consultants (semi-retired)
The apartment is on the ground floor of the home of an art consultant and attorney in the Potrero Hill District. A West Highland Terrier is in residence, but is restricted to the owner’s quarters. The owners have been San Francisco residents for 25 years and can make suggestions for enhancing your stay. They are totally respectful of the privacy of their renters, and are seeking responsible mature in attitude people.
Gae and Mel have a true knack for hospitality, and went out of their way to ensure the comfort of our stay. Their place is what truly makes Airbnb a unique travel experience! If you ever dreamt of living in an art gallery, this is the place for you.
February 2012Relocated to the San Francisco area so we stayed with Gae and Mel for 1 month. The location is very good and close to some food stores. Also, if you have a car street parking is a breeze. Gae and Mel were awesome hosts and I would recommend anyone to stay here. The space on a separate floor so it feel very private... and yes, lots of art. Very accommodating and pleasant stay.
I booked Gae's listing on short notice during a trip to San Francisco for work/holiday party. She was very quick to respond and probably the most accommodating host I've dealt with to date. Gae made arrangements for me to check in on my own, as she was out of town during my stay. Everything about her home is amazing. The art seems to go on for days and each piece is unique and intriguing. My only regret is that I couldn't stay longer. However, this is my new favorite home in San... More »
Gae was the most gracious host! The place is absolutely amazing and the art is beautiful! Every step around the house there is something awesome to see! Words cannot really describe the experience you are able to have while staying at this amazing home in Portrero Hills. If you are ever in the San Francisco area I recommend getting in contact with Gae and spending your stay at her home :)
This place is beautiful. Filled with art, and in a quiet family neighbourhood with great views throughout Potrero Hills over the city. There are some nice local restaurants not too far to walk too. The hosts, Gae & Mel were so generous, and willing to give any info to make my stay a most excellent one. They live upstairs, and its the same entrance, but you have your own bathroom. I think it is a more convenient place to stay if you have a car, as I did spend a lot of time catching the Muni,... More »
I was in San Francisco on business for three days / two nights, and the stay at Gae's place in Potrero worked very well. Coordination and logistics were super smooth. Gae and Mel are very friendly and hospitable! We discovered that we had all attended the same university at various points. In addition to the separate room and bathroom on the first floor, the place includes use of a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, etc. With a Whole Foods just a couple blocks away, this is super... This place blew us away. We saw all the pictures and they simply do not do it justice. There's a ton of art, but it never feels junky or overwhelming. My girlfriend and I just sat down in our the and looked around for about 30 minutes, just taking everything in. We couldn't ask for a more quintessential experience for our time in the city. The Shulman's were extremely accommodating and it's in a beautiful part of the city close to transit.
All I can say is...WOW. Gae and her husband were wonderful hosts and their place is absolutely gorgeous. You will have one spacious whole floor to yourself, which is filled with various pieces of whimsical art and is light and airy. Everything was neat and tidy and the ceilings are high, which I loved. Walk up the steps the lead to the rooftop garden and you will gaze out on an amazing vista of the city. It's a feast for the eyes. Right around the corner you'll find a Whole Foods, which is... Our stay in the apartment was good. The area was quite quiet but there was good transport links a few blocks away and a few restaurants and shops within walking distance. Having some cooking facilities at the apartment (microwave, toaster, hotplate) was good as it meant we were able to save money on eating out. Recommended.
Beautiful apartment at a great rate. I would definitely stay here again. Jules, Gae's assistant, was very responsive.
Even though we didn't meet the hosts because they were away, we had good contact. Gae had left maps, info on things to see, some food and water for us. The apartment was clean and very artful, we were amazed over the art collection! The neighbourhood is nice and quiet, easy to get busses a couple of blocks away. Big grocery store near by. Great stay, and great hosts!
Fantastic place! The house feels like a modern art gallery which you can explore at your leisure. The apartment is huge and you have an entire first floor for yourself. The neighborhood is quiet and friendly, there are number of restaurants and cafes around, and Whole Foods is just a 5 min walk from the house. Gae was a wonderful host - very knowledgeable and entertaining. She was quick and thorough with answering all my initial questions via email; the booking process was quick too. I would... More »
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience. We were there for way too short of a time, but the space fit our needs to a tee. Gae and her husband extended their trust and warmth to us. Potrero is a wonderful area, easy to park, great views, and sweet little eateries. We had a great stay. Elizabeth
Gae was an excellent host, the apt is very cute, you are in a museum of modern art, a wonderful place to stay. super clean, quiet, well maintained and in a great neighborhood with very good restaurants and coffee shops. it was our first experience with airbnb and we were completely impressed. It was very kind of Gae to leave us snacks, milk, coffee, delicious tea and a bottle of italian spumante. Gae gave us great suggestions for San Francisco and she was very interested in our happiness.... More »
Great place to stay! We really enjoyed the beautifully decorated and private accommodations. Gae offered many helpful suggestions for the San Francisco area and was very welcoming. We found it easy to navigate the public transportation in and out of the city.
Very cool house with very accommodating people. They went out and got us copies of the local weekly papers, gave us tips on the neighborhood, and were generally very pleasant. They were pretty much out of our way after we checked in, but I'm sure they would have been available to us if we needed anything. Highly recommended.
My whole experience was excellent. When I wrote asking about this place, Gae answered right away, and my reservation was completed very fast. During the two weeks before my arrival we communicated a couple of times and she was very helpful with information on how to get there. I was not disappointed after I arrived. Gae and her husband are wonderful hosts. The place is very comfortable, big room, nice bed (even though it is a sofa-bed), Very well organized with all I needed to make my... More »
The host canceled my reservation 44 days before arrival.
My husband and I stayed here long term, and it was like living in an art gallery with an eccentric aunt & uncle. We had a large room decorated toe to tip with fascinating art pieces in interesting mediums. In the hallway we had a kitchenette and our own bathroom, even a desk and TV, so it's like an apartment although not totally separate. On sunny days, the back patio (also chock-a-block with neat art) is the perfect place to have breakfast. Our hosts were friendly and accommodating and... More »
I should actually leave a very negative feedback for this apartment, to make sure no one will book it in periods when I will be in San Francisco, so it can be mine again!!! :-) Definitely a wonderful experience. Everything was perfect, I highly recommend this apartment. Unlike other offerings available for San Francisco, in this apt you basically have the ground floor all for you, with a private bathroom. Moreover, the neighborhood is great, wonderful SF view and just 5 minutes by car... More »
Gae's apartment is fantastic and she was a gracious host. There is plenty of space and privacy since you basically have your own floor to yourself. I would definitely recommend this apartment to other AirBnBers.
My girlfriend and I had an amazing time staying in Gae and Mel's home in Potrero Hill. I had arrived earlier in the day and was waiting for my girlfriend to show up, and so I found myself overlooking san francisco on their amazing back patio with the sun on my back and a beer in my hand. Gae was very energetic and fun to be around, and gave me a wonderful tour of their home, which happens to be entirely covered in amazing art and ceramic pieces. I briefly met Mel who was equally as nice... More »
Gae & Mel were a pleasure to stay with and the house was absolutely wonderful! Potero Hill was a great neighborhood, definitely recommend walking down 18th to some great small restaurants. Wish I could have stayed a little longer. Thanks again Gae!
The Potrero Hill neighborhood is remarkable. The views of downtown from the hilltops are some of the best in the city. If you stay here, be sure to venture down Vermont street between 20th & 22nd. It isn't as good looking as Lombard street but it is technically more crooked and there wont be any lines waiting to drive down it. There is a Whole Foods right around the corner where you can get fresh pastries and coffee for breakfast, save money and eat a tasty breakfast before heading downtown.... More »
Having just drove six hours to park in a spot right out front was a great indicator of how ideal our weekend would be. Upon walking in, we were greeted by Gae with an enthusiasm and charm that continued for the duration of our stay. We were, of course, very taken with the large art collection that decorated the first floor level of the home. They have a wonderful collection and I love that they share it through Airbnb. It should be noted that the owners live upstairs but the bottom floor... More »
Mel and Gae are a lovely couple and their house is very convenient for access to San Francisco. You'll enjoy living for a short while in an art gallery!
Gae and her husband are very interesting and passionate people. Meeting them was a delight, and they know San Francisco like the back of their hands.
The apartment is in a great location, you get a real sense of neighbourhood here. Gae is positively charming and very helpful. All in all we had a great stay in San Francisco, we hope to visit again soon!
what a wonderful experience & Hostess. I give her a five star. Loved the location and the feeling of her space....Wow.
Gae was very responsive and friendly when I picked up the keys from her before my stay. She gave me a great tour of the apartment and there was a lot of gorgeous and unique art all over! The location is a bit tough for getting into the heart of the city (in case it's your first time to SF), but I was able to take the 10 or 22 bus most places or call a taxi, no problem. I think I misunderstood how the house would be arranged as the floor was definitely private, but the owners were upstairs... More »
I had a wonderful time staying here, Gae was extremely friendly when i met her to pick up the keys and gave me a nice tour of the apartment. The apartment was decorated from wall to wall with art which gave it quite a unique feel. It was not overly done though, every piece seemed to fit well together. Also the location was great, plenty of restaurant options and groceries as well.
This art filled apartment will allow you to see another side of San Francisco that many people don't get to see. Potrero - a true neighborhood off the beaten path with lovely views of downtown from Gae & Mel's garden, is in a section of this wonderful city that will make you feel like a resident, not a visitor. Be sure to check out 18th where many great restaurants are as well as the park at the top of Vermont St. All other areas accessible by public transport but if you have a car even... More »
Wow, what a treat to stay in a place where every object is so passionately considered, from the art on the walls to the little details like the bathroom towel rack. We were initially hesitant to rent a space with a "sofa bed" but we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was more comfortable than our bed at home! One of our favorite things was spending our mornings in the lovely back garden having coffee (which was delicious)...and what an incredible view of the city! Though we didn't... More »
Where do I begin about Gae and Mel? Maybe from the beginning as they were my first experience with airbnb. From Gae,'s first call to me she made me feel like part of a community [which I am finding airbnb to be] she was very friendly and so imformative on the phone that I felt I had known her long before. She followed up and kept me informed of their travels plans, arrival time etc. that by the time they arrived I trully felt you were greeting friends. Meeting Gae and her great husband... More »
October 2011Gae and her husband were wonderful guests, quiet and respectful of the property.
I loved hosting Gae and Mel!! If only I had half their joie de vivre. Apartment was in great order. I look forward to visiting them in San Francisco!
