I've been a busy airbnb host for more than a year now! I have a larger 3-bedroom apartment and rent out the spare rooms through airbnb. I prefer prospective guests who have filled out their profile and posted a photo; keep in mind that we won't be directly contacting each other until AFTER a booking is accepted. Make it easier for me to accept by finishing your profile!
My place isn't luxurious, its a normal vintage Chicago apartment, but I do provide fresh bed linens and towels for every guest. I use a drop-off laundry service to guarantee that linens and towels are fresh and clean every time, and I know the bed linen section at Ikea pretty well by now.
I keep things like an ironing board, iron, hair dryer, and new toothbrushes available for guests, if you need them.
I have wi-fi internet and a computer and scanner/printer for your use.
Parking is free on the street, and my place is particularly convenient to O'Hare, downtown Chicago, Bucktown/Wicker Park and the DePaul area.
My girlfriend and I had a great stay at Ray's house. Couldn't ask for a better host. Ray went above and beyond in assisting us with transportation, served us tea every morning…even shared his own Skippin' Jenny with us. If you've never had her, she's quite delicious! (It's a stew, silly!) Made us feel welcome and at home. Cool neighborhood, awesome dog. Etc. Etc. Etc. Do it!
January 2012As a first timer of airbnb, I wasn't sure what to expect, but because of such great reviews for this place, I was sure to have a great time. I would first like to say that Ray goes above and beyond to be an awesome host. From the beginning to end of our stay, Ray was just a gem! Great host, nice location (a little less than a mile away from the subway), and super affordable. When leaving, I left thinking "I would definitely come back to Chicago again!"
Bottom line: comfortable, inexpensive, reasonably close to the Blue Line train. Ray's a friendly guy with a sweet dog. There's tea available and he made breakfast a couple mornings. It's about a 10-15 minute walk to the Logan Square train stop. The apartment is pretty beat up, so keep that in mind if you're the picky type, but at this price range you should't be!
Ray was a gracious and accommodating host who went out of his way to be helpful. The room was made up perfectly and was very comfortable. He supplied me with a covered parking right behind the house. Great space in a cool neighborhood. Easy walk to stores and restaurants.
I visited for a family wedding and wanted a place to stay that was inexpensive with an easy in-easy out. Ray is a former CouchSurfing host turned AirBnB rockstar. He's a warm and wonderful guy that I wish I got to spend more time with. It took me exactly 45 minutes from O'Hare to Ray's home via train and walking. Good local recommendations on yummy Mexican food and a wash and fold for my laundry. Everything is as you see it in the photos. High value for your money... More »
Ray is a great and friendly guy! His place has got everything that I needed. The Check in and check out was easy and convenient.
Loved staying here! Very cute neighbourhood halfway between downtown Chicago and O'Hare, on the blue line -- convenient for me and for a friend who was flying in to O'Hare. Takes about 40 minutes to get into the city "from door to door" so to speak. Ray is a fabulous and friendly host. Enjoyed checking out the Wicker Park neighbourhood (delicious brunch + fabulous second hand books) a couple of metro stops away. Only minor complaint was bathroom cleanliness. Thanks for a great stay!
It was ok. Ray is very friendly and helpful with directions.
nice place, nice people, nice dog. Every thing is good, like it!
Ray is a great host! Aside from being very accommodating with breakfast and coffee, the place (room) was comfortable and homey. It was definitely spacious enough for us. Ray's dog was nice and chill. If ever in town, I would recommend staying at Ray's place.
Made a last minute trip to Chicago, it was not easy to find an affordable/comfortable room on short notice, but luckily Ray's place was available. Saw Ray's listing, wrote him, and heard back promptly. Enjoyed the neighborhood - found parking easily within a block, block and half each time. Ray's dog Kelvin is very sweet and friendly, and Ray is even more so! Ray is an interesting, engaging, and helpful host. He steered us to a cool BBQ joint with live music and great food - it was a super... More »
Ray's place ain't pretty, and the first moment I walked in I wondered what I had gotten myself into. However, it just took a moment to realize that I had lucked out! Ray was affordable and a fantastic host. He provided breakfast for myself and the other guests, provided a wealth of information to help me navigate the city, and even walked me to the train. I'd stay with him again if I could!
I can only report that Ray is a wonderful host and Chicago a great city. Ray was helpful to a fault, lent my a bike, supplied answers to my questions and stuffed me full of cinammon rolls (not literally, I mean he cooked some). It was Midwestern welcome in the best sense. The apartment itself is located near to the all-important blue line El, which runs 24-7, which is a short walk or even better bike ride. The neighbourhood is safe as were virtually all of those I visited in Chicago apart... More »
Ray was a great host. We were on short notice before and he had responded within an hour and was very assertive in cooperating when we could meet-up to pick up keys/check in. He also gave us an amazing overview of the neighborhood and good places to check out for food and entertainment. His pup was very awesome and loving, and we have some great conversations with Ray as well !
Ray and Kelvin (his doggie) were amazing hosts. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and Logan Square was a fantastic neighborhood to stay in. I would certainly stay with Ray again!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Ray's, great location, friendly Ray and friendly dog.
My first experience with Airbnb was a success thanks to Ray: helpfull and friendly, everything went smoothly. The neighborhood is calm and nice. Accessing downtown is easy.
I really enjoyed my stay with Ray. The bedroom was very nice. Ray was a great host and very helpful when I couldn't find anywhere to park. The bathroom needs some work, but Ray knows that. I definitely recommend staying with Ray. Kelvin is a great pup.
I just stayed with Ray and it was a wonderful experience. Ray, his housemate, and his lovely dog were absolutely delightful and most gracious hosts. The price is hard to beat. Ray gave me some solid recomendations of places to eat around the area and it helped me to broaden my experience in Chicago. I'm most glad I stayed. Plus, the money I saved on not renting a hotel gave me more money to spend at the stores on Michigan Ave.
Ray is cool. His dog is cool. The room is cool. Cool? Cool. My gf and I stayed with Ray on a weekend vacation to Chicago and definitely enjoyed our stay. Every morning we woke up to a tray of freshly baked cinnamon buns, fruit, vegetables and a french press of strong coffee which was something we weren't expecting. You can tell Ray genuinely loves being a host and the adventure of meeting all types of people coming through his door. He's also knowledgable about local,... More »
Ray hosted me and my boyfriend for two nights in one of his two rooms and we had a pretty good stay, He welcomed us by helping us to carry our heavy bags upstairs and by offering us a glass of wine! We found a small comfortable room with a double bed and clean towels. The two nights were quiet, personally I think it is a good area. He also offered us cakes he made himself the first morning with a cup of coffee! Ray was a very helpful and generous host.
Needed a place to stay in a pinch, Ray was cool!
It is a good value in a good location, and Ray is very welcoming and accommodating. The room is basic -- a comfortable bed, a kitchen table type wooden chair, TV with broadcast channels reception. The bathroom has good water pressure, but is very cluttered, old-fashioned, and could be cleaner.
the bathroom was dirty and clogged, i couldn't take a shower without my shoes. The kitchen was very very dirty. The dog peed in the kitchen and no one has cleaned. After that i got sick and i left the room before the term and i lost $45 but I do not regret having gone. The neighborhood is not safe the night...
Excellent place to stay at.ray is a great host and it really feels like home.nice comfortable bed and clean house.top guy to stay with and has the coolest dog ever too.highly recommend staying here.
Ray is a great host, very helpful and full of interesting stories and knowledge of the Chicago area. The room is small but comfortable, the location is relatively safe. It is a bit of a trek to the nearest subway, (11 blocks i think) but if your ok with a walk then its great value. Other people have mentioned cleanliness, yes it is not an immaculate apartment but neither do i expect it to be. If you need pristine here is not for you, if you are capable of living in Hostel (not hotel) type... More »
I wouldn't stay here again and wouldn't recommend the place. The bathroom was very dirty and was not cleaned for the whole week I was there. The room itself was fine, but the apartment in general was run down and messy. I'm not an especially fussy person, usually stay in hostels etc. But this place was really not worth the money i paid. One evening i was locked out, banging on the door to get in. I left a day early and Ray made it difficult to get a refund even though I had given 2 days... More »
Was in a nice quiet residental neighbourhood. Ray is very friendly and extremely helpful as a host. For getting around to the rest of Chicago it is fairly well placed for the price. I did not regret this rental in the slightest it was pretty cool all around.
Ray is really down to earth guy. I stayed with him for Lollapalooza and had the best time of my life! Ray helped my friend and I get acquainted with the city and CTA upon arrival. We enjoyed our room found it to be a very comfortable environment. Oh, and by the way, he probably has the quietest street in Chicago. Highly recommend Ray for your Airbnb experience.
Ray is a great host. He responded quickly when you need to get in touch with him. The house was ok, dog hair all around. That area was mediocre for me. I got looked at and whistled a lot. I don't like it at all. Since lots of Mexicans live in that area and I'm an Asian traveling on my own, maybe I looked like alien! However, if you are not concerned about this, Ray's place is a good choice. It's pretty convenient to get around the town. walk just few minutes to a bus stop and connect to... More »
All in all, great stay. We arrived very late on the first night slept in a lot then left the next day so we didn't have much conversion with Ray or his housemate. Room was pretty humid the little fan next to the bed helped, pretty quiet neighbourhood so could leave the window open at night. Thanks again
The bedroom was clean and the host was nice and respectful, didn't mind me coming in late, gave me some coffee in the morning, fun to talk to, but not pushy or nosey.
Overall Ray is a very good host. He picked me up from the metro station and had new bed sheets waiting for me. However, if you need a room during summer, consider a place with an AC.. I only spent one night out of a reserved two because I could get no sleep; I dripped sweat the entire night! For the record, this is not a complaint; merely something to consider before deciding on a room..
Ray is an amicable and personable host. Very helpful, and willing to provide suggestions on places to see, eat, experience, as well as how best to navigate the city. Ray's apartment is well located for those who would like to experience Chicago without necessarily needing to keep up with the hustle and bustle of downtown. All in all, a great option for those looking for a hostel-like experience.
chill, comfy bed, ray is nice. it's dusty but who cares. true that the bathroom is gross, but ive seen worse. overall definitely stay there again - bedroom is great.
The place is pretty much exactly as advertised. Ray is super nice and extremely laid back. I didn't have any issues with cleanliness (the place is definitely lived in), although the bathroom is a bit cluttered/hard to find places to put your clothes/towels/stuff while you shower. Overall, though, it's quiet and the room is clean. If you're looking for a place to crash in between going out and about Chicago, this place is great.
This was my first experience with airBnb and it went more smoothly than expected. Ray was very helpful and kind. The guest room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was clean but a bit tired. Overall a good experience!
Great room, gracious and hospitable host and friendly dog on site!
Ray was an excellent host! He was extremely communicative, easy to get ahold of, and was very accommodating to his guests. I'd definitely stay at Ray's again!
When I planned my trip to Chicago I wanted to combine buisness (2 days) with pleasure (2 weeks vacation). Except for a bump right on the start (involving problems with the key left for me when I arrived) everything went perfectly fine! I'll write in points: The place is located 15 minute walk from Logan square in an OK neighberhood- wasn't afraid to go out at night, Everyhting you'll need is within walking distance, and the El at Logan sq. is quite accesable. Your room is fine, bathroom is a... More »
We stayed at Ray's house 2 nights and it was absolutely ok! There were good connections to the city and to the airport! The house is nothing fancy but it is ok for a few nights. I think Ray is a very nice person and gives his best to make your stay comfortable. He has a very lovely dog. The kitchen and the bathroom were not that clean but as I said ok :) You should not stay at Ray's house if you expect something like a hotel, but if you try to find a cheap and nice place then you are... It was great !
It was a nice stay in Ray's house. He is a warm host. My room was good. I accessed internet through Ray's wi-fi. A final Turkish coffee chat was a favor for me.
Nice to meet Ray... he is very professional about creating a good airbnb experience
Comfortable stay with an attentive host! Not the cleanliest apartment (it's an old place) out there but you will still be relaxing. The host communicates frequently and is very helpful.
If all you want is a clean bed, with clean sheets to stay for cheap this place will work for you. Other than your room though, the unit is not clean. The washroom was also missing it's ceiling due to mold, and was usually generally very dirty, which was not helped by the other renting housemate. It's not in renting condition. Ray was very nice, helpful and easy to talk to. When we found our toilet filled with various unmentionables we told him and they were gone. Location wise, it's okay. A... More »
totally pleasant experience- Ray was cordial, helpful with directions, and was ideally hospitable.
Ray's apartment is well located in a leafy suburb of Chicago (just 30mins into centre). The room was clean and a good size with a comfy bed and TV. Unfortunately it didn't seem that Ray had cleaned the bathroom at all as there was dog-hair all over the floor and in the bath which I had to clean before showering. The bath was, as Ray explains an old-fashioned painted one which wouldn't come up sparkling white even if scrubbed clean but that wasn't the problem, it just had dog hair in it. ... More »
Ray was a great host. His knowledge of the area (and Chicago at large) made my stay in Chicago memorable. The friendly and lovable dog is a bonus. The room was clean and well-kept. The apartment is lived in but you're not staying at a hotel and I don't think my trip would've been as much fun at a bland chain hotel.
Nothing fancy and nothing to complain about. Good overall stay.
Everything was great! Helpful host, central location, and a comfy bed in an old but clean house - what more could you want? I would highly recommend, and would stay here again without hesitation.
This ad does not lie and it gives you exactly what you pay for-a bedroom with a bed and a desk in a Logan Square apartment. I slept well and connected to the internet with ease after I went into my room. Ray was a great host-accommodating,interesting and welcoming. Kelvin, the dog, was such a sweetheart and reminded me of home. I will tell you it was nice to stay in Ray's home while away from my home. Yes, the bathroom situation was somewhat awkward but if you have ever lived in a dorm or... More »
I had a very comfortable stay at Ray's during my short stay in Chicago. Great host, room, and dog! Ray was really helpful and is a down to earth guy. Couldn't ask for more as a guest. Thanks!
The bed was not too comfy and the house is old and creaky; the bathroom is not dirty but everything is very old/used. But the neighborhood is ok and at a convenient location (hispanic working class; nothing to feel threated about), and street parking was easy to find. I won't say it's a great place, but it's cheap and convenient hence a nice budget option.
The instant booking feature was a big help. Allowing us to book the night before. Ray responded quickly with any questions we had and was very helpful.
Ray is a wonderful host--just the right combination of helpfulness and privacy! The neighborhood is fantastic with lots of good restaurants and accessibility to transportation, if necessary. Also, there is a food coop within a mile. The bed was comfortable and nice to have Wifi. The down side of the stay was the mold in the bathroom and the need for an upgrade to the cleanliness in the kitchen in bathroom.
We had a two day whirlwind trip to chicago and needed a place to sleep. For $40 a night, this place was perfect and Ray was a very helpful host. We also loved his dog!
The place was as advertised. The room was clean, confortable bed, quiet place, and Ray is a helpful and cheerful host. It is well located: easy to get there from the airport using the blue rail line (metro), and is an easy ride to downtown as well.
We enjoyed our stay at Ray's. The bed was really comfortable and Ray was really friendly, hospitable, and helpful in giving us numbers for taxis and some tips for in town. Thanks Ray!
Perfect experience. I was there for only one day but it was ideal. The room was clean, the host was kind and very interesting from what little time I got to know him. And he made I nice treat of chocolate cookies in the evening. Overall good experience. I would recommend Ray's place.
Had a very comfortable stay and Ray is a great host. Very helpful and courteous..
Ray is a great host. Very accommodating and helpful. It's easy to struck up a conversation and he is very knowledgeable of the area. He stayed at his place quite a lot and probably will also in the future.
Ray picked us up from the bus station. Was a very generous host.
Excellent. My flight was delayed and I did not arrive until 2AM. Ray was up and helped me get situated. The interesting dogs and friendly accommodation were a step up over your normal hotel room.
Ray was a fantastic host. Accommodating and very pleasant, he also shared a few anecdotes of his own and of Chicago. A nice touch for foreigners wanting to know a bit more about the city. Great restaurant recommendations too. And his place is located about a 10-15 minute drive from a whole host of good restaurants. Room wise, everything was comfortable - the bed, the heater. I loved that he has a microwave and a stove so we could do a little bit of light cooking and reheating of food. His... More »
This is a great place to stay in Chicago. The room is very nice and the bed is big. The street is very quiet and close to a supermarket and a few restaurants. Plus, you'll be close to Logan Square subway station (blue line), so you can reach both the airport or downtown in a few minutes. Ray is a friendly easygoing guy who'll help you with whatever you need.
Ray was an excellent host who gave me useful tips on Chicago neighborhoods and other info. He also let me use his scanner which was quite helpful. Ray's place is ideal for laid back individuals or couples who like dogs. While there is occasionally pet dander in the common areas, all beds/sheets were clean and the towels were fresh. My WiFi reception was better in the small bedroom than the larger (queen sized) room, but others may have a different connection. Overall, I would highly... More »
Ray is a really cool guy, and gave me great advice about where to go, etc. His place is in a neighborhood that is really conveniently located close to some great coffee houses and restaurants. It is a quick ride on the blue line to get to downtown (and the airport, I believe). There are two really friendly dogs. I liked the approach of keeping the central heat slightly lower, yet comfortable (I'm guessing between 65-70° F) while providing heaters with thermostats in each room allowing each... More »
Great stay. Not SUPER close to MY hot spots in the city. But very close access to major bus routes on Fullerton and Diversey got me where I needed to go. Ray was very accommodating and helpful. Also the hispanic shipping store at the end of the block ended up being a very helpful and convenient in shipoing things home. Thanks!
Ray is a very friendly and accommodating host. He helped me out with a last minute sos for affordable accommodation after my flight was cancelled. So, it was the ideal place. As a woman who travels on her own all the time, I found the neighbourhood safe and the locals very friendly. Everything you need is there, supermarket, restaurants, bars. The subway was close enough for a good reviving walk and getting there on foot you get to experience some of Chicago's historical buildings. The... More »
We stayed for a week in October and had a great time in Chicago. Ray was out of town, but his roommates took good care of us, the dogs were easy to get along with (if you don't like dogs, don't stay here), and the room was very quiet. WIFI was provided, the whole place is not exactly luxurious, including bathroom and kitchen, but the bed was comfortable. And compared to what you pay elsewhere I would say this place is a really good deal for young travellers who want to explore the city. So... More »

It looked like a good variant, but when we arrived to Ray's apartment, we were disappointed. May be another guests had better experience... The room was good, clean and very simple. Also it will be good if commode will be empty, so guests will be able to place some clothes there. If the room was ok, but Ray's flat was very-very dirty. There were a lot of dirty dishes in the kitchen almost all time we were there, also there were dirty fridge, tables etc. We easily met a lot of... More »
It was exactly as the photo shows, Ray was very nice and a good host. You really can't reasonably ask for more.
We had a great time in Chicago! Thank you! Ray's apt is large, clean and easy to reach via public transport. His dogs are fun - you have ro love them! The neighbourhood was also amazing, lots of restaurants, bars, groceries and everything you need. Ray is a very nice and helpful person, who knows the area and is prepared very well. We liked our interesting conversations in the evenings and the amazing pancake breakfast!
Ray was such a fantastic first time experience with airbnb. We loved our stay and his knowledge about the city. Hope to visit again soon!
We had a great time at Ray's - he had heaps of suggestions about good local places to go to and where to eat and what not. His dogs were very friendly too. Thanks Ray!
Ray was a great host, really nice and really helpful. The dogs were really friendly, and getting around wasn't too bad either.
Great host! thanks
I enjoyed my brief stay with Ray. If you care to have a safe place to get some winks and a quick shower.. then get on with your day, I reccommend Ray and I'm not even a dog person.. the pets are quite friendly and the fact Ray has these 'walk-about cards' which makes planning your stay/ discovery of Chicago much more easier. Compass comes in handy too. Thanx Ray.. down to earth and very helpful.
Ray has been very helpful with directions and information on the surroundings, and on Chicago in general. Great stay that I recommend to everyone visiting Chicago!
I stayed at ray's place with my girlfriend for 5 nights and we had a great time. Ray is very nice and the apartment is well located. Not too far from the subway and in a very nice neighborhood. There is a big diversity of nice little restaurants in the area where you can have great and cheap food. Ray's apartment is the perfect place to spend a night or two in Chicago. The bed was super comfortable, the linens were clean, and Ray was a helpful and accommodating host who printed directions for us to his favorite spots nearby. The apartment is a quick drive on the freeway to downtown (though significantly longer on the side streets) and though not glamorous, a great place to stay on a budget. Thanks for a nice stay, Ray. Next time we'll plan to stay in Chicago longer!
Excellent stay. Communications with Ray prior to booking OK. He was very helpful as I was very tired from international travelling. Neighborhood seems quiet and OK. Far from CTS station, do not hesitate to take a cab from there. Female travelling alone, and all OK.
We stayed at Ray's place when we first moved to Chicago for about a week so we could find our own place. He is a great host who will leave you alone if you want it, but is always there to help and hang out when you want that too. He always provided coffee for us in the morning which is very important to us and we really appreciated ;). Public transportation is nearby and it's a fun area. Would definitely stay again!
We had a wonderful stay with Ray! He (and the adorable dogs) are fantastic hosts!

Ray's place was wonderful. There are two adorable dogs, both who are super friendly and cuddly. The room itself was nice. There was a single bed with freshly laundered sheets and blankets. In addition, there was access to free wifi internet. I am kind of quirky, so I did not ask for much. I was in a real pinch, and Ray came through big time. If you're in a pinch, or if you just need some place to crash, rest assured, you can trust this guy. Thanks Ray! I really appreciate your hospitality.
I had a great time at Ray's. He is easy going, and so are the dogs. His place is quiet. It's a bit far from the metro and a bit far from downtown, but I walked from the metro every night between 10 pm and midnight with no problems. It's a safe and quiet neighborhood. I would stay there again.
I had a wonderful stay. Ray is very friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommand a stay at his place.
Ray is a great, helpful host. Location is fine and the price can't be beat. Thanks for a great stay!
My boyfriend and I stayed in the double room. It was comfortable and tidy (except for a few dog hairs - Ray has 2 dogs, who were both quite sweet). His place is a bit of a walk from the metro station, but you could always hop on a bus if you didn't want to walk. Our arrival was very last minute, and Ray was very accommodating. He always replied promptly to my e mails and texts. He even offered to make us breakfast on Sunday morning!
Great stay! Ray was an incredibly helpful host! Thank you very much for everything, Ray!
Awesome stay!! I had a complicated itinerary but he worked with me. Coffee and pancakes the first morning there. I was bouncing around town all weekend but he was understanding of the nature of my visit which was to have a blast. TY RAY!!! Aww one thing he didn't mention is that he dogs are the sweetest, watch out for Baxter he'll sneak off with you pancake if you aren't looking=)
Ray is a really laid back and easy going host. I surfed with him over New Years and had a great time visiting with other guests and his dog. Nice area...well-kept...only good things to report :)
