  • A great host with a clean space. Quick responder to messages and very clean! Will book again!!

  • Great place! There's a small walkway that covers the area between the main house & guest house but it's very private. One suggestion is to bring movies as the very thoughtful TV anteanna is fickle. There is a redbox 10 minutes away! Great place, great stay, will stay again if I visit the area.

  • A great place to stay that is right off 95. Def more comfortable than any local hotel, and nicer too.

  • Stephanie had everything in order when we arrived and there were many little touches that made us feel welcome. Since we were spending Christmas there having a Christmas tree was a wonderful surprise and the perfect touch for our family celebration. We will stay here again when are in VA. Thank you for your excellent hospitality Stephanie!

  • My family (wife,me and 2 toddlers) stayed here for a night to split up our trip to the beach. The location right off the I 95 was very convenient and easy to find. The bathrooms were fully stocked making getting in the road the next morning very quick. Would definitely consider staying again next year.

  • Very clean and enjoyable stay.

    Russell2019-07-20T00:00:00Z
  • We booked this house to take our 6 children to Kings Dominion/Soak City for 4 days. The house was clean and accommodated us fine with the addition of a few air mattresses. We would stay here again as long as it does not exceed the cost of a good hotel within 15 minutes. Our only issue was with getting a hold of our host. The confirmation email told us to contact her by phone for entry instructions. We texted her en route and did not receive an answer. Before leaving Kings Dominion to head for the house, we did check email on a whim and entry instructions were there. This would have been a bigger problem had we gone straight to the house as we don’t carry data on our phones, which leads us to the second communication issue. We tried signing in to the Wi-Fi at the house and could not get a connection. We got the message that we had connected but no internet access. Again, we texted the host, this time at the number on the paper in the house, and received no response yet again. We had no Wi-Fi all week and never heard a thing from the host about it. It was slightly frustrating having no communication from the host. If there had been a major issue, not sure what we would have done. Linens, blankets, and pillows were on all three beds. Six towels and wash cloths were provided for bathing. There were a couple of dish towels and a sponge in the kitchen for doing dishes (there is no dishwasher- not a problem for us as we had brought paper goods and plastic ware). The kitchen was well-equipped with a toaster, microwave, coffee pot, dishes, pots/pans, etc. There is a washer and dryer with laundry soap should you forget yours or need to run an emergency load. The house was equipped with a DVD player and TV in the living room as well as TVs in 2 of the bedrooms. The host provided a several niceties such as a bar of soap, lotion, razors, a few rolls of toilet paper, and hand soap in each bathroom as well as dish soap, hand soap, a roll of paper towels, a few garbage bags, instant coffee packets, sugar packets, and oatmeal packets in the kitchen. Some things to be aware of- the shower in the master bedroom is a 2 foot by 2 foot stall and the only way to soap up is to turn the water off. The second bathroom has a full tub/shower in it. Also the house is old so the wood floors creak with every step, the lights flicker at times, and the water pressure decreases when in use at multiple locations. Again these are not issues for most people, but something to be aware of. Overall it was a nice stay in an older home only 5 minutes from Kings Dominion. We are only giving 4 stars because of the lack of communication.

    Kelly2019-06-14T00:00:00Z
  • Neat, clean, and comfortable! Bigger than we needed, so it would be great for a whole family. A little difficult to find.

    Shaerlin2018-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • The house is situated far enough back from a main drag that we confidently allowed our dog to roam around the yard unleashed, but do know that a substantial amount of traffic comes by at a 55 mph speed limit. We found the house to be comfortable and well air conditioned on a particularly balmy September weekend. The sitting room is great for having conversations, but not for entertainment, as the Direct TV pulled in few channels, and those came in scrambled and unreliable. The DVD player had a double-feature edition of the first two Rush Hour movies sitting on top, in addition to uncovered discs of Failure to Launch and X2: X-Men United, which acted as sufficient indicators of how anachronistic the entertainment selection was. We didn’t care, but you might. No complaints about cleanliness. The kitchen is stocked with utensils and cooking ware, although beware the lack of rubber or wooden utensils, so be gentle on the metal pans. The implements are quite old themselves, but function just fine. We made sure to wash off each item we used before cooking just for safety’s sake, but there is no particular need to do so. Plenty of space for parking in the driveway and easy access to I-95 makes this Doswell house a strong option if you need to stay in the Richmond area.

You will find the refrigerator and cupboards stocked with breakfast items, so after your journey get a good night rest and wake up to breakfast supplies at the ready. We do have a "cleaning fee" I have a full time job and I'm usually not available at the time for cleaning so I pay a fair wage to those who keep the cottage clean. Quiet neighborhood, you will probably hear birds chirping and singing in the morning. No dogs are in the Cottage you may see small dogs, Topsy and Gracie, they will be kept away although they may bark at you from a distance, Topsy a Bichon likes attention he has a tail, Gracie - Cocker Poo and she is getting old and cranky very short tail we recommend you leave her alone, and Coco the Chihuahua is our latest addition, may say hello. We are semi-rural, the worst animal you may see is a deer driving up the driveway occasionally they may activate the motion sensor light usually in the winter months. Deer tend to scatter when you see them. Off in the distance you will hear far away trains passing by, it's not loud at our location but if you listen you can hear them. Feel free to walk around the property and enjoy the forest and grassy areas.
  • A very stylish and clean place. Although it was closer to the host's home than I anticipated, it was very private! Would recommend to anyone who wants to stay not too far from Richmond.

  • We were so pleased with our stay at The Cottage. It was quiet, and cozy. The perfect place to land after a hectic summer, and still have access to Richmond and King's Dominion. The house was so clean, and inviting. There were snacks, and good coffee. The entertainment system is terrific. We felt like we were at home. The hosts thought of everything. Extra chargers for all manner of cell phones. Every detail was pleasant. Highly recommend.

Not only did ray think of every little thing you could need while you stay but he even had the fridge stocked and all kinds of snacks from chips to fresh fruit. • This cottage was beyond our expectations. The fridge was stocked with plenty of food, there were plenty of linens, and the furnishings were comfortable. It's just over a mile to R-MC's campus, and I would call that a nice walk if the road had a sidewalk all the way. Loved it!

This is a house that is perfect for a couple or individual who wants the comfort of a perfectly appointed cottage in a quiet Victorian-era Southern town. Near Richmond, Williamsburg and Charlottesville, but very uniquely Ashland.
This house has held many writers seeking a week of solitude. it is full of books, with lots of places and porches to sink into, a comfy chair in which to read, think, listen to music or take a nap. It is also perfect for parents visiting their children in college (Randolph Macon is in the town) or coming for the Christmas or other holidays.
Ashland is a small, lively college town (Randolph-Macon is nearby), that Ashland prides itself upon being genuinely friendly to strangers. One writer describes it as "a town that reminds you of the happy childhood you didn't have." Several good restaurants and one great one are within walking distance. It is becoming an arts community, with galleries, shops, and theater - live and film - nearby. Most people don't want to leave.
  • The owner welcomed us with beautiful flowers from the garden and provided highlights about Ashland and the neighborhood. The cottage was cozy, quaint, and quiet. The bed was so comfortable! We enjoyed walks in the neighborhood and into Ashland. The fenced in backyard was a nice place to let our dog play while we enjoyed the back porch.

  • Thank you Phyllis. I loved Ashland, VA and your beautiful cottage. Such peace and relaxation! This is a perfect getaway if you need to unwind, de-stress or just treat yourself to an enjoyable relaxing vacation. The town of Ashland has charm, beauty and sophistication. I had read about the writer's cottage a few years ago and have always wanted to stay there. It was so wonderful to finally make my way there and take some creative time for myself. I enjoyed walking in the neighborhood, writing, and practicing yoga in the backyard under the trees. Also, the front porch has a lovely setting area where you can just contemplate life or enjoy a good book and the serenity of the surroundings. I especially loved the kitchen area. There were gorgeous fresh cut flowers above the sink and all of the amenities you could need without having to leave home. Exquisite Stay. Highly recommend.

The house and space is beautiful, he helped us find it without issue and was welcoming and warm. Convenient to I-95, the Cottage at Walnut Shade provides fully furnished privacy and a chance to escape among the farm fields and history of Hanover county. Whether you’re a biker, hiker, history nut, beer fanatic, theatre lover or just want a place to call your own for the weekend, you may be surprised to find it all in the town of Ashland and surrounding Hanover county.
The Cottage is surrounded by farm fields and forests, giving you complete privacy from the hustle and bustle of life. Rural Hanover has many hidden attractions. Check out the Old Jail next to the Hanover Courthouse, or wander around the Hanover Tavern across the street, where Patrick Henry stayed while he was arguing cases. Travel to the other side of Ashland to visit his home Scotchtown, and maybe even venture further west to the small town of Montpelier. Poor Farm Park, behind Patrick Henry High School, is home to miles of trails for hiking and biking. Or simply just wander around downtown Ashland, checking out the restaurants, markets and independently-owned stores, and be sure to take a stroll through Randolph Macon’s beautiful campus.
  • We enjoyed our stay! It’s a clean, comfy place with most everything you need!

    Jennifer2018-12-30T00:00:00Z
  • Perfect location for the Kings Dominion trip (14 minutes from the park). The place had everything we needed. The best part was the farm it sits on, the girls could go out and play and had the best time running and searching and seeing everything in the area. I would recommend it to anyone. I’ll definitely be back.

  • Martha was an amazing host. She always made sure we have everything we needed throughout our long stay. She even made sure we didn't lose power in a storm that rolled through. The house was spotless and had so many wonderful touches. The information book described the area and thing to do, and seeing dozens of deer, rabbits and beavers was spectaticly surprise. The property is amazing and peaceful. We loved our stay and hope to stay again. Even try some of the recommendations we didn't get a chance to try. Thank you Martha, you and your place are wonderful!

  • The cottage is the perfect getaway spot, very private and nestled among gorgeous walnut trees that provide wonderful shade from the Virginia sun. It is such a sweet and cozy house with a really neat kitchen where you can sit at a little breakfast bar or kitchen table. I found it to be clean, well supplied and so nicely decorated. I loved the book that Martha Ellen made showing maps of the land and a loop to hike. I sat on the front porch and felt the cares of the world fade away! I will definitely be back.

Located on "Fraternity/Sorority Row" on the Randolph-Macon College campus. A quaint Edwardian Era home; built in 1904, and the floors squeak. House listed in the Ashland Historic District, Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places. Amenities reflect a more gracious period. The host lives in a separate wing, and is always available for help and information. Cats stay in confined room.
Ashland is called the Center of the Universe, and this house is located only a stones throw from the most important place in the Center of the Universe: Randolph-Macon College. There is nothing modern about the house, but it is well lived in and exudes the feeling of years ago. A quiet, relaxing journey back in time. Upstairs 4 bedrooms & 2 full bathrooms. Bedrooms 1,2 & 3 have Xfinity TV service. Downstairs is a formal dinning room, parlor, library, half bath, full kitchen with adjoining Florida room. Swimming pool & patio. Historic Town of Ashland and Hanover County have many quaint and interesting places to visit. A walk down our lovely sidewalks past picturesque old commercial buildings and beautifully maintained homes reminds us of the rich traditions of our past. There are wonderful restaurants, country inns, bed and breakfasts, and shops of all kinds and a wealth of history in both the Town of Ashland and Hanover County. And the City of Richmond is only a 15 minutes highway trip and Williamsburg and Charlottesville are only 45 minutes away.
The College Avenue neighborhood has elegant older houses circa late 1800's and early 1900's. There are flowers and beautiful trees and shrubbery everywhere.
  • Very nice historical home

  • Mr. Nelson was a wonderful host. He made us feel welcomed and it was a pleasure to stay there.

    Kimberly2017-06-30T00:00:00Z
  • Great value- brought 4 to sleep comfortably for two nights. Plenty of room and parking. Nelson greeted us upon arrival and had snacks, coffee, and water ready for us at all times. He went out of his way to answer questions and made it a point to make sure we had everything. We were only there to sleep and we're gone most of the day. The only issue we had was the cat that was secluded. Never saw it, but made noises throughout the night. Kept us awake for bits, but that was more our fault. I should have thought about this possibility before booking. We would stay again but would bring earplugs. Thanks for the hospitality Nelson!

  • Clean spacious and hospitality was exceptional

    Karen2019-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • Such a nice homey feel. Soft fluffy towels. Snacks, water and coffee provided. There are cats on the premise but we never saw them.

  • V Nelson’s home is so spacious, and he was a lovely and accommodating host. Not many people would be ok with a family of six (4 kids!) running all over the place, but it didn’t faze him. We loved the pool, we were grateful for the coffee and snacks he provided, and we enjoyed being able to spread out and have a good night’s rest in his comfy bedrooms. High speed Internet and plenty of towels also a big plus! Thank you, V Nelson!

  • Had a great stay at Nelson’s place. He is very welcoming and sweet. Anything we needed he had for us. Everything was clean and the antiques were beatiful. I even had a dinner party and put up some decorations, he didn’t mind at all.

The Tinder Guest House is an 8 room unit with three bedrooms (queen beds) and 2 full baths. Includes a game room (foosball and shuffleboard), a reading room with a small library and an eating nook. The eating nook has a microwave, mini-refrig., a keurig coffee machine, a bagel toaster and a blender. Breakfast is included. Southern Hospitality at its best!
The Tinder Guest House is located in an historic building in downtown Ashland. It is filled with antiques and unique items, but has all the modern conveniences. Located on the second floor, the first floor features a craft brewery. Come and experience all that the Center of the Universe has to offer.
Ashland is a quiet town and is reminiscent of earlier times. Think Petticoat Junction and a Mayberry mix. People are friendly and there are a lot of town events: Ashland Street Parties four times a year, 4th of July Parade and Festivities, Light up the Tracks in December and more! Our historic 1930 era theatre has reopened and features current movies, classics, concerts and more! (And it is a block from the Guesthouse)
  • This was one of the most interesting places I’ve stayed so far while traveling for work. Host was great, and I had a blast walking to the local bar/restaurants because it was so easy! Would recommend staying here any time you’re visiting/working in Richmond.

  • We had a wonderful stay at Sharons " Tinder Guest House" when attending graduation at Randolph-Macon College. Sharon met us upon arrival, eventhough we were hours delayed. She surprised us every morning with new deliciuos breakfast dishes. The house is nice and clean and has a great personality from times gone by and easily holds 7 people. Sharon was a wonderful host that really cares about her guests. We definitely recommend this place and will be happy to return.

    Anna2016-05-30T00:00:00Z
  • As advertised, we enjoyed our stay.

    Jeffrey2018-08-23T00:00:00Z
  • Sharon goes out of her way to provide all the amenities you can think of: homemade breakfasts, juice, water, homemade cookies, fruit, etc. Her place is very clean and centrally located near restaurants and cute shops. The beds are very comfortable and provide plenty of space for families. I would caution those with younger children that there is a bar directly underneath the apartment, which generated a lot of noise at night. It closes at 10pm on the weekend, but when you are trying to get kids to bed well before that time, it is an annoyance.

    Charissa2017-03-19T00:00:00Z
  • We had a great time staying at Sharon's Tinder Guest House. She is a fantastic host and can't wait to stay again. The guest house is extremely clean and in the best location. It is the perfect place to stay Ashland!

  • Sharon is absolutely incredible. We booked her home for our wedding weekend to stay at and use to get ready with the bridal party since we were getting married nearby at the Hanover Arts and Activities Center. Sharon was so sweet, responsive and the best hostess. The Tinder Guest House is so beautiful, clean, spacious and the entire bridal party enjoyed celebrating with us at the house. Sharon made sure we had everything we needed and went out of her way to make sure we had breakfast food, snacks (delicious muffins and quiche!!) and was so flexible on check in/out times. Ashland is the cutest town and we loved every moment of our stay. Sharon clearly takes great pride in the home and made sure every detail was perfect. I would recommend her as a hostess and the Tinder Guest House to anyone who would like a relaxing weekend getaway. We will definitely be back!!

    Annelise2016-10-03T00:00:00Z
  • We absolutely loved the train theme of the home. It was beautifully decorated, yet comfortable enough to accommodate my young children. The home is very spacious, with plenty of space for separating those who wanted to sleep in, from the early risers. Sharon was a lovely person--so kind and helpful. She made each of us feel so comfortable. We will definitely be staying here again!

  • I can’t say enough about this special place and host. We came with another couple who also had an rmc freshman. It was walking distance to the football game and restaurants, plenty of room for our families and a place our freshman enjoyed hanging out in with the game room. Plenty of room for visitors to drop in and just a perfect location. The host Sharon took it to a whole new level with her amazing breakfasts she would bring in for all of us to enjoy. There was plenty of room for us all to be comfortable. Can’t wait to come again!

  • A lovely and cozy dwelling. Very clean and pleasant. Melissa is a warm host. She gave me delicious tomatoes from her garden. Our dogs romped as she showed me around. Ashland is a beautiful, walkable town.

  • A gem. Private, very comfortable, lots of space and light. Very appealing space, with large private living room in addition to bedroom. Lots of windows and many nice touches. Very peaceful. Terrific location, walking distance to great restaurants. Melissa was a terrific host. Can’t recommend highly enough.

  • The suite is a lovely place to stay. It is quite and cozy. There is plenty of bedroom space and common living space. The bathroom is unique, but that’s why we love AirBnBs. It is always a new and different experience!

  • Melissa's Place is very unique and a great location in Ashland. We loved the exposed brick and wood in the space. We were there in fall but we imagine the garden is amazing when it's in full bloom. There is a small kitchenette with a mini-frigde and microwave. There are also utensils, glasses, etc. Very close to downtown Ashland with several small restaurants and cafes. There are grocery stores and other retail less than 2 miles away. We had a great experience and plan to visit again if we are in the area.

  • Gorgeous home in the country. A little hard to find at night! My room felt like I was in my own king size master bedroom! It was huge with my own bathroom and all. Very clean. Mitch was extremely accommodating for me and all the food I had to buy for my job. Great host!

Our family farm has too many empty spaces to love, inside and out. Help us fill them with new friends. Must love dogs!
Our home is tucked at the end of a safe, private drive with plenty of parking. The entire second floor is available for guests (4 large, cozy bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a coffee bar.) None of our pets go upstairs, but yours are welcome. You are also welcome to use the main kitchen, dining tables, den/TV, and all the peaceful porches. In the basement you'll find ping-pong, pool table, arts/crafts supplies, a den area with a TV/movies, plus a yoga room with a Peloton and light workout equipment. • These ladies are simply the best. So warm and inviting- the house and decor are absolutely incredible... and the dogs were just as sweet as could be!! We absolutely enjoyed our stay and recommend them 100%!

  • Wendy and Hallies place is amazing...this was my second time to visit and I will return. You won’t be disappointed in anyway. They are AirBNB and what you would hope to experience. Don’t miss staying here!

    Paul2019-06-25T00:00:00Z
  • This is the place where one can blend together with nature. Wendy and Hallie's house was absolutely beautiful, clean, spacious, and all the other synonyms for good. There were lots of activities for us to do. There's the pool, the TV and the collection of DVDs, a billiard, and a ping pong table. Did I mention about their cute and adorable pets? On top of everything, the hospitality and kindness these ladies gave us was very heartwarming. I would definitely come back again. <3

  • Independence is a must do AirBnb for any travelers in the Richmond area. Great House, even better Hosts, and friendly pets found in a peaceful setting that will allow you to relax.

    Ronnie2019-07-19T00:00:00Z
  • Independence is a wonderful place! Wendy and Jess were quick to respond, whether they the app or in person...then gone and out of your way to enjoy their home. But honestly, the fact we got to hang out and play with the 4-legged babies (both the dogs and the horses) was completely worth it by itself! It is definitely one to revisit the next time we’re in the area! Thank you so much!

    Thomas2019-09-08T00:00:00Z
  • Absolutely amazing place! It's hard to believe this little slice of heave is only 20 minutes from Richmond! Amazing pool and doggos! Definitely feels like you are a part of a super nice family and I can't thank Wendy enough for her hospitality and flexibility when it came to my group!
