We had a delightful stay at French Philly. Susan and Sam are superb hosts, offering advice on where to go in the neighborhood and thinking of everything we might need to feel at home. Their home is wonderfully well situated, near bars, cafes, tea shops, restaurants and public transit. We were only staying for a night--a not too far from home vacation--but wish we could have stayed longer!
January 2012A perfect stay for only one night, with little notice to a gracious and thoughtful Susan. She was very helpful in suggesting and directing us to a very cool restaurant in the neighborhood. Both Sam and Susan were pleasant and considerate, as well as open about sharing their vast experiences traveling to France. We can't wait to go back!
My husband and I have been going to Philadelphia to visit our son for about ten years and our stay at French Philly was by far the best in all that time. It's a rare person who can make you feel instantly at home and welcome while at the same time respecting your privacy and space. They were generous and exceptional hosts. Besides perfect accommodations, we also loved the neighborhood with its excellent restaurants and cafes all within an easy stroll. We highly recommend it and intend French... More »
Susan and Sam are two of the most warm-hearted people on the planet. Staying at French Philly was a wonderful experience, one that will only enhance your time in Philadelphia. They truly go above and beyond at every turn. Your room is generously spaced, before you even consider you have an entire floor to yourself. The breakfast is probably the healthiest one you'll have eaten in a long time. The location of French Philly makes it easy enough to make it into the city on foot, by bus, or on... More »
I initially chose Susan and Sam because of their French connection, but it turns out they know plenty about England too - they had a variety of loose leaf tea to offer me, and made it complete with teapot, tea cosy and strainer... unless you are a Brit away from home you probably won't understand how much that means to me! They were really friendly, a pleasure to talk to and get to know a little, and very helpful with advice, directions, maps, bus timetables, etc... it's not a centrally... More »
Sam and Susan live in a charming house in a charming neighborhood. Every block around their house seems to have a park or a public garden. Coffee shops and artistic retail blend well with real people who live here. Susan and Sam provided me with everything I needed and more. An umbrella and some homemade potato leek soup come to mind. You will not be disappointed and you will remember your trip far longer than the one you might have spent in a beige hotel room.
This is the place to stay if you want a relaxing visit to Philadelphia. Sam and Susan are wonderful, and very interesting, hosts. The whole second floor of a three story house is yours, complete with TV and internet. The bedroom is a corner room, so there is plenty of light and air. The bathroom has a very unique and interesting sink, and the shower and bath towels are excellent. The continental breakfast includes fruit, cereal, bread, coffee and tea, and is very adequate. In good... More »
I had a lovely time staying with Susan and Sam. They have great stories and tons of helpful suggestions about what sights to see and where to eat. I'd be delighted to stay with them again the next time I'm in the Philadelphia area.
Wonderful European-style B&B hospitality in a vibrant neighborhood of Philadelphia. Delicious breakfasts. Accommodations very comfortable with great reading material.
I enjoyed my stay at Susan & Sam's place in Norther Liberties. It's a vibrant neighborhood with lots of nice cafes and restaurants. Susan & Sam are very cool hosts. They showed me the place upon arrival and helped me with restaurant suggestions on a couple of nights. They have a great living room and it def. felt like home away from home.
I was in Philly for a short business trip and was looking for something more interesting than a standard hotel. Susan & Sam were perfect, they live in an interesting neighborhood and were able not only to give me good local tips, but also keep me company! The room is nice and the whole stay worked out great.
Sam & Susan were excellent hosts. The accommodation was clean & comfortable and close to attractions. Their advice was helpful and they were very sociable. They come highly recommended. Dennis & Heather (Sydney, Australia)Not
Sam & Susan provided an extremely homy hospitality. They have a beautiful house with a french theme. The neighborhood of French Philly is the new up and coming artsy / trendy area. I enjoyed the Piazza... less than a minute walk from their door step.
Sam and Susan are great hosts. The space is furnished beautifully and full of things that represent their interests. Since they like the same things we do, we felt right at home. The bed room was comfortable, spacious and clean, but a bit noisy if you aren't used to city sounds. The sitting room adjacent had bookshelves overflowing with interesting titles. Owners were so gracious and helpful to us. Would highly recommend this air bnb destination.
Great location, great accommodations and great hosts! My wife and I were very pleased with all aspects of our stay with Susan and Sam. We highly recommend them for anyone looking to stay in the heart of Northern Liberties.
Susan and Sam are consummate hosts. I could not have asked for a better experience from any BnB. My only reservation before booking was whether it was too far from center City. However, it is so well located! it is steps from Piazza and LIberty Steps as well as some of the hottest spots in Northern Liberties. I will definitely stay with Susan and Sam again for business and pleasure. It feels like a warm home.
We had a fantastic stay in Philadelphia, not only were Susan and Sam great hosts but they were great people as well, had some lovely chats with them. Their house is also in a very cool area of Philadelphia, with heaps of amazing places to eat and shop, it felt very safe and was easily accessible by bus.
It as wonderful to stay with Susan and Sam--they were wonderful hosts with a great home. We had great conversations and they were so helpful in helping us find our way around the area with amazing food recommendations! Next time I am in Philadelphia I will be back!
We really enjoyed our stay at French Philly. Susan and Sam were gracious and considerate hosts, making sure we had everything we needed. They offered advice about where to go in the neighborhood, provided directions on how to get back to the highway, and were generally very helpful and pleasant. The house is beautiful and interesting, and our accommodations were spacious and comfortable. The house is in a great neighborhood with lots of nice restaurants and shops and a small park that was... Sam and Susan are great hosts. Very warm and sincere and really care about their home. We had a great time staying there and enjoyed their company. We had the 2nd floor to ourselves and a nice sized room. I highly recommend them.
this is the, is better than being a luxury hotel! Everything clean, royal breakfast .... susan and sam are two angels ;)
Very nice stay. Convenient location. Nice hosts.
above and beyond everything i expected. we felt not only immediately welcomed to their house, but also like part of their family.
My husband and I loved French Philly and Susan and Sam were such gracious hosts - they have inspired us to get our home ready to host through airbnb.
This was our first airbnb stay and we were a little apprehensive going in Our hosts Susan & Sam were amazing... very welcoming and extremely accommodating. If we could have hosts like this everywhere we go we'd never stay in another hotel. It's a sweet house in a "hip" neighborhood - we had our own floor with a living room, a bedroom with a very comfortable bed and a private bath. We were treated like we were old friends... If you're going to Philadelphia don't pass up the opportunity to... More »
Susan and Sam are very friendly hosts who have created a little oasis in a quirky artsy neighborhood on the outskirts of downtown Philly. They mix a perfect amount of hospitality and warmth to give travelers a welcome change from chain hotels. We were in town to perform a concert down by the water (Penn's Landing) and, despite Susan's warnings of the sketchy neighborhood north (?) of them, we walked home afterwards. Like a concerned mom, she waited until we got home and had delicious... More »
Great location great hosts
Sam and Susan are great hosts, very open and friendly. We enjoyed our time there very much.
We had an awesome stay with Susan and Sam! French Philly is a very pretty house in Northern Liberties, the coolest part of Philadelphia that you would for sure not visit if you stay at a hotel. Surrounded by restaurants, cool shops, pedestrian streets... loved it. However the best part of our stay was getting to know Susan and Sam, super sweet couple, a well of culture and great stories about anything you can imagine. If you are going to Philadelphia you HAVE TO stay at Susan and Sam's
i stayed here for 6 nights....after arriving very late on the first night....and the gish's made my stay enjoyable and easy. the backyard garden was wonderful and i enjoyed walking to the neighborhood resturaunts. tho the gish's pay very close attention to security, i felt very comfortable walking alone in the neighborhood at 10/11 PM. the accomodations are "real", making it feel that much more like home than a sterile hotel room....especially for a longer stay like the one i had. i... Had a wonderful time with Susan and Sam. Their thoughtfulness was a delightful suprise and very much apprciatted. The second floor accommodation was spacious and comfortable. Enjoyed the ten minute walk to the subway and the near resturaunts and shops.
French Philly is a unique place - very hospitable and interesting hosts, delightful decor - both whimsical and elegant. The house is in a very lively neighborhood - very urban, with lots of architecturally interesting and creative rehabbing going on. Easy to walk to great restaurants, boutique shopping, art - and even easier to take the bus into Center City - it goes right past the door.
The host canceled my reservation 14 days before arrival.
The Gish's are truly pioneers to what really is becoming a beautiful and classic neighborhood. Their house is beautiful, welcoming and I could hardly make myself leave every morning to go and see the neighborhood and the city. To paraphrase their helpful and worthy recommendations page: "When in Philly...Forget Philly Cheese Steaks - staying at the Gish's is the real deal!" My highest recommendations, Asaf.
Comfortable, clean and friendly. Susan and Sam were wonderful hosts and shared their home, humor and food with me. I highly recommend this home to anyone that travels for a living as an oasis away from the hotel scene.
Sam and Susan were fantastic! They went above and beyond from the moment we first arrived - pouring us two glasses of wine after a harrowing trip to Philly to our 5am departure that included a bagged breakfast waiting in the fridge. Their home is both charming and sophisticated and located in a dynamic part of town - An apt reflection of our hosts.
I adored my recent stay in "FrenchPhilly." Sue and Sam are fun, intelligent, and well-travelled hosts, and my room on the second floor of their lovely, three-story home in funky Northern Liberties could not have been cozier. Sue was super forthcoming with all the information I needed (and more) about public transportation, vegan restaurants, etc., and when I arrived, wiped out from a long journey and a longer conference, she made me a cup of "lemon verbena" tea that sent me right to sleep. I... More »
Susan and Sam made my stressful day fade away with their attentiveness, tremendous taste, and lovely conversation. These are good people - stay with them. Merci, mes nouveaux amis!
It was great pleasure to stay at French Philly with such a great host. Susan and Sam would be the most helpful and supportive host you have ever meet. Location, room condition, food were all the best. You will never regret it.
Great BNB! The hosts are very welcoming. The space and location are wonderful. Highly recommended!
I could not have asked for friendlier hosts. Thank you.
Lovely people, great space. It was a nice place to relax and Susan and Sam were very generous in letting me use their home as a work base for a day before I flew out of Philadelphia. The neighborhood is upwardly mobile, but not all the way there yet, and there are plenty of food options nearby. My only minor disturbance was the street noise from buses, which was amplified by the weather conditions when I was there. Again it was minor, but persistant. I would however, certainly stay with Susan... More »
Susan and Sam were incredibly helpful and informative. The neighborhood that they're located in is a cool and eclectic place. The apartment itself was amazing and the bed was really comfortable. If you have any questions do not hesitate to ask Sam and Susan; they were excellent hosts. I would certainly stay there again.
Susan and Sam were great! Really hospitable folks! Enjoyed hearing about the interest in food, wine and travel. The neighborhood is REALLY neat - a lot of great shops and restaurants. Thanks for a great stay!
Sam and Susan are wonderful people--friendly and welcoming. The house is as advertised--an homage to all things French. I would recommend staying with them.
French Philly at the Gish's home is a pleasure. The home is spacious and comfortable. It is filled with interesting art and fascinating books. The kitchen though small is the fancy activity zone of a pair of gourmet's. Beautiful. My breakfasts were delicious. Eat the yogurt! It's a one of a kind from their local farmer. The neighborhood is nice with cool restaurants in very quick walking distance. There's a yummy old school Kosher bakery down the street. Bus and subway took about 15... More »
Extremely kind and helpful couple, who provided us with clean and comfortable sleeping arrangements. Their beautiful home has a great deal of character and is located in the coolest/hipest "nontouristy" area of Philly that we saw during our stay. When visiting Philly the Gish house should be everyones first choice.
Susan and Sam are your guarantee to a warm and welcome stay in Philadelphia.I had a great time during my stay with them. They are such a great and lovely hosts, very kind, friendly and thoughtful. There is everything you need at that place. Very comfortable stay. Great location. The room was nice, the bathroom nice, very clean and the Internet worked great. Had a wonderful experience staying with Susan and Sam at their charming home in Philadelphia. Have already suggested this as a weekend getaway to family and friends living in the area, and extend the recommendation to anyone who is considering booking.
The Gish place was a really excellent place to stay. Both hosts were very helpful and acomadating, and gave us GREAT selections on where to go and what to see. We loved their place and their neighborhood. Would love to come back again. Best, Lisa
French Philly is a beautiful property right in the hippest neighborhood of Philadelphia, Northern Liberties. The house is clean and well-decorated, and has a gorgeous back yard. The private room is huge and air conditioned and you basically have the entire floor of the house to yourself. The hosts are gracious and interesting and clearly know how to show hospitality to others! Top notch.
Susan and Sam were first rate hosts, considerate and thoughtful, and easy and interesting to talk to. We were very comfortable and made to feel welcome and at home. They gave us lots of useful suggestions as to how best to get about and where to eat in the neighbourhood. It was an ideal location from which to explore historical Philadelphia. The surrounding area was exciting, vibrant and very much an up and coming neighbourhood. It was a treat to find a stables nearby (for the tourist... More »
My experience with the Gishes was terrific. Susan was very responsive to my emails, which helped because I was pretty last minute with my plans. The room was equipped with an air conditioner and mini fridge, and the bed was quite comfortable. Their back patio area (near the incredible wine mosaic wall) was the most relaxing, beautiful little nook to eat breakfast. Breakfast, I might add, included fresh figs from their yard (!) and homemade bread (!!). The Gishes were extremely helpful in... More »
Susan and Sam were wonderful hosts, they made me feel very welcome and it felt like I was staying with friends. Its a good part of town to stay in - trendy; cafes, bars, restaurants close by and you can walk easily into the old town and the city centre, or take the bus. My bedroom was comfortable, spacious and my own bathroom too. Thankyou
Susan and Sam have made me a believer of airbnb! This was my first stay using the site, and it was truly enjoyable. If you want to be in a convenient location to explore the city, French Philly is the place. We (my boyfriend and I) went all over and walked 97% of it. The accomodations were comfortable, very private and a good size for the value. Our hosts were so helpful (getting us a fan to make us at home, a pitcher of water, and insisting we stay for breakfast on the last morning- and... More »
Our visit was very short (just overnight), but the neighborhood and space were great and we had a wonderful early morning conversation with our hosts. Had so much in common and would like to come back and spend more time!
We have just returned to Scotland and have lovely memories of our stay with Susan and Sam who were very welcoming, understanding, and made us so comfortable. Their home is delightful and in a great location and we would thoroughly recommend the French Philly. Encore une fois - merci a tous les deux. Joyce and John Kelly
Staying with Susan and Sam was a great experience! They are friendly, warm, and just fun to talk with about all sorts of topics. The location of their place is an awesome place to jump into any part of the city and their neighborhood is a delight to explore. I would stay there again any time I was in Philadelphia!
Staying with Susan and Sam was an absolute pleasure for my weekend in Philadelphia. They have a wonderful home in a very bright and cozy neighborhood or north east Philly. If you like to cook, their kitchen will be your best friend. Wonderful hosts all around and thank you for the chance to stay at your chateau in the city!!!
We can only echo what everyone has said already: We had a great experience staying with Susan and Sam. Very comfortable accommodations, nice location surrounded by nightlife, and very engaging, lovely hosts. We hope they can visit us in Washington down the road. Kip & Liz DC Rowhouse
We had a wonderful time with Susan and Sam over the weekend. They have a lovely home and were very welcoming. We highly recommended them, their room, their cats, and their neighborhood. Philly was pretty awesome: we will be back. P.S. Get the cheesesteak at By George in the Reading Terminal Market, with wild mushrooms like Ben Franklin used to make them.
We had a wonderful, relaxing stay at the Gish's. Great neighborhood, comfortable room, thoughtful and welcoming hosts, delicious breakfast. Highly recommended.
We had a great stay and are definitely recommending French Philly to friends. S + S were extremely welcoming and generous hosts, the place is charming and warm (with an entire floor to yourself), and we loved the neighborhood.
I had a wonderful stay at the Gish home. They are very welcoming and made my stay in Philly easy and fun. Their home is an easy walk to Spring Garden subway station, which made everything in the city within easy reach. I would love to come again soon (on a less rainy weekend)!
My husband and I had a wonderful time staying with the Gish's. We loved their comfy french-style house, and their warm hospitality. Have dinner at the Standard Tap, it's a classic pub close to their house. The area where they live is cool, arty and chilled out. It's a 15 mins walk to historic district. Thanks S & S, hope to visit you again.
Very close to the subway and the immediate area is quite charming. They were very welcoming and warm. Thanks for the great stay!
had a really nice time staying with the gish's. warm, down to earth, and fun to converse with. their place is well situated in northern liberties which has so much to do. for better or worse, its the williamsburg of philly. so many bars and restaurants and boutiques, you could spend your whole time in this area.
des personnes très agréables avec qui nous avons pu beaucoup échanger un réel plaisir
December 2011Susan & Sam were great guest, left the the guesthouse just how they found it, and was very pleasant and nice to deal with!
All things Gish rock! What can I say? Intellectually stimulating...nice, super neat, and tidy...all around good people. You would be lucky to stay with them...or the other way around! Thanks for staying with us and hope to see you again soon...I think we may need to visit "French Philly" very soon! Cheers.
Wow, the Gishes are wonderful guests, indeed. Appreciate, full of really interesting stories, and just a general joy to have in our house. Lucky the host who hosts them . . . Claudia Conlon
Susan was great! Would love to have her again in my place. She also kept the apartment very neat. Thanks Susan!!
