Bioparc Fuengirola has been around for a while. Originally built as a Zoo in the 1970's, it was not a pleasant place for the animals. In 1998, Rain Forest took over the zoo and set out to completely redesign and expand the zoo aiming to create the latest “full-immersion zoo” concept recreating the tropical forests of Madagascar, Equatorial Africa and Southeast Asia. The new Fuengirola Zoo was opened in 2001 and set new standards for other zoos in Europe to follow. It is now called the Bioparc Fuengirola and the living standards for animals are very high. The Bioparc is now flourishing, with over 140 species represented, and a total of over 1,300 individual animals, seemingly happy in their newly created environments. The variety of animals is huge including birds, mammals including the gorilla, hippopotamus, leopard and tiger, reptiles including the crocodile and python and fish species. The Biopark aims not only to fascinate but also to teach and provides educational tours for adults and children. There is of course a restaurant on site and a huge playground next door to keep the young ones entertained. Also in the months of July and August, the Bioparc stays open till midnight allowing people to explore the park and its residents at night time, the perfect way to end an evening.

Selwo Marina is a small (1.67 hectares) marine park located in Benalmádena, Spain. The park has 4 areas; 'Antillas', 'Las Hondonada', 'Amazonia' and 'Isla de Hielo'. 'Antillas' is where the dolphin and sea lion pools are located. There are 4 large pools, three of which are home to their three bottlenose dolphins, and the last used for interactive programmes such as Swim With a Sea Lion. The main large pool (The 'Show Pool') is used by both the dolphins and sea lions during shows. 'Las Hondonada' is the area in which the Bird and Snake Shows take place. 'Amazonia' is a small indoor area containing tank of snakes, lizards, fish, caimans and a collection of others.

The journey takes about 12 minutes out of Benalmádena and continues through Monte Calamorro. The cable car in Benalmádena is a popular attraction that offers stunning panoramic views of the Costa del Sol coastline and the surrounding areas. Description: The Benalmádena cable car takes visitors on a scenic journey to the top of Mount Calamorro. As you soar above the picturesque landscapes, you can admire the sparkling Mediterranean Sea, the lush greenery of the mountains, and even catch glimpses of Gibraltar and the Moroccan coastline on clear days. At the summit, you'll find various amenities, including a restaurant, hiking trails, a bird of prey exhibition, and even a small zoo. Getting There: By Car: If you have a rental car or your own vehicle, you can easily reach the Benalmádena cable car by following the signs to Tivoli World theme park. The cable car base station is located near the entrance of Tivoli World, and there is ample parking available. By Public Transportation: If you prefer to use public transportation, you can take a bus to Benalmádena Pueblo, which is the town's old village area. From there, you can either take a taxi or walk for approximately 20 minutes to reach the cable car base station. The buses in the area are frequent and well-connected. Once you arrive at the cable car base station, you can purchase your tickets at the ticket office or you can buy online. Remember to check the operating hours of the cable car in advance, as they may vary depending on the season and weather.

Cable Car The Benalmadena Cable Car was opened in 2003 and became one of the main tourist attractions on the Costa del Sol. The modern Telecabina (or Teleférico) is part of the Selwo Adventure Parks group, which also has Selwo Aventura in Estepona and Selwo Marina in Benalmádena port. The Telecabina takes you on an amazing 15-minute journey in a four-person cable car right up to the highest point on the Málaga coast at an altitude of almost 800m above sea level. From this superb vantage point, you not only have the most magnificent views of the Costa del Sol, but also the awesome panoramic vistas of the Sierra Nevada mountains (white with snow in the winter months), the Guadalhorce Valley and on a clear day you can see Gibraltar and the coast of Africa. The first time I took a trip in the Telecabina, I couldn't understand why they asked if I wanted a single or return ticket! I thought they were joking. Was I never coming back down again? I soon realized that many people opt to walk down on the special footpath and others even take mountain bikes in the cabin and cycle down. A significant number of annual season tickets are sold to keen cyclists who use the Telecabina for the thrill of cycling back down the mountain. If you take your bike, you have the cabin exclusively for just you and your bike for the price of a one-way ticket. Once at the top, there are clearly marked signs leading to specific viewpoints: Cima Calamorro (the Calamorro Mountain Peak) and Sur (south) and Oeste (west). At the summit, you can take a donkey ride through the beautiful natural surroundings. The donkeys are ready and waiting for cable car passengers. As well as a donkey ride, included in the price you can also see an exhibition of fine Spanish dressage horses. You can also see a demonstration on how the birds of prey live alongside humans and watch the speed and feeding habits of a peregrine falcon or the majestic flight of the eagle. So successful is the bird of prey sanctuary on the Calamorro Mountaintop that four rare Royal Owl chicks were successfully bred there recently, news that hit the local papers. There are more than sixty birds of different species, including vultures, royal eagles, peregrine falcons and white-headed vultures as well as the Royal Owls. All of this makes the cable car ride exciting, educational and enjoyable for the whole family. To find the Telecabina, go into Arroyo de la Miel village and follow the signs for Tivoli World. Playa Burriana is Nerja’s most famous beach and one of the best places in the area for eating directly by the sea. The beachfront promenade is lined with restaurants, chiringuitos (beach bars), ice cream spots, and cafés where you can sit with your feet almost in the sand. It is especially popular for fresh seafood, paella, grilled sardines, and sunset dinners. Ayo’ and El Barco are two of our favorite places to eat on Burriana Beach. Perfect for relaxed seaside lunches, sunset drinks, and long evenings by the Mediterranean. Ayo’ is famous for its giant paellas cooked outdoors over open fire, while El Barco is a longtime beach favorite for seafood, Mediterranean dishes, and people-watching along the promenade. Both also offer wooden sun loungers for rent on the beach, but they are very popular and usually need to be reserved several days in advance, especially in summer. We recommend stopping by early in your stay to make a reservation. If these are fully booked, there are many other places along Burriana Beach where loungers can also be rented.

Burriana beach is Nerja's main Blue Flag beach with everything you need to pass the whole day relaxing, eating, swimming and sunbathing. La Cañada Shopping centre in Marbella is the largest shopping centre on the Costa del Sol. Home to over 150 shops, La Cañada caters to everyone's personal shopping needs. Situated on the Marbella bypass, this vast establishment cannot be missed. Offering free, ample parking as well as regular buses and two taxi ranks, La Cañada makes shopping less stressful and more rewarding. In addition to the numerous shops La Cañada also has many restaurants. Children's clothes and toys can be found in Chicco, Mayoral, Okaidi, Caribu, Imaginarium and the Alcampo supermarket. La Cañada's furniture and household shops are Casa, Zara Home, Habitat, Imperial, Textile, Natuzzi, Natura Selection and Latelier. Cabopino Beach, the easternmost of Marbella, is partly nudist: in fact, it is the only naturist beach in the municipality. It is divided into two areas: the one closest to the marina is not nudist, and here you will find beach bars, sun loungers, showers and all the facilities of a normal and ordinary urban beach, while the western area of the beach, towards Elviria, is dedicated to naturism. There are no infrastructures here, and the area is surrounded by the dunes and pine trees of the Artola protected natural area.

Cabopino is a lovely place to go visit great beach but limited parking nice beach bars and restaurants in the port and a few good bars there too to chill and have a drink or two before a meal. We have been going to this area for years and it never disappoints not rammed with people but enough to get a great atmosphere.

Our recommendation is not Porto Banús but the Ferry Banus Marbella. Porto Banús is worth a visit – it’s all about glitter and glamour, with luxury yachts, cars, restaurants, and bars. We’ve had guests who came especially for that atmosphere and loved going out there. For us, it’s fun to have a look, but we personally enjoy the old town of Marbella more – and above all, the relaxed vibe of Estepona. One outing we can really recommend, especially as a budget-friendly option, is the Banús–Marbella Ferry: a catamaran that takes you from Puerto Banús to Marbella’s old town. It’s a super fun trip – our kids loved lying in the nets at the front, getting splashed by the waves. The ride takes about 20 minutes, and the last ferry back leaves at 7:15 pm. A perfect plan is to go in the morning, spend the day exploring Marbella’s old town, and return in the evening – or the other way around.

The Artola Dunes were declared a Natural Monument in 2003 because of their significant natural value with an intact ecosystem and varied biodiversity. This dune environment is 20,000 m² and even today testifies to how the natural coastline of Marbella looked not many years ago. This privileged region has three types of dunes. At the beachfront the dunes are mobile and because of their rippled surfaces can easily be spotted. The second line forms a natural barrier with inactive but mobile dunes, covered with shrub vegetation and by indigenous flora of great interest. Farthest from the sea are inactive, fossil dunes, with a narrow band of dense Stone Pine (Pinus pinea) as well as common shrubs such as Juniper (Juniperus sabina supsc. turbinata), Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus) and wild Olive tree (Olea europaea), typical species in the Mediterranean area which provide shelter and food for birds and small animals as well as for the typical Mediterranean scrub. The interesting dune vegetation includes specific dune species such as European Beachgrass (Ammophilia arenaria) and Sea Holly (Eryngium maritimum). There are clumps of Bitter Chamomile (Helichrysum stoechas) and a myriad of wild flora which varies from season to season. The Sea Daffodil (Pancratium maritimum) blooms in all its glory between the most dry months: July and September. Pedestrian walkways guarantee the total protection of the area, protecting it from constant trampling by members of the public thus allowing the natural development of the native flora. The tower known as La Torre de los Ladrones at the edge of Cabopino Harbour is 16 m high and was formally used as a military watchtower. Its origin seems to date back to Roman times and it was rebuilt over the centuries by both Arabs and Christians. This beacon has been declared of Cultural Interest and is kept in good condition.

Things you can do in Marbella. Mainly there are several things to do: 1. Walking through the old town, with its Plaza de los Naranjos, Iglesia de la Encarnacion, Cuesta de la Virgen Street, Calle del Peral, when the sunset is especially nice for a dinner at many of the restaurants along this area and visit shops. 2. Walking around Puerto Banus, especially nice in the morning where all the most exclusive shops are concentrated (jewelry, clothing, accessories, restaurants),yachts, luxury cars. In the same area is the shopping center "Marina Banus" and "El Corte Ingles". 3. Walk the promenade in the Golden Mile, from the Puente Romano or from the Marbella Club Hotel, walking towards Puerto Banus or Marbella old town, here we find one of the most beautiful promenades and exclusive of all the coast. It is highly advisable to do this either in the morning or afternoon. Visit the gardens of the Hotel Marbella Club, you can park in front of the hotel across the road and from there walk to reach the pier on the beach, in the promenade many of the most exclusive mansions in Marbella . Other alternatives: Visit the Virginia urbanization. In the seventies this development was built with the idea of becoming a haven of calm and relaxation in the bustling Marbella. It is a magical and intimate place where every square or street transports you to the most idyllic Andalusian village. The set was designed by the Spanish architect Juan Manuel Figueras, now deceased, and consists of 60 houses, all different from one another, they form a community owned eclectic and bohemian neighbors who care for and preserve the beauty of this corner. Nerja is a short day trip from Ca'Dario if you want to visit the larger caves, las Cuevas de Nerja. The small town itself is all about whitewashed houses, the impressive viewpoint Balcon de Europa and the beautiful Burriana beach which has some cool rock cliffs of different heights to jump off from. There is a number of good Paella and tapas restaurants on the beach for your lunch or dinner. Take the stand up paddle and explore the crystal clear waters beyond Burriana Beach, spot lots of sealife and even a small water fall.

Tips on places to visit and things to do: Nerja: A large, small town with cozy lanes, over 500 restaurants, bars and shops. Balon de Europa is a must. On the east side of Nerja is the large Burriana beach with a bunch of restaurants. Frigiliana: The infamous moorish village just above Nerja. Check out the history by walking around the old part of the village, the one at the top. Here you can also hike a bit up above the village. Park in the middle of the town The nothern part is the old, nice part. El Acebuchal: ’The forgotten village’, A bit challenging drive. But so worth the trip. Contine the road after Frigiliana! The restaurant has local, Spanish, organic food. Cuevas de Nerja: A unique stalactite cave discovered in the 50’s. Easy to park. Your can walk around yourself. Takes about 1/2 if you are not a geologist etc. Rio Chillar: Hike to the waterfalls - follow the map and park as close as you can. Bring plenty of lunch, water and energy bars etc. A fairly long hike about 4 hours to the waterfalls and back. You can turn around when it suits you. Hike up above our apartment - a shorter activity is to ”just” hike up above our area. Past the construction site you’ll quickly get a sunning view over the sea. Aim at the satellite masts and go as far as you can. Torrox Costa: More local, Spanish. There is a boardwalk and simpler lunch restaurants. Sierra Nevada: Takes 1,5 hours to drive. Check the weather so it doesn’t snow etc! Then the last half hour is very steep. So choose a sunny day! Drive straight into the large car park you come to when you arrive. Then you come up in the small village and there iare ski rental everywhere and the ski pass kiosk on the town square. A bit sparse with restaurants in the slopes, but there are some. Granada & Alhambra: - An hours drive from us. The Alhambra is a very beautiful Moorish castle with a garden and a lot of history. Granada a big, intensive city. Can be very hot in summer/cold in winter. Malaga: Large, but cozy city. Old town is very nice. Down at the marina there is a nice with boardwalk. The Picasso Museum a beautiful museum with fine exhibitions. Center Pompidou has its only branch in Malaga. El Corte Ingles is located in the city. Fine top floor luxury food packaging and champagne bar etc. Shopping: If you want to shop close by there is a large shopping center right near Baviera Golf. It’s called El Ingenio at Velez Malaga (not Malaga) about 10 minutes from us. Nerja has lots of shops but they are fairly ’tourist:y’. There are no big chains or brands that have established themselves in Nerja. There is a small but good sports shop behind the church.

Up in the mountains of Malaga province lies the magnificent town of Ronda, split down the centre by a 100m gorge, known as ‘El Tajo’ that separates the medieval old part of the town from the 18th century part. Ronda is 60km away from Marbella and is very popular amongst day-trippers from the Costa del Sol reputed to be Hemingway’s favourite city in Spain. The gorge is spanned by three bridges ‘The Roman Bridge’, ‘The Old Bridge’ and ‘The New Bridge.’ The most impressive of the three is ‘The New Bridge,’ an elaborate stone structure standing 120 metres above the canyon floor. Designed by the famous architect Aldehuela, it was finally completed in 1793 having taken 40 years and many lives to build. You can take a tour bus to the bottom of the gorge to capture the classic Ronda picture for yourself. Crossing over to the modern Ronda, you will come to the Parador; a walkway that runs along the river gorge and offers visitors superb views of the river Guadalevin below. If you follow the walkway round you will come to the Mirador where sightseers are surrounded by flower beds and look out onto the surrounding countryside, the perfect backdrop for a picnic. Behind the Mirador is the famous ‘Plaza de Toros’ bullring designed also by Aldehuela, which is the largest, oldest and most beautiful in Spain. It also has an in-house museum that tracks the history of bullfighting and some of its legendary matadors. There is also the partially intact ‘Arab Baths’ found below the city passing through the arch of Felipe V, that date back to the 13th and 14th Centuries. Another sight worth mentioning is The Mondragon Palace that is an exquisite mansion house with fabulous gardens, formerly the home of King Abomelik. This is a great place to settle in the shade and take in the City Hall. There are a number of fantastic restaurants in Ronda. Here are just a few to tempt you: Bar Faustino- which is a Tapas bar in the centre of the city that is non-stop but if you like the buzz the food is good and so is the atmosphere. If you're looking for more of a sit-down, relaxed meal there's the Tragabuches, which is the most renowned in the town, being one of the few Michelin starred restaurants in Andalucia and deservedly so. A beautiful town, Ronda is an ideal day-trip for those wanting to branch out from the glitz of Marbella and experience some real Spain. The journey up to Ronda takes just over an hour from Marbella and the road up meanders through the mountains with some spectacular scenery all along the way!

Ronda Mountaintop town in Malaga province that’s set above a deep gorge. The gorge (El Tajo) separates the city’s circa-15th-century new town from its old town, which dates to Moorish rule. A stone bridge called Puente Nuevo, spans the gorge, and there are stunning views from different view points. Churches, museum, bull ring, baths, and restaurants overlooking the stunning gorge. A 1 hour 10 mins hour drive from the villa, given winding roads, but really worthwhile.  Alternatively, take train from Algeciras La Linea to Ronda - saves on winding roads but takes longer (ar you need to drive to La Linea to catch the train) . The route up to Ronda is very picturesque, as the track on which the train runs was originally constructed in Victorian times and traverses picturesque rocky mountains en route to Ronda.

Butiplaya, also known as Butibamba Beach, is located at La Cala di Mijas. It is a large beach, ideal for relaxing during the day, and also a great place for the many parties that enliven its nightlife. The Butiplaya beach is usually quite crowded, especially since it is located in an urban area, but it is still worth a visit, because Cala de Mijas is one of the most beautiful towns on the entire Costa del Sol. Umbrellas, sunbeds and boats can be rented, and parking is usually available. Here you can also eat quickly in one of the chiringuitos next to the waterfront.

A walk along the boardwalk is a must and will take you directly into La Cala. A good 25 minute walk (Maxs Beach) so be prepared and wear comfortable shoes. In La Cala you have a beautiful village setting on the beach with ample restaurants, music, markets and activities for the smaller people. Tip! Drive down to the footbridge at Riveria/Miraflores and park and walk over from there and takes a good ten minutes off your walk. Enjoy its a lovely coastal walk and you will be ready for dinner!

What was once a sleepy little fisher’s village back in the sixties, has developed into one of the most popular tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol: Estepona. Holidays in Estepona offer that little something for everyone – a fabulous choice of tapas bars and restaurants; long stretches of clean beaches on which to work up a tan; a rocking nightlife and, last but certainly not least, plenty of fun activities for the kiddos. This town has its own special charm to it with its polka-dotted flowerpots and stunning murals to be admired all around the urban center. The Estepona gastronomy is yet another strong point, there are numerous restaurants in the port selling quality fresh fish caught that morning, as well as other restaurants and tapas bars in the centre. Other things to see and do within the town include the clock tower in the Plaza de las Flores, which was built by Henry V and dates back from the 15th Century. The narrow cobbled streets of the town wind up the side of hills overlooking Nerja and give stunning views back towards Nerja and the Mediterranean beyond. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the village where you can stop for a coffee or lunch plus small shops where you can browse artisan clothes, jewellery and even chocolate. Highly recommended.

Approximately 1 hour drive from Fuengirola, Frigiliana is undoubtedly one of the most charming white villages in Malaga. Awarded the 1st National Beautification Prize in 1982, its historic quarter has been a Historic-Artistic Site since 2014. The whitewashed walls, its narrow and winding streets, in a myriad of stairs that run through the Barribarto, are the Moorish heritage that the passage of time has left in the old town of Frigiliana, one of the best preserved in the province.

Frigiliana is a small village loctaded just 5 km North of Nerja. Small shops, a lot of resturants. A lovely place. Take the bus or taxi from Nerja. There is a lot of restaurants and bars.. But Bodega de Pepe, Plaza 45 or El Boquetillo are good once. The last one is owned by a previous chef for AC/DC and Guns n Roses. There is a AC/DC burger with Angus meat… The buss between Frigiliana and Nerja The bus leaves from the bus station in Nerja. 8-10 times a day. San Pedro de Alcántara Situated just 10 minutes drive east of the house, San Pedro is a local gem for several reasons, not least its burgeoning selection of restaurants, long stretch of beach, complete with promenade that runs as far as Marbella, but also for the BEST ice cream ever. San Pedro has a local market in the upper part of the town, on Thursday mornings, which can be fun to visit. There is a bike hire shop (Base bikes), and a lovely, recently renovated pedestrian shopping area, spotted with trendy cafes. Finally, for the youngest guests, there is an extensive play park built on the San Pedro Boulevard - the beautifully landscaped strip of land above the San Pedro tune (A-7). Benisty - recent find. San Pedro you will find what is probably the most typical Spanish town left on the Costa del Sol, kept very clean with a central shopping area, quiet parks and squares and beautiful gardens. Turn right off the main road to the Nueva Alcántara area and you reach the very long, newly constructed promenade and the long, wide beaches, where there are many new developments taking shape.

Up and coming area with an excellent promenade by the beach. The town itself has a recent addition of a raised walkway, which is close to the entrance to the main pedestrian street of Avenida Las Palmiras, which in turn leads you to the main square, which is dominated by the church (Parroquia San Pedro de Alcantara).
