“We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Brookside; The room was comfortable and clean, the location was close to Bayfield and the Madeline Island ferry landing. Jon gave us great tips on what to do in the area, we especially enjoyed hiking on the Landmark trail from Meyer's Beach to the Sea Caves. The outdoor firepit was an added bonus and Jon also provided a charcoal grill for our private use and also had bikes available for his renters. We love the outdoors and this place suited us great.”
Applegate Cottage is an adorable cottage right on Highway 13 in Herbster, WI - the gateway to the abundant orchards and wineries of Bayfield, and the Apostle Islands - all just half an hour away. A very short walk to beautiful Lake Superior, located on the Lake Superior Circle Tour. Enjoy kayaking, or explore the sea/ice caves. One hour from the infamous Birkie Trail. There is absolutely no better place to enjoy any season of the year!
“Holly was great with communication from my initial inquiries prior to booking all the way until check-out. As soon as you pull into the driveway you are greeted by an inviting cottage with a screened in second story porch, front deck patio area where you can enjoy the clean outdoor air or a table with a chair you can relax with your morning coffee. When you enter the cottage you walk into an open family room with plenty of natural light, a sitting area, and a reading area under the steps with a fainting couch or rocker to relax or play on the game table next to the electric fireplace. There is a large selection of books to pick from and enjoy. The kitchen is open to the living room and offers a long homemade wooden table for meals or playing games. The kitchen is stocked with coffee and snacks, which are nice to wake up to every morning. The full downstairs bathroom and washer and dryer are also nice to have. Upstairs are two bedrooms that are separated by a door. There is also another large sized full bathroom upstairs that is separated from one of the bedrooms by a sliding barn door. The decor is very updated, stylish and well kept. The area is great as you are a short walk from Lake Superior and the nice and quiet beach. There is a cool antique store and good restaurant just down the road. You are between Port Wing and Cornucopia. Port Wing is seven miles west and Cornucopia is eight miles to the east, which also has some cool businesses. Apostle Islands are also very close. I highly recommend this hidden gem.”
Explore thousands of acres of the Bayfield County Forest and enjoy endless miles of exceptionally maintained non-motorized recreational trails. The yurt has direct access to CAMBA mountain bike trails and Mt. Ashwabay ski trails. The landscape is also spectacular. Take in the panoramic views of Lake Superior and the Onion River valley. This is a rustic, minimally maintained yurt set in the middle of the county forest, so come prepared to relax, unwind and explore the wonders of the north woods.
“Where do I begin to tell you about the amazing experience I had? Expect to get your work in first of all, because hiking uphill to the Yurt for over half a mile one way is definitely difficult, especially if you make multiple trips to the car. It’s a beautiful hike though. You will share the area with mountain bikers, but I only heard them a couple times during the day. Beyond that, you have the area all to yourself, and maybe some forest critters. There are plenty of signs for the mountain bikers to stay on their paths. Everything you need to start a fire is there, do not bring accelerants. There is an iron grill top that you can swivel into place to conveniently cool what you need, bring an iron pan with! Everything is exactly as you would expect, but that’s the beauty of it. Everything is so simple, and there was nothing difficult about living up there for a few days. The fire stove was easy to manage, the rules are simple, and the isolation from other people is apparent. The view is second to none. You think before renting that the view cannot possibly be that amazing, but you’ll be wrong. Make no mistake, the view does NOT get old. Whether you’re watching people out on Lake Superior, watching Ashland, seeing storms pass by, or just watching the wind dance through the trees, you won’t get bored. Turn on some Colter Wall, crack open a beer, and just relax. I don’t know what kind of bird it was, but it was terrifyingly loud, and landed on the yurt at 4:30am two of the three nights. It didn’t bug me, but was definitely the Bayfield County wake up call we all secretly desire. I spoke with Jason, the Air BnB coordinator, on the phone and through messages. He was quite responsive and went the extra mile to try to let me check in early. Greatly appreciated. Keep in mind, this was all during COVID, and they had cleaning supplies to wipe down and sanitize surfaces. Also, everything I said above is subject to change after tourism in the area kicks back up. I don’t expect much will change, as really the locals and moderate tourists likely know the road itself at all. It is a 2 mile drive on Whiting to get there, so you are definitely secluded. Thanks Bayfield County.”
