Commercial Banker
Greetings!
I am a native Alexandrian and have lived in the Old Town area for many years. As you may have read or heard, It's a great place to live. Especially since I have my parents, siblings and a ton of friends from high school and post college to support me locally.
Anyway, I purchased this contemporary and spacious 4 level townhouse a few years ago and decided to convert the first floor into a self contained apartment. It has separate entrances in the front and back foyers. Up until last fall, I've had the same tenant occupy the studio apartment below. Luckily for me, she was a great tenant, however, recently she got married and eventually transitioned out of the place.
While deciding what to do about the empty rental, I heard about AirBNB through a friend and reluctantly, decided to change my rental into a "bed and breakfast". Once I made the decision, I made some retrofits, painted the place, bought some furniture and had it modernly decorated to my taste.
Well a year and half or so later, I have to admit, so far I have not regretted my decision. I have met so many nice people coming from all parts of the world (Germany, England, Australia, Turkey, West Coast, East Coast and in between) and have built some solid friendships. It's been truly a pleasant surprise.
During the day, as stated in my profile, I'm a Commercial Banker for an International Bank based in the UK and work out of our DC Office. After work, when I'm not with friends or family, I'm quite involved with a few non for profits, as I sit on their boards or leadership committees. Work also requires me to attend numerous business and networking events. In addition, I'm also an avid cyclist, runner, and fitness freak. I say all this because, I'm not around much and when I am around, usually multi-tasking for a bit then in bed at a reasonable time.
As you may have read in my reviews thus far, I'm very accessible when needed but generally invisible most of the time. I'm also of a mind set of providing the best customer service to my AirBNB customers as a basic principle. I have set up my place downstairs to what I would expect if I were traveling.
Thank you in advance for your consideration.
Sincerely, Johnny
What a find! We had a great stay. We felt right at home and will definitely be back. It is a nice walk to Old Town which is a lovely and quaint town on the water. Also close to the metro for an easy trip into the district. Comfy and cozy diggs, wonderful location! Not to be missed.
November 2011This was our first stay in the Washington area and we found the accommodation to be clean and comfortable, close to the Old Alexandria restaurants and metro station for trips to DC. John welcomed us nicely and we found cheese, biscuits and a bottle of wine in the kitchen.
This was my second time staying at John's apartment and was definately as good as the first time. I hvae looked at a number of the rentals in Alexandria on Airbnb and can safely say that John's place is by far the best value fo money in Alexandrai/Old Town. This is a very clean, well equiped and fully furnished one bed apartment and John is a fantastic and helpful host. Could not be better and cannot recommend highly enough.
My stay at John's was excellent. The apartment is exactly as described - immaculately clean, private, quiet, & comfortable. The kitchen is well equipped & breakfast fixings are provided generously. Parking was right outside the condo in an enclosed parking area, so that, as a single woman in town for a conference, I was comfortable coming & going, even late at night. John was a perfect host, available if needed but offering respectful privacy otherwise. I would definitely return. Thank you,... More »
John was a fantastic host and the welcome breakfast items John provided were are a very nice and much appreciated touch. The apartment is fantastic, very well appointed and out-fitted and very good value for money. The location of the apartment is also excellent, just a few blocks from the Braddock road metro, and walking distance to Trader Joe's and King Street. I will be staying here again and cannot recommend John's apartment enough. Jamie
John was a wonderful host who went out of his way to ensure we enjoyed our stay. The apartment is in a great location, handy to the Metro and lots of restaurants. We would be happy to stay there next time we visit DC.
My son and I had a wonderful stay at John's place the second half of July. Both John and the apartment were perfect. The place is exactly as shown, lovely decor, great light and spotless. John was the ideal host, thinking of everything while giving us all the space in the world. Our flight was delayed the first night, and John was completely flexible. If you have any concerns about staying with someone you don't know, be assured that John is quiet, friendly, thoughtful, generous and a great... More »
This was our very first Airbnb stay and we are hooked. John's apartment is just lovely--very clean, well appointed, pleasantly decorated, ideally located--in a word "perfect." John responded to our e-mails and phone calls promptly and was very nice and easy to talk to in person whenever we saw him, which was not a lot because we were all very busy. We had a vehicle and felt very safe parking our car in the guest parking of John's apartment building. As far as getting around was concerned,... More »
Alexandria is the place to stay when you want to visit Washington DC and its surroundings, and according to our experience, John's apartment is the place to be in Alexandria. Very conveniently located, very near the metro and 15 minutes walk to the harbor and riverfront where we loved to dine at night or take the boat to Washington (45 minutes trip); Free parking at the rear of the house.. The apartment is very clean, very well decorated, fully equipped, with a lovely patio where we had... More »
John was a great host and I highly recommend his place to anyone who is traveling to DC or Alexandria. It was so nice to leave the bustle of DC and hop the subway for a short ride to Old Town Alexandria. We enjoyed the private patio and the bed was so-o comfortable. Traveling with children it works best for our family to have a kitchen and a separate sleeping area. Everything was spiffy, organized and homey. Thanks John, we hope to return again. Tim
Our family of 4 enjoyed the comfort of John's apartment for five days. I cannot have enough words to describe how great our stay was and the hospitality provided by John, but I'll give it a try. First, John is a model host. I kept close communication with him on the date of our arrival due to complications with our travel schedule and John made arrangements to receive us when we arrived. Secondly, John was kind enough to stock the refrigerator with several breakfast items. Also,... More »
I stayed at John's place for a week while on business. Although I had read a number of positive reviews of his apartment, my experience exceeded my high expectations. I arrived to find an immaculate apartment and a fridge stocked with "starter" items for breakfast (coffee, fruit, eggs...). John was a gracious host. who went out of his way to make sure I had everything I needed On my last evening there I enjoyed talking with him about our common interests in bicycling and kayaking. ... My stay in Old Town couldn't have been any nicer! The apartment was clean, bright, and well stocked. The location was excellent for exploring D.C., Arlington, and Alexandria. The short walk to the Metro's blue line was so much nicer than having to wait for a hotel shuttle to get you back and forth. John's place will always be my first choice for future visits to D.C.!
We enjoyed our stay in Alexandria. The place was very comfortable with everything we'd need supplied, including some food to start off the day. Perfect size for our family, just us and one teenager. Our host was very easy to reach when needed and easy to arrange meeting him to check in. He went out of his way to provide us a ride into DC and transported some of our bags as well. Much appreciated as the weather was unpredictable. We would definitely recommend staying here and would... More »
My boyfriend came in from England for the week and we wanted to stay someplace other than a hotel and this was perfect! John is a great host and his place was just as great, we felt completely at home and comfortable which gave us a lovely week together. The condo was immaculate and very well stocked, the breakfast goodies in the fridge made for a very relaxing first day not having to rush out to the store. Thanks for the hospitality!! Stacie & Mark
John's place is simply wonderful! I was visiting Washington, D.C., with my mom and my two daughters, ages 7 and 8 months, a true "girls' adventure" as my older daughter likes to call our vacations. In planning our trip, I wanted to find something that was comfortable, safe, and would give us plenty of room to spread out, especially with all of the stuff that a baby needs to survive and be happy! John's place fulfilled all of these requirements and then some! The apartment is clean,... More »
This is a great value. The rooms include a kitchen/living room/dining room, a bedroom, full bath, large closet, and a W/D. There is also an outside patio. It is tastefully decorated, private, and comfortable. It is very near Metro but a bit further from Oldtown. We love to walk, so had no problem. John is a gracious host and even rushed to help us when we locked ourselves out!
I had several questions prior to my stay, and John was wonderful in answering all of them! I really enjoyed my stay at his apt! The bed was super comfortable, the sheets and towels were super soft, and I felt at home in the apt. It was spotless! John takes great pride in the ownership of the unit! The metro is a couple of blocks away and Trader Joe's is only a few blocks away, so you won't even a need car. The airport is only one metro stop away! I would highly recommend staying at John's... Thank you John for the great accomodations! It was so much nicer staying at your apartment than in a hotel/motel and the metro being so close was a real plus. Your place was immaculate and the provisions you left in the fridge were appreciated. My grandson and I had a great week. Thanks again for everything and if we come that way again we will certainly get in touch.
We spent 8 days at John's place with my husband and 2 kids ages 8-13. It is so strategically located; close to the Metro station for easy access to DC attractions. Old town is a nice place to have dining and entertainment alternatives. The place is very clean has comfortable beds could easily handle a family of 4. John is a great host, he is so thoughtful and takes care of little but important things. I would definitely rate his place a top-notch and would like to stay again. yesim-ozgur
Allison and I stayed in John's apartment during our stay in Alexandria. What a great space, especially for two people! Both of us had our own space - one slept on the sofa bed; one slept in the bedroom. There is a door that divides the front room from the bed/bath, so if you are two single people traveling this is a nice arrangement. As mentioned in other posts, John is such a great host. He is hospitable, friendly, and accommodating. The apartment is extremely well-maintained and... More »
My husband and I stayed at John's apartment for a business conference. It is in a great location because of the proximity to the metro. We enjoyed the attention to detail and cleanliness of the place. You can definitely see pride in ownership. All in all it was a wonderful experinece and we look forward to coming back to Alexandria and... More »
We had a wonderful stay in Alexandria. John, was a great host. His one bedroom apartment was very nice. It was very nicely furnished and extremely well apointed, better than any apartment we have ever rented. John even had some breakfast supplies and a nice bottle of wine for us when we arrived. That was very thoughtful and very much appreciated. The location was good. It was conveniently close to the DC metro and walking distance to old town Alexandria.
This is a lovely apartment ,modern and tastefully furnished. One block to the metro, four blocks to grocer (Trader Joes). Great shopping in King St. John provided wine and food on arrival which was greatly appreciated. Alexandria is beautiful historic town with tree lined streets and well preserved houses. We would certainly stay there again Irene and Fiona
John and Catherine, we had wonderful time in Old time Alexandria - by far the best airbnb accommodation on our trip - well and truely 5 star - we had a ball - thank you to you both and we will be recommending your accommodation to all our friends. thank you again Jenny and Alun - Sydney Australia
stayed for 6nights,it was really comfortable and safe. Metro just a few blocks away. Weather was very warm, so it was nice to come back from touring and relax with the comforts of home. Johns apt is comfortable and convenient for whatever your plans are. Would be a great place to stay in the fall, great tree lined streets. Thanks John.
Just a couple nights for business. Beautiful, clean convenient place.
WOW. The apartment is even lovelier than the photos, and the host friendlier and more welcoming than he sounds on-line. We had an excellent mini-vacation, and we'd love to get back to Alexandria and to this bnb any time. Highly recommended!
Stayed in John’s place for four nights, cannot praise it enough, perfect location really comfortable and ideal for a single female tourist, area felt safe even walking from the metro after dark. Really short walk to Alexandria which was great for restaurants. John was very considerate and I felt that if I needed anything extra he would have supplied it but I didn’t require anything as the apartment is extremely well furnished. I hope to return to see the rest of the sights in the future and... More »
My husband and I and our new daughter had four wonderful nights in John's one bedroom in Alexandria. We could not have been more pleased. John was helpful in every way, hospitable, respectful of privacy, available if we needed him. He even sent our cellphone charger to us that we'd left behind! The apartment was spotlessly clean, easy to get to the Metro and newly built. Trader Joes was in walking distance as well. We were in the middle of a heat wave and the house was perfectly air... My wife and I just completed a 5 night stay with our 9 year old daughter. We spent the week as tourists in DC. Everything you read here is true. Johnny is a great person and his place is terrific as well. While we aren't real experienced with urban living, we found navigation to DC using the Metro easy. I have already suggesed staying with Johnny to several familly acquatances and would recommend to you as well.
We thoroughly enjoyed staying at John's apartment for two nights. It was nicely decorated and very comfortable. The apartment is located within walking distance to Old Town and the Metro. It was a pleasure meeting John; he was a gracious host. We look forward to staying there again in the future. Thanks, John. J and J. June 20-22, 2010.
I just had a 6 night stay at John's. It was a real pleasure to be hosted by John and to stay at his very lovely downstairs apt.in Old Town Alexandria. John was extremely accommodating to assure my comfort; he is prompt, clear and friendly in his communications; and an all-round nice, helpful guy. His place is your own private apt, beautifully appointed, from the comfy mattress and pillows, to a full kitchen, wifi, cable tv and generous closet and drawer space. The bedroom is quiet,... More »

Just returned from an 8-day stay at John's lovely apartment. We were welcomed by his enthusiasm and his spotless, comfortable, charming rental. We used his apartment as a base of operations for our vacation and found it exactly right for our family of three. Our teen son slept soundly on the convertible sleeper couch and took full advantage of the television access. Staying at John's place made us feel like Alexandrian locals in the evenings, following our DC day adventures. The walk to Old... More »

John's apartment is wonderful. It is beautifully decorated, nicely appointed, and contains everything you need for a comfortable stay. John is a gracious and thoughtful host. He stocked the refrigerator with breakfast foods, met us upon our arrival, and was available whenever we had any questions. My mom enjoyed her week-long stay at John's apartment in Alexandria. It was a convenient, comfortable and safe place for her, especially during the times she was not up to sightseeing and needed to rest. She loved the TempurPedic mattress and the comfy living room sofa, as well as the breakfast goodies John stocked in the refrigerator. It was a bit noisy from traffic during the daytime, but mostly remedied by closing the door to the front of the apartment so she could rest. The location... More »

Always a nice place to stay! Even during a snow storm! I spent my last weekend in D.C. at John's apartment (December 19th, 20th and 21st). See my other reviews for more details why this place is so convenient! Thanks again John! Gabriel
I rent this place for the second time to welcome my parents while visiting D.C. in mid November. They really enjoyed the apartment: "Perfect", "close to highways, grocery stores, etc", "It's amazing how we don't hear the street traffic", "definitely better than most of the hotels"... My brother was there too and said that the inflatable mattress was really comfortable. For more reasons why you should rent this place, see my other review. But I need to had something. I'm a little nervous giving John the full five stars--not because he doesn't merit the rating, but because I want his place to be available whenever I'm in the DC area. My worry: too glowing a review and he's always booked. John's small apartment was clean, well-furnished, comfortable and convenient to both DC and Northern Virginia. John went out of his way to make sure my girlfriend and myself felt welcomed and oriented. Lots of small touches--coffee filters, paper towels, soap, and... More »

November 2011We've known John for many years and have seen firsthand his healthy, active and fun lifestyle. What I didn't know about John before staying in his rental unit is that he has a great sense of style and is a great decorator! August 2010John's place is a real gem! You can tell that he puts as much effort and attention to detail into decorating his rental space as he does his own home. If I were new to the nation's capital or visiting for a short time, I would much prefer to stay here rather than a hotel. Not only will find yourself in more luxurious accomodations but you'll save money!
