One of us is a Zen priest, around-the-world sailor and occasional financial consultant, and the other is primarily an artist and used to write on green building technologies. We've been married 22 years and still like it. We love art and good food and spending money on adventures rather than stuff. We don’t own a TV or a dishwasher because most of our pottery and hand-made glass won’t work in one, anyway. We are friendly with our tenants (professional musicians), know all our neighbors, and love the outdoors.
We’ve owned our house, an 1870s Victorian, for 12 years and live on the 2nd and 3rd floors (we rent out the 1st floor to our long-time tenant). It’s on a quiet, sunny street of other Victorians on the South side of Prospect Hill, just above Union Square. There is a carriage house out back, and an art studio is on the first floor of this (we’re renovating the top floor gradually as a meditation hall). The property in general is on a slow schedule of both renovation and benign neglect: there are always several construction projects in process.
There’s a parking area in between the two buildings for four cars, and we also use this area for parties on occasion and for grilling, and for setting up the inflatable palm trees and wading pool and showing movies. There’s a garden.
And yes, fire spinning in the driveway is an option. Life motto? "Nothing exceeds like excess."
Wonderful, thoughtful hosts! I look forward to returning.
February 2012Jesa and John are two lovely people. They made me feel comfortable and offered help and tips to find my way around. The room is as described: the bed is very comfy and you have access to your own bathroom. The house is 25 min walk from Harvard Sq or you can take the bus and get there in 10 min, which is great. All in all, i have no complaints, it was a good experience.
I only stayed for a couple of days at Jesa & John and would have happily stayed longer! I really enjoyed talking with Jesa, she was very helpful and her suggestions were brilliant (I hadn't planned my trip too carefully). The house is very charming, the bed very comfortable, and I found it a very convenient location for exploring old Cambridge/ Harvard and the rest of Boston! I also wished I had more time for some reading; their library is very impressive!
Jesa was immediately very welcoming once I arrived. She showed me around the the place and had information waiting for me as well: places to eat close by, where to get the bus, etc. Jesa & John's place was very comforting and welcoming. Highly recommend if you're staying in Boston!
My stay with Jesa and John was simply excellent. The house is charming and very well-kept and there are heaps of great books to keep anyone busy. When I return to Boston in the future Jesa and John's home will definitely be my first choice! Thanks so much!
excellent hosts. very friendly, intelligent, helpful humans. please visit them whenever you can, except when i want to stay with them.
Jesa and John have to be two of the kindest people in the world. My experience staying with them this past week was stellar because of their hospitality. Before I arrived, Jesa gave me spot-on directions on how to get to their house. She also took the time to print a map of the surrounding area to let me know where exactly I was in relationship to the area around me. My bed was fully dressed with sheets and enough blankets (having planned my trip during the winter, blankets were very... More »
Jesa was a fantastic host. She was very interesting to talk to and she was great at helping us navigate our way through the city. With her help we experienced most of Boston and it was a blast. John was out of town so I hope we get to meet him next time. The SunnyLibrary space was just as described...very comfortable, clean and cozy. Very close to metro transit and there are some great neighborhood places within walking distance. We can't wait to go back!
In line with the others, Jesa & John are amazing hosts! They were very warm, I really enjoyed having conversations with them over tea. They were also very knowledgable about Boston, they could recommend you great places to visit or spend time at. They had a lot of experiences as hosts, so everything was prepared quite professionally. All processes (communications, check-in, check-out) was very smooth and easy, they were very prompt in responding. The location of their apartment was easy to... More »

Jesa and John are amazing hosts! Very friendly, caring and interesting people, can provide you with any information about Boston or anything else you might need. The area is pretty safe and the house was very warm and cosy, it was like staying with family members. Would definitely stay here if I visit Boston again.
It is my first time to use the airbnb. I meet really good family. John and Jesa are really nice. And they are glad to provide you the travelling information. I have a good time there.
John and Jesa are truly amazing and interesting people. There was always someone around to help to figure out the bus lines, give restaurant recommendations and discuss world politics in general :) The neighbourhood is really pretty and easy to get there (once you figure out how to read the bus plan). The airbed was highly comfortable, the internet connection was impeccable and the house itself warm and welcoming. I can recommend it very much.
Great, as usual!
I cannot tell you how delighted we were with AirBNB . Our hosts were helpful and a real treat to be around. They offered great ideas on where to get the best canolies and fresh seafood. YUM! The accommodations were comfortable and convenient. Who could ask for more? Based on my experience, I have and will continue to recommend Air BNB to my friends – those who aren’t my friends can stay at a hotel. Really – a great experience!
Jesa and John are very intelligent interesting people. The house is well decoreated with art, books, has a lot of character. The airbed is comofortable also. I enjoyed the morning coffee and conversation with Jesa. The house location is great, easy access to anything you need, free parking is big plus. Jesa and John refunded me one night stay due to the water tank broken even I insisted no. Gracious people, great hosts! Definitely going back again.
Super comfortable, very cute and charming place. Jesa was welcoming and helpful with orienting to the place. Everything was very logistically easy and well thought out. Pretty conveniently located to get to anywhere in Cambridge and many cute little cafes nearby. Over all a great spot, would recommend.
My stay was absolutely wonderful. Jesa and John are highly considerate, educated and very pleasant. My experience surpassed any expectations. Not only was the house charming, warm and clean, the atmosphere and conversations shared with Jesa and John were engaging and enjoyable. I certainly hope to come back soon and keep in touch.
What a find! I wish I could clone Jesa and John and their place in every city - I'd be able to travel a lot more, save a lot more, and be loads more comfortable. Jesa could not have been more helpful and gracious orienting me and welcoming me in their home. I'll definitely be back - don't hesitate to stay here, it's amazing!
Karma life and great coffee Generous warm reflected fun intelligent sustainable and aesthetic J&J Inspiring talks about life, earth, love, science and art Cat in the sun Beautiful old house with books, art, colors, tableaus and inspiring details My home abroad with friends I just hadn't met before This is where I hope to stay visiting Boston - and if they ever come to Denmark, my home is their home
Super-friendly and super-interesting hosts. My stay there reminded me of visits to some of my best friends. I look forward to staying there again on a future trip.
Jesa and John were absolutely gracious hosts. They were present, available and helpful. Any questions you have they will answer happily, and in the most accomodating manner. An A+ experience.
Highlights of my experience: Jesa spent about a half hour of her time explaining me how to get where I had to go quicker and cheaper. I should probably not reveal the following but here it is: she actually lent me cash for the bus when I realized I had only a credit card (Please use your judgment and do not expect this to happen, this is just to illustrate how great she was!) These guys merrit a 5 start rating in "accuracy" big time. What you see is what you get. The kitty cat is... More »

Great location and super hosts...it takes a special person to invite you into their home and Jesa and John are certainly special people. I had the pleasure of meeting with their VERY talented, much loved niece..she is a delight and hope to hear from them all again.
Jesa and John are lovely peaceful people whose house mirrors their personalities. You can feel the serenity as soon as you enter. They are great hosts who give you all the space you need yet make you feel welcome. If i stay in Boston again, i will be sure to check with them for availability.
Jesa and John are gracious hosts, and helpful with travel logistics and information. I felt a bit in the middle of things as there is only a curtain dividing the room from the house. Nice area and easy access to transportation.
Although mine was a very short overnight stay, I felt very welcome at Jesa and John's. My accommodations were super clean. The bed in the library is v-e-r-y comfortable and I enjoyed being surrounded by the wonderful books. Because of Jesa and John, there is an ease and tranquility about this place that would make it very easy to stay there again, if I'm in the area. Jesa and John are so welcome and helpfull..... The house was clean and beautiful, the neighborhood was very good with good houses, market, restaurants... I recommend to stay whith them... Thanks Jesa and John for everything! If i can back to Boston, i will be there again....
John and Jesa's place is really great and the whole house was decorated with their life interest and style. They provided me many suggestions and information about Boston and lots of good place to go. Their warm caring during my stay really made me to feel like home! I definitely will choose their place to stay when I have chance to visit Boston again.
Jesa and John were wonderful hosts who invited me to join them for dinner with friends the evening I arrived. I had a lovely time listening to their stories about sailing around the world and other life adventures. I didn't spend too much time at the house because I was at a conference, but everything was clean and tidy, and was just what I needed for a short stay in Boston. I highly recommend it.
Jesa was a wonderful host! Airbed was very comfortable. Location is convenient for buses to T stations. Highly recommended!
I felt very welcome here seeing my name on the door when I arrived. This is a historic building and it has a sign on the house that says it. It's amazing how this place is made so livable and clean from where it first started. Jesa will explain it to you. Once inside the house and up the staircase, I felt like I arrive at a secret hiding place, a place you can rest safely away from it all. Words cannot describe how wonderful Jesa is as a host. I stayed at their Sofa-isticated Basics for 3 nights and it was my best stay at a room for rent in my entire life. I only stayed at Jesa & John's place for one night, but I can say that they are super great hosts without hesitation. I had very precise directions on how to come to the house from the airport, so I had no problem getting there. This was my first time trying out airbnb and I'm gad everything turned out well! Jesa and John were really great hosts and replied my emails promptly which gave me a peace of mind. The bed was comfy and bathroom was clean. I would stay here if I visit Boston again in the future :) Thanks for hosting us!
I stayed 2 times at Jesa and John. Wonderful hosts, very welcome to the guest, try to help in any undertakings. The convenient location at home, despite a slight distance from the center - I always went to the house on foot from the subway, looking at the Cambridge and Somerville, usually no more than 20-30 minutes from the metro. Buses are of course, and from the bus stop to go much closer, but I do not need. A cozy, very nice house and a room - you feel really at home, especially if you... More »
I can thoroughly recommend staying at John & Jesa's to anyone. I stayed on the inflatable air mattress in the lounge and was very happy with everything - nice welcome (they put a sign out for me on the door so I know where to come), wonderful house, and very friendly hosts.
Due to circumstances out of our control we were unable to stay with Jesa and John. I found them very easy to deal with and they were excellent help with directions im just sorry we didnt get over to them. I would highly recommoned anyone who is thinking of staying to do so as they come across as lovely people and i know we would have had a great time with them
Our stay in John & Jesa house was fantastic. They are really nice and they try to help us bevause the weather was not really good. The place was clean and we have a liitle but fantastic stay. Will be there again when go to Boston again. Thanks for all!
This was my first airbnb experience and it was lovely. I stayed one night with Jes and John and it was terrific. I enjoyed meeting both of them and I felt very welcome in their home. The room was as described and I slept very comfortably. I will definitely plan to stay with them on my next trip to Boston.
The "sofa-isticated Basic" was everything I was promised. It was very comfortable and the space was private enough for what I needed. Although some people have complained about the lack of air conditioner the temperature was perfect. In between the windows and the selling vent it was just fine. I had a very comfortable stay here, on an air matress. Although in the lounge, it felt very private. John and Jesa were very helpful with suggestions of places to go and how to get there. So thanks for a great stay :)
A great spot in a very interesting district. Loved Somerville and its vibe. Jesa and John are great hosts. The library room is bright and very comfortable. The cat Humbert is an entertaining character! We'd definitely stay here again.
My stay here was very relaxed and comfortable! Jesa and john were so sweet and helpful in their advice regarding places to eat, bus schedules, etc. I would stay here again and would recommend it to anyone else visiting! Thanks so much! Lovely and very warm house.
I was sleeping on the bed with clean pillow, blanket, and sheet. Their (Jesa, John, and the cat) hospitality impressed me, I spent only one night though.
Jesa and John are such wonderful and welcoming people. They provided everything I needed and more and made my stay in Boston just great. I can't recommend staying with them enough!
When we arrived we were made to feel very welcome. John & Jesa were very helpful and offered lot of sage advice when we called upon them. The neighbourhood is lovely and safe, with lots of interesting shops and eateries representing a range of different ethnic groups. The transport links into town were good and made it an easily accessible spot. The room itself was clean and comfortable. Very enjoyable stay.
Jesa and John are so kind and friendly. I had a great time. If I get a chance to visit Boston again, I really want to stay there. Thank you so much!!
It´s my first experience with Aibnb and my experience has been very good. My homestay parents are very polite and they are a new friends. Undoubtedly I recommended this homestay. The home is perfect if you want to go near Harvard. The bus stpos are near and are easy distances to go walking.
It was a fun experience staying with Jesa and John in their quaint house. The airbed was surprisingly comfortable and I had excellent sleep. Although I was in the living room, the curtains provided enough privacy which is just how I like it. The shower was great.! Location was excellent and near to a bus stop that will take you to the subway (: Safe neighborhood. I would recommend this house!
Jesa and John are very nice. The bed is comfortable, as are the pillows and there are several of them. The room has a private sink and toilet and you share the shower upstairs with J+J. Well, not that kind of sharing... Note to self: ask if there is air conditioning before booking! There wasn't and it was 107 degrees. They did provide a powerful fan tho, so with the help of a shower first, I managed to sleep fairly ok. I only slept there and left early in the morning. John kindly helped... More »

Staying with Jesa and John was like visiting old friends. I left wishing I had more days in Cambridge to be able to continue the various engaging conversations we started. I have the feeling that we will, for next time it will be, in fact, visiting old friends.
Hi! As a girl travelling alone I found it quite exciting in the beginning, as this was my first time doing such a thing. John & Jesa were really friendly though and I felt totally safe there. John and Jessa were extremly helpful, even before I arrived they helped me figure out transportation around Boston. Once I arrived they were very welcoming. The Library room was very relaxing and I had a hard time resisting all those books. Humbert the cat kept me company while I unpacked. The bed was very soft and the room felt cool even in the summer. John and Jesa's place was just perfect after a long weekend in Western Mass. They are exceptionally kind hosts offering me local information, maps, anything. I slept well and I love the home filled with books and light! THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Our stay in the Sunny Library was great. The room was very comfortable. Jesa and John's home is in a perfect location if you are looking for a place near Harvard. I highly recommend Jesa and John as welcoming, knowledgeable, and helpful hosts. Jesa helped me with everything from transportation logistics to restaurant suggestions to information about historic Boston. Well to my disappointment I arrived very late as the bus had problems, but when I arrived at the early morning hour I still was asked to take off my shoes, there was no shower as the waste water was not connected to any drain away, the walls were just covered with blankets and sheets to hide the timber and brick work, not my cup of tea, for the money I paid, and I had to take my shoes off. Sorry I tell it as I see it Raymond
Jesa and John offer a lovely place to stay in Somerville - MA and are simply fantastic people, you couldn't ask for better hosts. They immediately made us feel comfortable and at home, which really contributed to our fantastic holiday to Boston and the surroundings. Coming back from a day of adventuring to be able to sit down with John and Jesa and share our adventures over a cup of tea was simply delightful.
Jesa and John are the most wonderful hosts you could get. They're very kind and helpful with their guests. Jesa even called me when I was on my way there to see if I needed help with directions. John and Jesa were wonderful hosts. We had a fine time in the library with a comfortable bed and an essentially private 1/2 bath. The shower upstairs was one of the best I've been in in years... great pressure!!!. If you like books, you might have to keep your eye on your time, because its easy to get lost in them. If ever I am in need of a place to stay in Boston, I will definitely look them up again.
Jesa and John we're incredibly gracious hosts and excellent to chat with. Comfortable bed and very unique library-room.
Excellent place to stay! Genuinely wonderful people~ Thanks again!
Wonderful hosts. A credit to the AirB&B community.
Jesa & John have an amazing space and are such gracious hosts. I appreciated everything about my stay with them. Looking forward to seeing them again.
Very warm and friendly- beautiful place and overall a great night~ Thank you!
Wonderful people; great conversations. Jesa and John are perfect hosts, extraordinarily knowledgeable about Boston and its environs. I was lucky to discover them and their home.
Jesa & John were both great hosts! The house was well decorated and very clean. I believe the best part of their accommodations is their shower! I'd kill to have that! It was a great way to start my morning. My accommodations were ready for me before I arrived. I will definitely stay with Jesa & John again, they were great hosts.
Wonderful, as usual. A real treat!
Jesa & John are such a lovely couple! Very beautiful place to stay, great hosts and great stay. I deeply recommend them.
A truly delightful place as long as you don't mind a little exposed plaster and lathe. We stayed in Jesa and John's library for a weekend whlle helping our son and his roommates move across town. We had never been to an Airbnb place before, and didn't know what to expect. We pushed open the front door and heard glorious opera music streaming, it seemed, through patches of bare lathe of the stairway walls, and said, "Oh... it's like being at home! It's like staying with friends..." And it... More »
Jesa and John were extremely hospitable, and were quite conscientious about my comfort. Their cat, Humbert, is also very welcoming. The air mattress is very cosy, and the house itself is lovely.
Superb, as usual.
We stayed with Jesa and John only for a night. They are great hosts; we wish we had stayed longer to know them a little better. Very kind people, very clean house and very comfortable place to stay.
The house was warm and welcoming. Jesa John and always willing to give us information about restaurants, places of historical and artistic interest, and any useful information about Boston and New England. The library / bedroom was very nice, quiet and clean. Finally a beautiful cat often kept us company. The house is in a quiet, beautiful and very well connected in the middle. I recommend everyone to spend the holidays with John and Josie
What a great host! Jesa was warm, inviting and VERY helpful in planning our time in the region. She made us tea when we arrived late at night after a cold day, and invited a friend over to tell us about the area we planned to visit the next day. She even called us the night before to make sure we knew how to get to her home. The bed was very comfortable and the conversation was a highlight of our trip to Boston. I would definitely recommend staying with Jesa and John (whom we... More »
Jesa and John are very special people. Very creative, kind and funny. Looking forward to staying with them again.
This was our first time using airbnb. Jesa & John are wonderful hosts who enjoy the lives that they want. It will always be a joyful experience to spend days with energetic people like them. We had great chatting about art, architecture, and so many other things. This made our stay in Boston more than what we had expected.
Jesa & John are the most thoughtful and caring hosts, they provided for everything and are very warm and welcoming. I stayed for a short while and had a busy schedule, but I enjoyed their company immensely and their place is beautiful, with lots of art all around. Very close to public transportation and of-course John and Jesa are very helpful. I will definitely want to stay with them if I have another opportunity. :)
Jesa and John were very friendly and polite. They were cooperative and took their cat away once i told them that i am afraid of pets. I had some issues with room heating (may be i required more) but they were available in the middle of night to fix it. I loved the huge library that they have. I wanted to ask them if they actually rented it. haha...The bed and linen was clean and comfortable. Overall i think i would choose them as hosts again.
Jesa and John, thanks again for a wonderful stay! -Zaki
Jesa &John are what make the airbnb option such a good idea. Their home is welcoming/clean and in a very cool residential area in Boston. My son and I went to Boston to see the Patriots crush the Jets 45 to 3. We took a couple of days to hang out in Boston as well. Jesa and John were perfect hosts and their home was a great place to start our trip.I hope I get more of a chance to visit with them next time. Thankyou again, Francis and Samuel
I had a very nice stay with Jesa and John. They are both warm, welcoming and caring hosts. I would recommend them to others.
Our first airbnb experience and thanks to Jesa and John, this will certainly not be our last. Hospitable, welcoming and full of tips and suggestions, Jesa and John made us feel very much at home. We had an excellent night sleep - probably due to the good vibes of their beautiful home.
Jesa & John are warm and accommodating and went out of their way to make sure that we had everything that we needed. They are both very knowledgeable not only about Boston, but also about all things cultural, artistic, gastronomic, etc. - which makes for some interesting and enlightening conversations. We stayed in the Sunny Library (filled with fascinating books on a very wide variety of subjects). The room is very quiet at night and easy to sleep in. We were able to use the kitchen to make... I loved staying here. Not only are Jesa and John very kind and interesting people and their home filled with beautiful things and a comfortable place to stay, but the neighborhood is wonderful. I suggest you hit The Independent Pub for a beer and a bite then go up to Prospect Hill to get an amazing view of the city. I'm so glad I found this great place to stay in the Boston area. Thanks Jesa and John for opening your home to wayward travelers!
Good people
Great place to stay. Comfortable bed, great conversation, good location, very good experience
John and Jesa's place is so conveniently located--we could walk to Harvard, MIT and Boston. Jesa was so helpful with any questions we had or directions we needed. I'd come again.
more helpful and kind than we could have expected! super comfy bed, lots of storage too, and always a warm cozy temperature. there is construction going on, but they went out of their way to make us comfortable. very much appreciate how they engaged with my daughter too! thank you, thank you, we had an amazing time!
Our stay with Jesa & John was ideal. The location, while not on a main subway line, was very close to a frequent bus stop, and we were able to quickly learn how to get to and from, which helped a lot because we were only there 3 days. Our original directions to their home were screwy ((website hidden) maps) but after realizing we hadn't arrived when we said we were, John called us and got us there quickly. Unfortunately we didn't get to see much of Jesa as she was out of town for most of our quick trip... More »
They were great hosts! Very fun to talk to, and they made sure that I was comfortable in that place! I loved my stay! I highly recommend you to stay at Jesa&John's place!
John and Jesa are wonderful hosts. Our first visit there was a bit puzzeling, as we could not find a functioning doorbell anywhere, but we quickly learned that they were expecting us and that they do answer their telephone! It was certainly worth calling to be able to stay with them. The house is like many places in the Mediterranean world: The outside is there to keep solicitors away. The inside is lovely.
Jesa and John were very pleasant to stay with during our 5 days in Boston. Access to public transportation from the house was easy. The Library was cozy, warm, and comfortable. There was plenty of reading material to keep even the un-saviest of readers like myself entertained. The upstairs shower had to be shared between us, Jesa, John, and any other fellow travelers staying with them; so if you have time sensitive plans in the morning let them know when you need the bathroom. I feel very fortunate to have found such a lovely couple who opened their hearts and home to me. For my purposes, the package was complete! A warm inviting home with a clean, comfy bed, hot shower, and a close, safe commute to Harvard. The air mattress was firm, very cozy, and perfect for me! The feather bed and pillows were divine! With the scent of fresh linen, I drifted off into tranquility, and awoke refreshed and energized each morning. I marvel at Jesa and John for the ambition and... More »
Jesa and John were great hosts who were very friendly and accommodating. They were interested in our stories and shared theirs. Felt like we were part of the family. Friendly cat. Interesting neighborhood convenient to public transportation. We felt it was a top-notch experience.
If you love quietly friendly, humorous, active people, who can converse about anything, tons of books and one friendly but singular cat - all "packaged" in a woodframe work-in-progress Victorian house on a quiet residential street - then this is the place you should stay while in Boston. The house is full of life and wonderful artistic prompts. If you are not self-disciplined, you may just decide to forget the rest of Boston and hunker down in the library, which would probably not... The two nights we stayed at Jesa and John's house were wonderful and the room was very tranquil and nicely decorated. I highly recommend staying at their home!!
Jesa & John are the most welcoming, helpful and interesting hosts--living in a fascinating old 1870's home that's "on a slow schedule of renovation". John will give you all the info you need to use public transportation. Jessa will dry your rain drenched shoes in her oven! Their location is most convenient for a long walk to the Harvard area and for catching public transportation wherever. We recommend them.
A great and wonderful couple. I slept on an air mattress in the sofatastic room which they had ready for when I arrived. Another couple from New Zealand was staying in the bedroom across the hall. John and Jesa were very friendly to provide any help. I heard them having morning coffee and conversations, which was a bit too early for me but i could hear them enjoying good conversations. The house is a solid five minute walk to bus stops which will take you to the red T line. Very safe... More »
I believe a review should be constructive and above all honest. I have given this place 3 stars because of the friendliness and helpfulness of both Jesa and John, they are both very knowledgeable with advice re Boston, what to do and where to go etc. However the house is really a bit ramshackle both inside and out, I honestly don't think that they should be having guests stay in the midst of doing renovations. The walls and ceiling in the bathroom were stripped revealing lathes and plaster... More »
Amazing as the last time. They truly are wonderful people :)
We had a really great experience staying in jessa and john's place. Jessa gave us a lot of advices and recommendations, and provided us with maps and tourist information. The room (the house generally) is very beautiful and comfortable and its very good located. Humbert the cat was a very nice and respectful room mate! We will stay here again if (i wish i could) i return to boston!!
i was as sick as a puppy when i arrived and jesa & john's place was the perfect place to recover. :) jesa was so accommodating, too bad i wasn't able to see john, perhpas next time??? :) so everyone visiting cambridge/somerville, check out this place!
I loved staying at Jesa & John's. The house really showcases their personalities (well, Jesa's as I didn't manage to meet John). The room is really fun with wall lined book shelves. I particularly love the bathroom with its old mirrors. Jesa welcomed us back after a heavy downpour with lovely tea and their cat is very handsome with large round eyes. We had dinner at a Mexican restaurant, breakfast at a Portuguese diner, and coffee - all within walking distance. We also walked to Harvard... More »
I wish I could have stayed longer at jesa & john's place. Jesa is a wonderful host (I wasn't able to see John) Great location, detailed description of how to get around with a map, very nice house. I will recommend this place to anyone visiting Boston.
Oh my goodness, what can I say about the nicest couple in all of MA?! I booked the couchtastic room and I got to say it was crazy comfortable and John & Jesa were so nice! I got on the wrong bus and John came out to get me at 11 at night! I chatted with them for awhile and they are really great people and they have an adorable cat too. I will recommend them to anyone visiting Boston, you will love it!
Jesa and John are wonderful hosts! Unfortunately we had only a few hours in Boston, and for that short time, they gave us enough great tips of what to do for at least a week! I wish we could have stayed longer.
Great hosts, wonderful location. Detailed description of how to get to the place - tick; accommodating amendments to the reservation at short notice - tick; warm welcome upon arrival - tick; helpful tips on getting around - tick; private, clean and cosy room - tick; forthcoming, friendly and fascinating hosts - tick.
Jesa & John are an absolute delight - and while the house is in the disarray of being under renovation, it felt totally comfortable to me, and so did they themselves - I relaxed there so much that my first night, I slept for 11 hours, sunshine & other people's quiet morning sounds notwithstanding. For me the only drawback was that at 65 I have a little bit of difficulty with stairs - but was able to manage. The fresh fruit and delicious coffee more than made up for it. I will be happy to... It's going to be hard to describe my experience at Jesa & John's house in a short text. First, and I think most important, they both are really nice persons. As soon as you get there you feel almost like you have arrived at your parents house. And we went to many of them (and most we would never even hear about, like Gardner's Museum or... More »
Well where do I start! this is a must for anyone wanting to stay in Boston. I can honestly say that John and & Jesa have been the best hosts that I have encountered. The house is fantastic, the area is great (especially so close to town) and the rates are superb. Thanks so much to you both for making my holiday such a wonderful experience. I look forward to seeing you both again soon. Zac
Jessa and John are remarkably knowledgeable and warm. We only stayed one night, but felt we were with family. Their suggestions for places to eat and how to get around were very helpful. Accommodations were very adequate in the library. Their suggestion of the breakfast at the outdoor Neighborhood Cafe was fantastic. Jack and Jeannie from Fort Worth, TX
Jesa and John were great hosts. Very polite and caring. Were willing to help all the time especially in assisting a guest get his way round the great city of Boston. They are wonderful story tellers and I loved the stories we shared every morning and evening. They indeed made my stay a memorable one. Hope to be with then again sometime in the future. David.
Jesa and John are wonderful hosts! Their home is peaceful and serene and my son and I felt very welcomed. The library is a great place to sleep or hang-out and peruse the huge collection of books they have. Jesa and John are nice hosts {even if we had to wait 40 minutes at their door the first day... } The area is definitely not the best in Somerville but as we stayed only one night and and paid a cheap price it was OK.
We absolutely agree with the tone of the preceding reviews, even if a hectic schedule precluded very much socializing with our hosts. They were marvelous. We stayed in SunnyLibrary. Mindboggling for a book lover like me. The guest shower remains under construction (sink and toilet fine), but there were no issues with using the upstairs facility. It happened that our eight days coincided with an uncharacteristic summer heat wave. On a couple of the hottest nights, air conditioning would... More »

I had a wonderful stay at John and Jesa's home. It was clean and comfortable with beautiful art I really appreciated looking at. Cute friendly kitty cat too who likes to come say hi! The location is very close to public transportation. It is also very close to many restaurants and sights. I can only recommend Jesa and John`s place. Jesa and John are really nice people and the room is very cosy. It is worth the money. It is much better than a hotel. The public transport from their place is o.k., even though you have to wait sometimes for the buses. Sabine
Me and my boyfriend stayed two nights in July 2010 at the home of Jesa and John. We experienced a wonderful stay at a home away from home. Jesa and John welcomed us very friendly and were easy to talk two. All in all we had a wonderful time in Somerville and would highly recommend Jesa and John as your future host.
Had an absolutely wonderful experience staying with Jesa and John in their "sofa-isticated basic" living room. Greeted by a friendly welcome sign on the door and smiling and gracious hosts (along with a playful kitty), I was immediately made comfortable and welcome. My stay with Jesa and John was very relaxed and comfortable. It's nice to have some time to visit (would have liked more) as they are very interesting folks, as well as kind and friendly. Jesa's artistic talent is amazing. The neighborhood felt very safe and was a lovely five minute walk past victorian homes from/to Union Square, which has a variety of restaurants and pubs. Transporation easily linked up at Union Square to everywhere. Without a doubt, I would stay again when in Boston.
Jesa and John were great host. I was first time to travel by alone. But they greeting me very friendly. And I was really appreciate about their help. So, it was first time to go to Boston. So Jesa let me know specific directions. I never forget their friendly greeting. I was really comfortable in there. And I met a great neighborhood of her.I reall appreciate.
You couldn't imagine two more interesting and friendly hosts for your stay in the Boston area. The evening I arrived, around 9pm, Jesa and John offered me iced jasmine tea and a bowl of fresh cherries to share with their other guests, a young couple from Europe. We sat around the dining room table in conversation -- so much nicer than watching TV in a motel room. All I would add as a cautionary note for anyone staying in the living room is that the one bathroom available for your use in... More »

A short walk away are various buses that could take you to the red line and we had no problem getting around. Would stay with them again if I am back in Boston.
We enjoyed John's company and expertise greatly (Jesa was out of town for most of our stay). We were traveling with a 20-month old toddler, who fell in love with John. He let her pull on his beard, count his buttons, and was endlessly patient and sweet with her. In the morning I had superior coffee prepared in a Bodum French Press. After some breakfast Jesa shared a bit about herself in response to my curiosity. She then gave me a warm and deliciously fun studio tour which revealed some rich treasures. Thank you!
Staying with John and Jesa was perfect for me. It was close to Harvard Square (just 10 mins on a bus or a very easy 30 minute walk) and Somerville is a lovely neighborhood with plenty of restaurants. Whenever you have to go on a business trip to Boston, you should stay with Jesa and John. A quiet neighborhood, parking, and a cute little cat are waiting for you, in addition to a lovely couple. I slept like an angel and enjoyed comfortable hours of rest in between my long conference days. My late arrival was not a problem at all and I was very warmly welcomed. This is the place to go!

Make friends with their cat Humpert and enjoy your stay, including warm breakfast each morning. Plus, how often do you get to stay with a Zen priest under one roof?
You couldn't find two nicer and more knowledgeable hosts than John and John! They're incredibly accommodating--how many people who invite you to breakfast or to get a book from their personal library--and very informed about the culture in Boston and the surrounding area. I had a wonderful time at Jesa and John's Place. It was a healing experience. I felt like I was at home away from home. They are very entertaining, generous and engaging. We had a good time cooking; trying out different dishes and everytime it came out really good. I can't wait to get back there one of these fine days.
We can't wait to stay at Jesa and John's again! They were warm, funny, helpful and generous to my twin teenagers and myself. They let us use their very well-equipped kitchen to make a gluten-free breakfast, they shared their own dinner when the pizza delivery guy was 2 hours late, Jesa gave us a private tour of her fabulous art studio and John shared an earbud and listened to "grunge" music with my son. We slept well, plenty of hot water, plenty of privacy, amazing library. After so many... More »
My stay with Jesa & John was truly wonderful, they were very accommodating of my fortuitous late arrival, and it was a home away from home; I did not feel displaced even after 8 hours of driving and car trouble. Conversations over Jesa's delicious oatmeal breakfast was a great way to start the day, I ended up staying there until noon the next day whereas I would be up and out around seven if I was staying elsewhere. I greatly recommend them if you're passing by the area.
Staying at Jesa and John's house was a delight in all respects. Jesa's breakfasts were tasty and healthy, our conversation with both John and Jesa was informed and edifying, and our room (in "SunnyLibraryVictorianHome") was warm and comfy! My wife and I will relocate to Boston this summer to attend Harvard, and so we stayed here in Somerville (a great neighborhood) for 5 days and 4 nights as we searched for schools for our children. Jesa and John's knowledge of the city as well as their... More »
They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Well this is most true when you meet John and Jessa who are very gracious, welcoming hosts. I reserved the "Sofa-isticated" room, had a wonderful night's sleep and awoke to a very healthy breakfast. It literally is a home away from home. I look forward to staying with them again on my weary travels to Boston. By the way, Pumpkin (my cat) sends a "Meow Out" to Humbert Kitty.
Jesa and John are excellent hosts. Jesa helped me with Boston directions and cooked a delicious oatmeal breakfast. I enjoyed meeting them and it was wonderful to have such a restful place to stay during a hectic trip of many meetings--I only wish I had been in Boston for more than one night!
Thank you for a wonderful, restful night and a companionable breakfast. I'll be back!
Jesa and John are warm and congenial hosts, and my stay with them for two days was a pleasant one. If you love books, this is the place for you; the guest room has a library that has books on every conceivable subject. The neighborhood is laid back, has some nice coffee hangout places and if it wasn't so cold, I would have gotten to know more of it better. Jesa and John offer a very nice place to stay while in Boston or Cambridge.
I cannot speak highly enough of these hosts, as well as their place. During my stay, I enjoyed a well-appointed room, privacy, and incomparable hospitality; all while being surrounded by interesting artwork and books on countless subjects. A+!
I am so pleased and feel so lucky to meet this fabulous couple at Boston. Our last conversation was like this"Come back,Zhao" and a big hug! During my one week staying in Boston, I learned a lots of lots of cultural and art knowledge from John and Jesa, John 's a great Buddhism believer, he's telling me quite a lot about Zen and Chan, he loves Tang & Song Dynasty art in China, and also he's such a scholarly connoisseur who can tell the difference between varied genres which amazed me! And I... More »

((Due to my multiple booking at your place.)) Did I mention about the kitty, he is cute and interesting to be around with guest. If you like cat or would like to experience in a Victorian House, you should try to visit Jessa&John's place in Somerville. :d
Thanks a bunch.... Jessa&John, I really enjoy along the week that I stay in both Lib&air bed at your charming Victorian home. I highly recommend everyone to experience the warm-welcoming, if you plan to visit Boston,Cambridge area. The transportation is easy and there is many interesting restaurant to try close to the house. :-)
My trip to Boston was extraordinarily pleasant, and part of that was because I stayed in Jesa & John's place. Jesa is just so nice and fun person to be around. If I had more days at their place, I would have just hung out with her at her studio. She even lent her ship skin coat to my friend (both of us are from California, and my friend had a cute-but-very-thin jacket). Oh oh oh oh did I mention Jesa had personally met Andy Warhol??? Yep, she's cool like that. I truly enjoyed staying there,... More »

Jesa and John are wonderful people. They really take the time to welcome you into their home. They even gave us some delicious oatmeal for breakfast. We only stayed one night but it was one of the best experiences we've had. The room was cozy and warm. The bed was clean and comfortable. And what a book collection! I would recommend Jesa & John to anyone who visits Boston. Humbert the cat was definitely the cherry on top of the sundae. We love cats and he was adorable x (phone number hidden).
Thank you Jesa and John for your warmth and graciousness during my visit. The library room is deliciously cozy and comfy and I had some of the sweetest dreams ever...I would highly recommend J & J's place to anyone looking for a bit of offbeat adventure and a wonderful night of peaceful sleep surrounded by soothing colors, vivid fabrics, fascinating books and nice smells, all of which contribute to making one feel very much at home.

I really enjoyed my short stay with Jesa & John. Jesa treated me like family and picked me up at the subway after I had got lost for over thirty minutes. She is an amazing artist and beautiful person. I would give my stay 5 stars. Thank you again for everything Jesa & John.
I booked the accommodation for my parents that were traveling from Europe, making one day stop in Boston. Jessa was extremely helpful with setting everything up, answered all my questions and ensured my parents were going to be well taken care of. My parents opted for the metro transportation to Harvard and then took a taxi for $8 to J&J's place; altogether it took them about 45 minutes from the air port, which was about what they expected. During their stay, they visited Harvard that was... More »
J&J were great hosts and the library bed very comfortable.I was busy with my Reunion but I enjoyed the breakfast and the stories about their adventures together. Missed seeing Jesa's art and so much more. Want to come back!!
On a whirlwind trip through Boston, I had the pleasure of staying with Jesa and John for a night. They, and their delightful cat, were wonderful, accommodating, invigorating hosts, and my only regret was that I didn't stay longer. Their book selection hasn't been exaggerated, and Jesa's homemade plum jam is not to be missed. The house, while very much under construction, is charming and the room is comfortable and very private. Thanks, John and Jesa!
During my entire stay, Jesa and John made me feel completely welcome. They're extremely friendly, helpful and sincere of making ones stay absolutely wonderful. Private room (slept like a baby) with wide assortment of books and private half bath with shower upstairs....added entertainment of adorable friendly cat. Both were full of info. on just about anything possible. Jesa and John made my visit to Boston so much more memorable...I'm eager to return and definitely recommend for others to... More »

We had a wonderful warm experience staying in Jesa and John's home. They are each interesting, thoughtful and kind and want to make sure you are comfortable and happy while you are there. Their home is bright and lovely and if you enjoy books and art you'll have plenty to feast your eyes upon. Jesa makes sure you see everything great and walk down the best streets as you explore the area. Somerville, where they live, is actually quite a cool area as well and is worth visiting.( with... The first night we stayed in the Sofa-isticated front room. The airbed was comfortable for the taller of us and the sofa was fine for me (1.6m). We then moved into the library for several nights where we slept well on a sofabed. Jesa and John were friendly, helpful, and simpatico hosts. On arrival, we needed to find a pharmacy and Jesa volunteered to accompany us and tell us about the neighbourhood during our short walk. I had business in Cambridge and found access from Somerville... More »

The room is very nice, i loved all the books and there's much light. they are renovating the bathroom close to the room, but it's great anyway. the shower upstairs is the best i've had in all my travels. bus stops are really close and somerville is a nice town!Great food. and a fun kitty to play with.
Wow! Get ready for some fun with two of the most interesting folks you could hope to meet. Jesa and John take the time to make you feel right at home. She makes a nice breakfast and allows you kitchen privleges if necessary. They know many interesting places to visit, good restaurants, and clubs to enjoy. The bathroom is unfinished but convenient to the library cum bedroom. Windows open and the futon is comfy. The books reflect the many interests of the hosts, Buddhism, cooking, architecture,... All of the other reviews are dead on accurate as is the description of the property by Jesa. The bed is comfortable and public transport workable once you figure things out. There is a small village at the end of the street with all the food places you could want. Room includes a parking space if you need it. Does not have a TV or air conditioning so think about that if its important to you. I would come back for sure.
This is my best experience as a guest in my life. Jesa & John are very caring and they will make you feel at home. I lived in a wonderful room full of books and great art works. You have easy access to Sullivan Station and no of buses which leave to MIT/ Harvard. If I have to come back to Boston, ill will be here only. Thank you Jesa & John, you were very helpful at I time I need someone around. I highly recommend this place for stay in Cambridge/Boston.
A very good place to stay. Very nice, very hospitable and interessting people. We spend a much nicer time in this house, then we could have spend in any hotel. Thank you for beeing our Hosts. Wera + Igor
Jesa and John were very friendly people.
June 2011Jesa and John are very nice people, and they were very communicative about their arrival time and other details.
I didn't get to hang out with John as much as I'd've liked, but he was a good guest — very clean and considerate. I'd love to have chatted with him more, he seemed like a great guy with a really interesting background.
John was a pleasure to have in my home - interesting background, great conversations, pleasant person. I would welcome him back any time!
John was a terrific guest and great to have around. A very interesting person with great experiences! He is polite, easy going and it was nice to meet him.
John and Jesa are wonderful people with a great home. You can't find better hosts for your trip to Boston.
November 2009Jesa & John are two of my favorite people in the entire world. Your stay will not only be wonderful, but an artistic & spiritual adventure as well. What more could you ask for? And such a BARGAIN!
