2019-03-31T00:00:00Z
  • Good price for just staying overnight

    Chet2019-05-26T00:00:00Z
  • Ok, but only one bathroom, and no kitchen.

    Blanca2019-08-15T00:00:00Z
  • A fine place for the price. The neighborhood is definitely sketchy so think twice about going out past dark

  • Safety is based on who shows up. Men and women all sleep in the same room like a dorm. Sleeps 6 people.

  • They are renovating but I’m sure once it’s done it will be a nice place (: It was a wee cold but he offered to turn up the heat no problem. The blankets are fuzzy(:

  • The place is just okay for the price, suitable for just overnight stay. The biggest con is there no cardboard/locker where you can store your belongings.

    Kenney Phuti2019-07-01T00:00:00Z

  • This is an affordable place to stay in Philadelphia. But the area is not the best, but it was ok to sleep and go.

  • This was my first stay at a hostel, so I don’t have anything else to compare it to. Given the price and pictures, I didn’t expect anything extravagant and my expectations were on point. The place is under renovation so just remember that. However, even for being under renovation, it could have been cleaner and more sanitary. The bathroom was a bit scary and I only used it when necessary. It was also completely clogged overnight. I advise you bring your own hand soap unless you are comfortable sharing a bar of soap with strangers to wash your hands. The shared sleeping space had a bit of a funky smell. There was a pillow on my bunk but no sheets. I walk in to the room that was supposed to have them, but couldn’t tell if the bin was dirty or had clean items so I ended up not having a sheet or blanket of any kind. It’s okay bc it wasn’t cold. I just didn’t feel sanitary without the sheets. I just needed a place to rest my head for one night and I got just that. I will say that you can find very nice private rooms in good neighborhoods for much less or the same price if you book it in time so I would just use this as a last resort option like in my scenario. One thing I did like was how informative their instructions for check in and out are and that they send them to you personally to avoid any confusion. Adding a power strip to the shared room has potential to improve scores as there is only one outlet in an inconvenient spot. The people sharing the room with me were courteous and polite. They respected my things, my space, and were still approachable. The only major complaint I do have is the couple who came in an occupied the top bunks the night I stayed there. They came in at 1am, were very loud and obnoxious, opened and shut their luggage a bunch of times after they loudly threw it up to the top. And then decided to talk and laugh across bunk beds for a solid hour to an hour an a half in a loud whisper as if it would mask their noise. They also got up at 4am to leave and made so much noise that I just got up and played games on my phone until they left so I could actually sleep for the night.

  • The rooms are under renovation, full of toxic paint smells. No windows can be opened for ventilation. There is an air condition but does not help, except making huge noise at night. The paint odor is very thick and makes me unable to sleep. When I ask the host to change a room, he said he did not smell anything. I got headache, dizziness, breathing trouble and eye irritation in the night and second day morning. It's like a gas chamber. Stay away, for your health.
