The Carousel of Happiness is Nederland, Colorado's magical menagerie featuring 56 whimsical, hand-carved animals on a restored 1910 Looff carousel, turning to the music of a 1913 Wurlitzer band organ. Rides are now $3, or 10 for $25. Scott Harrison was a 19-year-old Marine Gunner serving in Vietnam where the gift of a music box and the image of a carousel in a mountain meadow calmed him. Many years later, after rescuing an abandoned carousel, he began carving what would become a whimsical menagerie. It took him a little over 26 years to hand-carve the 56 animals and a dedicated group of volunteers helped bring the carousel to life in the little mountain town west of Boulder. The fully-enclosed Carousel of Happiness turns to the music of a restored 1913 Wurlitzer Band Organ, and is home to a gift shop, storytelling booth and do-it-yourself puppet theater.

Only a five-minute walk from our location, do a mile walk or run around Wonderland Lake. The park trail also accesses the path that goes along Boulder's Rocky Mountain foothills, called the Flat Irons. Both trails are fairly flat, so they are good for both the young and old as well as more agile hikers.

This park has lots of fun terrain, a giant sandbox and water features (turned on only in late spring, summer and early fall). NCAR (The National Center for Atmospheric Research) is a wonderful place to visit. It's an iconic building in Boulder that you can see in the hills, but there are also many great hiking trails here. First do a quick visit to the NCAR building itself. They have self guided displays of the weather research done on site. This is also a wonderful place to do a hike. You can climb a peak here (Bear Peak/South Boulder Peak), Explore a small cave (Malary Cave), or even hike all the way to Chautauqua Park along the beautiful Mesa trail and walk down to the dining hall for a quick bite to eat. Great views of Boulder.

Where ever you are from, Celestial Seasonings tea is available worldwide, and you probably didn't know that they are located just 40 minutes from Denver in Boulder, Colorado. Chautauqua is a great place for a picnic and hike. It's very popular so parking can be hard to find on a sunny weekend. But don't give up! The Chautauqua Dining Hall has a very nice brunch with patio seating. There are over 25 hiking trails that can be accessed from Chautauqua. The Woods Quarry trail is lovely. The Boulder Res is a dazzlingly scenic spot close to town and a perfect place to spend a day out paddling, chillin' on the beach or sipping a cold beverage lakeside. Soak up the sun and views of the Flatirons while you SUP across hundreds of acres of lake. Boulder Paddleboard Rentals: The best part is you can rent a paddleboard right on-site from Rocky Mountain Paddleboard. (Don't plan to bring your own board unless you have scored one of the Reservoir's few permits, which tend to sell out each spring.) Classes: You can also take a lesson with a certified instructor at Rocky Mountain Paddleboard or sign up for a stand-up paddleboarding yoga class to get a new perspective of the Res while in downward dog. Reservoir Entry: The park entry fee is $12 per non-resident adult. Please note that while we love dogs in Boulder, they are not allowed at the Res from mid-May to Labor Day.

The town of Ned is one of a kind. Take a day trip, grab lunch, enjoy the views of Canyon on the way and appreciate this adorable little mountain town. It’s one of my favorites! Breweries, mineral gem shop, ice cream, restaurants and cute shops. Hit the Carousel of Happiness, one of very few Loof Carousels still standing today. Want more scenic driving? Head out on Peak to Peak, maybe hit Brainard Lake, and take a different route back.

Lyons is a charming town about a 10 minutes drive away. Main Street features restaurants, cafes, a brewery, a distillery, and some shopping. Lyons is also home to the St. Vrain Creek, Planet Bluegrass, and LaVern M. Johnson Park. You can hike, swim, tube, fish, and listen to world-renowned bluegrass artists here! There are also some amazing hiking spots! Check out Heil Valley Ranch, Steamboat Mountain, and Button Rock Trailhead. I always make a stop in Lyons on my way to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Grab coffee and walk around town. You will literally run into live music somewhere as small as it is... There are several unique art installments all along the streets of downtown Lyons. Great restaurants and specialty gift shops. Around Christmas it is well lit and decorated in our little town and we have an excellent Christmas parade with very large trees drenched in lights and local businesses participating.

Downtown boulder is a 35 minutes drive northwest from the house. While it doesn't have buildings over 5 stories, its a very large town with a lot to do. The pedestrian only Pearl Street forms the center of Boulder with about 10 block packed with cafes, restaurants, bars & shopping. It does have places that stay open to 2 am due to the CU Boulder university scene. Plus a lot of live music venues like the famous Boulder Theater or Chautauqua outdoor music venues in the summer. There are a ton of hikes around boulder. I recommend downloading the "Hiking Project" or "Trailforks" apps on your phone to see local hikes & ratings.

Downtown Boulder is full of wonderful shops and great food but beware parking can be difficult and lodging ranges $200-$500/night! We love to eat at Rosetta Hall and Avanti, 2 fun new food halls with something for everyone from meat lovers to vegans and great deserts. We love to walk or bike along the Boulder Creek path or picnic and splash around on a hot day. We love to shop, special local gifts can be found at our favorite, Rebecca's Herbal Apothecary, don't miss her lip gloss and facial oils. Bliss Gifts is also wonderful. Most popular trailhead in Boulder. Stop at the ranger station here for hiking information, and head up into the hillside to hike among the flatirons. Woods Quarry is a good choice for a short hike with views above the city. Royal Arch is another, more strenuous option. Beware parking restrictions on weekends, free parking is available if you park a few blocks south, in the neighborhood. Shuttle bus is another option, check online for pickup locations and times.
