  We had a perfect time at the Waipi'o Hostel. This is a great place in a great location far away from all of the Resorts with a true local Hawaiian feel. Rustic and Warm, it feels like you're staying over at a friends house. The outdoor grill and eating area is ideal for warm evenings and works well even with a little rain shower.   The location is well situated next to the beautiful Waipio valley. You CAN leave your car at the B&B and hike there. The room is simple, but nicely decorated. Steve and Ron who welcomed us before the Steve's arrival were very friendly and helpful. Good value for the price.

  A view of the ocean from the living-room window! This place is awesome! Very homey place, VERY comfy bed, plus a quiet, clean bedroom with good light-shading so you can sleep in! Steve and the gang are informative, helpful and accommodating.

  If we had known it was this great, we would have stayed longer! Everything was perfect. The ocean view, the fresh bananas from the yard, the macadamia nuts, the bed was so comfortable, and the room was quiet. We were able to BBQ some food that we picked up along the way and sat out in the warm night and enjoyed our first dinner in Hawaii. Steve was an excellent host and stopped by to make sure we were comfortable. Thank you for having us, we will be back!

  My party of 5 had last minute travel plans and Steve was able to accommodate us in the old plantation house that his grandparents owned. It is a wonderful house and he was very helpful. We appreciated the last minute booking and would certainly stay here again. I would absolutely recommend him as a host.

  Staying at Steve's was a great pleasure. Steve was a very gracious and generous host, both before and during the stay. The location is idyllic, a couple of minutes from Waipi'o Vallaey. And the house - I felt like I was stepping into Gone With the Wind - v ery comfortable, and atmospheric. I appreciated the kitchen, having special dietary requirements. I noly eish I'd planned to stay more than 2 nights - it's only an hour to Hilo.

  What an interesting adventure to stay in sugarcane workers quarters. The common area was a bit old but well equipped, the bed was new and comfortable and the bathroom was the most unique one i have ever been in with the best shower on the Big Island - beat out the timeshares and hotels for a rain showerhead, hot water and spacious roomy 'open' shower. The convenient location helped with our circle route around the island too. Would stay there again!

  We needed to travel on a budget and the Waipi'o Hostel was terrific! The Hostel is set in one of the most beautiful and peaceful areas on the Big Island. We took walks to the Waipi'o Valley outlook and enjoyed the grounds and the ocean views. The home is a lovely example of the plantation era and today's rural Hawaii lifestyle. Steve and his hosts offered the true spirit of Aloha! We did not want to leave, and hope we can stay again someday. Mahalo friends!

  i stumbled on airbnb by accident and the Waipi'o Hostel was my first experience. Steve gave me directions, got the room ready, and answered questions. I'd planned to stay one night but stayed three. It was a good deal and I would definitely stay there again.

  Steve, the host, was very nice and the place itself was well kept and as described, but had a few issues: -our room and linens were very clean, but we found a few small bugs crawling on us while sitting on the couch in the living room. -there are 3 rooms in the hostel but it is not run like a hostel. There is no 'front desk' where you can ask questions, no security, no one enforcing any quiet hours, etc. The owner lives down the street and did tell us we could call if we needed... More »
