Hi there,
My name is Sheila. I am a self employed, entrepreneur. I spent my first 20 years in Portland building small neighborhood bars & restaurants. I have a charming 13 year old girl who is a great student, an excellent goalie and a great helper to me. We both enjoy people and love hosting events and guests. It has really been a pleasure to meet the people that have stayed with us both at the Buckman Guest House (where we live on the main floor in our own flat) and the 16th Avenue Walk Ups, my funky but fun boarding house around the corner. If you're coming to Portland, we'd love to have you come and stay with us anytime.
Happy and safe travels to you and yours.
Sheila
Sheila was incredibly welcoming and sweet! The location of this place is really convenient in Portland, plus there was plenty of parking and the bus was easily accessible. The place was clean and organized and there was never an issue with the shared spaces. I think my only issue was that the place/building was old and it was making me sneeze.
February 2012Wonderful place to stay! Great host, excellent location, and charming house.
This was the perfect accommodation for my vacation to Portland. My friends and I enjoyed having a comfortable space in which to spend time during our vacation. We particularly liked being able to make our own meals in the kitchen.
Sheila is one of the most lovely people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Her hospitality and quick response to any questions or problems (no matter how trite) is something to be admired and adored. The place was absolutely charming and cozy and in a perfect location. I would and have recommended 16th ave Walk-Ups to anyone. I felt safe secure and completely at home. I wish there where more stars to give. Just a wonderful experience.
My husband and I stayed here while in town visiting our daughter and grandson. The apartment was perfect for us: comfortable, colorful, spacious and light (there are many large windows, offering views of the neighborhood and beyond). I felt at home at once, which allowed me to easily and happily indulge my fantasy of living in Portland! Sheila is a warm, delightful person and an attentive, thoughtful host. She was so sweet to my little grandson! I highly recommend Buckman Guest House.... More »
Peaceful, Beautiful, Fabulous location, Sweet host, Comfortable, Spacious, Cozy, Lovely! THANK YOU!
We absolutely loved our stay! It really made our Christmas trip special. Sheila was a gracious host, and we plan on staying here again when we visit family in Portland. The location is so convenient, and the apartment is charming. Thanks for everything! We will be back!
Truly felt at home. Shelia was a wonderful host!
Great location, comfortable room, very nice kitchen and living room. Though I never met Sheila she was easy to communicate with. Definitely recommend.
Incredibly friendly and helpful host! Big room, although noise travels in the house. Good shared spaces, and the other travellers I met were fascinating. Great italian place just round the corner, and also a good breakfast place too.
We were heading to Portland just for an overnight stay to see a live show. We saw this wonderfully eclectic and warm guest house, tried it out, and were not disappointed. The space is warm, inviting, and awesomely full of color. We really enjoyed meeting and chatting with Sheila, who is so welcoming, and warm. She has such a kind spirit. She gave us a fantastic breakfast recommendation, Zell's, and it was well worth our short wait! We will definitely be back to stay. Incredible... More »
We had a great time at Sheila's place. It is funky, cosy and in a great location. The kitchen was equipped with basics including food stuffs which made it easy to settle in. The street is quiet, with a few little shops & businesses close by. Hawthorne is a short walk, downtown is about 15 minutes, over the Burnside bridge. Great place, highly recommended.
I stayed in one of Sheila's rooms for 5 nights. I could adjust the heater in my room to my own comfort. The house was roomy and quiet. I enjoyed meeting the other guests who were interesting and considerate. It was great to have cooking privileges. Sharing a bathroom was never an issue.
The room was peaceful, clean, cozy and in a great location. Enjoyed the view from the windows of the Maples and Oak trees in fall color. Sheila is a wonderful host very welcoming and helpful.
Close of downtown, very nice place !
Accommodations were perfect. Way more fun than staying in hotel. Sheila could not be a better host. Highly recommend!
My recent stay featured all the wonderful accommodations that I was able to take advantage of when I first visited, including: Location close to restaurants, shopping, Free, High Speed, Wireless Internet, and a shared kitchen, living room, and balcony. It was very clean and Sheila is a wonderful host, she left farm- fresh eggs in the fridge for her guests to share, as well as coffee and toast for breakfast. Sheila makes you welcome and at home, and I would recommend staying with her if you... More »
This room is in a nice house on a tree-lined street in a welcoming neighborhood. Sheila gave me excellent instructions on how to get there and was very available and responsive. I didn't get to meet the other inhabitants of the house unfortunately, but they were quiet and the place was kept clean. The kitchen had clearly labeled foodstuffs for guests - the basics: teas, coffee, creamer, some bread, etc. The shared bathroom was clean and totally functional. As for the room itself, the bed... Sheila is one amazing host!! She made my stay truly wonderful and I would highly recommend her. While the accommodations are a tiny bit rough around the edges, the bed was comfortable, and I was surprised how quiet and peaceful the accommodations were. You can't beat the location - for me it was perfect! Thank you Sheila!!
Wanted to stay in Buckman to take a look at the neighbourhood. It was easy and convenient. Sheila was easy going and helpful. Thanks for sharing your space.
Sheila is a warm, helpful hostess. The rooms are charmingly decorated. The location is perfect, centrally located. My only complaint is that the mattress was old(er) and saggy.
We stayed in Sheila's guest house for five days earlier this month. We loved it! I was immediately taken with the charm of this rental. In keeping with the era of the home, it is furnished with lots of vintage items and antiques----but nothing "stuffy." It was comfortable and quiet, and I feel you get a lot of "bang for your buck." We'll definitely stay here again!
Sheila was incredibly accommodating in every way. The room was clean, large, and exactly as advertised. Awesome house too with a great balcony and very cool kitchen. The location is right in the middle of such a great area, it was so easy to walk to all of the brewpubs, food carts, and restaurants in the area (less than a mile to dozens of places). When I visit again, I'm staying here again.
Great host was able to get a hold of her when I arrived and checked out after I left. I let her know I had another person staying with me at the last minute and she was completely OK with it. I paid the extra fee. The place is quite charming and cozy. Very clean and definitely would stay there again!
note from my mother and uncle who stayed at sheila's house: we were really pleased with the coziness and comfort at the buckman guest house. we had an absolutely fabulous stay. sheila and addy were so friendly and helpful. we look forward to staying there again next time we are up in portland! thanks so much*
This was my first trip solo trip and first time using Airbnb.com. I was able to just drive in to the whole Portland experience head first, because this web site gave me the kind of assurance I needed. Sheila was a great host and I felt right at home. The walk-up has a charm to it that was comforting. I made use of the balcony, kitchen, and my room in that there were a couple of evenings where I opened the windows, listened to the rain, and curled up with a good book.
Great place! Huge space, very clean, and decorated in a wonderful eclectic style. Quiet, too! I slept very well both nights. Sheila is super nice as well. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it highly.
I was in Portland for the marathon this past weekend and Sheila's place was perfect. The house is in a great part of town and Sheila is a really lovely host and an equally great person. If you're looking for a cozy, welcoming place to stay this is a great option.
I was looking for a cozy place to stay during my brief visit in Portland. The walk up sounded like a perfect fit. I was not disappointed. I loved the porch and the homey feeling to the place. Sheila's hospitality was top notch! I arrived earlier than check-in time, and she met me so I could drop off my baggage and ensured I had everything I needed to know before heading out to discover this wonderful city. Thank you, Sheila. I'll be back someday, for sure.
Great place. Cosy, quiet and homely. Sheila was very helpful and accommodating. I would definitely recommend this place.
Sheila's place is cozy with a comfy bed, fast wifi and located in a charming neighborhood close to lots of restaurants, shops, bars, and breweries. The bathroom is shared with the other guests, we never had a problem with access and it was very clean. Sheila was wonderful. Our paths never crossed, so we corresponded by phone and text message. She was genuinely concerned with our happiness and the quality of our Portland experience. She recommended activities and was flexible about our... More »
Great hostess, funky/artsy neighborhood, old but very clean upper floor with plenty of room, and within easy striking distance of everything! We enjoyed our time there very much.
Everything about my stay at the 16th Ave Walk-Up was a breeze. The room was very cozy, comfortable bed, plenty of space, and eclectically decorated. The common areas were very nice as well. The location of the Walk-Ups were convenient to bus lines which made it easy to get around Portland. Sheila was a wonderfully welcoming and gracious host who was eager to make sure I had the best experience possible. I'd definitely stay here again. 5 stars.
Sheila provides very good accommodation that is quiet, organized, comfortable, clean and above all secure. I found Sheila to be highly approachable, flexible and professional in handling requests and making sure that the accommodations were completely in order to every detail. The location is very reasonable, it's only about a 15 minute bus ride or 7 to 10 minutes taxi ride into Portland downtown. I highly recommend these accommodations and would definitely choose to stay here again.
This was incredibly convenient for us to stay while were in town for a Theater Festival down the street. The room was clean and well appointed. Hostess was extremely friendly and helpful.
Sheila is incredibly welcoming and she makes herself available to provide assistance while you are in town. The room was comfy and spacious. I used the fan in the room to provide white noise and I barely heard anyone else while I was there. And the flannel sheets were perfect and a lovely surprise, as the weather was cool and rainy the weekend I visited. I'll definitely stay here again!
My girlfriend and I had a great stay with Sheila! She's really friendly, welcoming and helpful. The room is lovely and spacious, and the rest of the house is charming. The neighbourhood has a nice vibe with a couple of cafes and an amazing winery/bar where we spent most evenings. We walked to Hawthorne and Belmont every day and a bus to downtown leaves from a bus stop really nearby. We couldn't recommend it highly enough. We'll definitely be back. Thanks, Sheila!
A review can't do this room justice. It's impeccably decorated, cozy, in a fantastic neighborhood, with a beautiful common space with a deck and fully stocked kitchen. Sheila has a ton of experience hosting travelers, and it really shows: she was immediately responsive to any concern or whim of mine, and made me an extra key to her (street-level) basement to store my bike and to do laundry. Would love to live here, much less return for a short stay next time in Portland.
Sheila was such a wonderful host. The apartment close to busses and bars. Its easy to get across the river to downtown but great staying in a low-key neighbourhood. The room is romantic and a perfect size. It was great meeting Sheila and going out with her. She will help you in any way you need. I will definitely say here again!
Sheila is very friendly and her place is in a really cool neighborhood. Vegan restaurants, bars and bookshops are in walking distance. Portland is awesome!
Very comfortable rooms, (my friend and I took a room each). Sheila met me on the first night and was very welcoming and friendly. The house is very close to buses downtown and walking distance to lots of cafes and bars etc... I was there for the Time Based Arts Festival and it was literally around the corner! I would definitely stay here again when in Portland.
Shelia was a wonderful host. The place is indeed charming, with a variety of artwork decorating this older building. Shelia was very helpful and made sure I had everything I needed to explore Portland and enjoy my stay.
Terrific place, host and location. Less than two blocks away from my favorite sandwich place in Portland. Sheila was very attentive and incredibly helpful during my stay.
Overall, the stay was great. The house is in a funky, old neighborhood with big trees and lots of character. Sheila was also very friendly and responsive when I brought up issues regarding the front door lock and shower head. Problems were fixed pronto! The balcony in the tree tops was just perfect for chilling and morning coffee. Would definitely stay there again.
This was what we expected, and it did not disappoint. It is a GREAT location for walking into downtown or around the east side of the river. (You do have to like to walk though.) We would recommend this place to anyone who wants a good base to explore Portland.
Same as my feedback for apartment C. Great experience!
Very cosy house.. the balcony is a serious bonus. Will definitely stay again on future portland trips. The location is quite nice... easy to hop on buses going in every direction and has some excellent restaurants very close by.
Our stay at the Buckman house was fabulous. The location is perfect in the heart of SE, a short drive/bike/cab from just about everything. Sheila was an amazing host who immediately made us feel at home and went out of her way to ensure our stay went well. I will definitely recommend this place to friends in the future.
My husband and I traveled to Portland for the first time at the end of August. We had such a great time in the City and at the guest house. Sheila was such a gracious host. We had absolutely everything we needed to feel right at home. The guest house is in an awesome neighborhood with plenty of coffee shops, restaurants and breweries in walking distance. And for our travels into the City, it was never more than a 5 minute walk to the nearest bus stop. If we're ever in Portland again, we... More »
Sheila was a wonderful hostess! She made sure I had everything I needed for my stay in Portland. The room was charming and VERY comfortable, as was the rest of the apartment. I had a great time and would definitely stay here again!
We had a lovely stay in Sheila's guest apartment at 16th Avenue. The place is like a traditional B&B - Great bedroom with a shared bathroom down the way. I think there were a couple of residents staying full time. It's all you would want in a relaxing stay in Portland - it's in a great neighborhood with good restaurants nearby - walking distance into buses into downtown, and it's quiet. The apartment was absolutely beautiful - it was clear that great care was taken in stocking it and... More »

My girlfriend and I were traveling from San Diego to Vancouver via the 5 freeway and made a stop in Portland. Since we didn't plan ahead for anything we made the booking around 10am on the way to Portland and were lucky to find out that the Sheila had a space available. Sheila made getting into the place really simple and it was a very unique and beautiful place to stay. The bed was comfortable... More »
Sheila was a great host, knowing just when to reach out and make sure everything was right. The walk-up is on a beautiful tree-lined street, and is centrally located, convenient to everything. I appreciated the space's character, and it worked out to be a great place to stay.
Sheila was helpful and gracious. The home is well-located, convenient to lots of things to do, yet in a quiet residential neighborhood. Thanks, Sheila!
This is a really great place to stay. The house is beautiful, cozy and clean. Sheila is a lovely host who very generously has the house stocked with everything you need. Everyone should definitely stay here! Its great.
Sheila's apartment is very cute and she's a terrific host, offering her cell number in case of emergency, or if you just have questions while traveling throughout Portland. We really appreciated the awesome local coffee in the room, which kept us going after a long drive. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. The walk-ups are also in a great typically Portland neighbourhood and within walking distance of the trendy Hawthorne district. Loved the city and can't wait to be back!
Sheila is the best! We had the most amazing time in Portland, and Shelia just made us feel so at home from the very beginning. The house is simply beautiful, a really peaceful and positive space. Any questions we had Sheila was more than happy to answer. And she even lent us her bike for our stay! Highly highly recommend staying here if you are in Portland. We can't wait to go back.
Staying with Sheila was a wonderful experience, the place is well located with access to bus to downtown and train to airport. She is a beautiful person and her appartments and entire house and surroundings are friendly and welcoming. A very much appreciated vacation in Portland which is easygoing; progressive and tourist friendly.
The 16th Avenue Walk-Ups are an excellent housing alternative with a lot of character. The vibe of the house is funky-rustic and the room was quite cozy. The permanent residents were quiet and respectful, and the few vacation renters that dropped in during my stay were glad to be having the experience. Just popped in for an overnight in this warm and friendly place, my first airbnb experience. Liked the community room, bathroom and my own room was quiet and comfortable. Sheila and friends were very welcoming and personable. She has done a great job transforming the property in this cool part of Portland. I would certainly stay there again.
Sheila was lovely - the house was great, and we really enjoyed our stay. What a charming home and neighborhood. It was wonderful to have a stocked kitchen to prepare meals for us and our two-year-old instead of having to eat out all the time. The Hawthorne area is just a quick drive away (a bit far of a walk with our little one, but wouldn't have been for just us), there is a park with a great playground about a five minute walk away, and we found many local pubs to drink beer and hang out... I stayed in the Charming 16th Ave WalkUp for my first trip to Portland and had a great time. This was my first experience with AirBnB and Sheila was an excellent host. The house and bedroom was very clean, and the front porch is great for reading and relaxing! The bus stop is just a few blocks away (fast and easy to get around) and Sheila was very kind, even finding me an iron to use before my work event. I highly recommend staying at the WalkUps. Enjoy Portland!
Sheila was a wonderful host: only a cellphone call away for any potential needs but gave us as much privacy as we desired. The house is a lovely, old place, & Sheila's aesthetic is wonderful. The beds/pillows were comfortable, the towels soft, the house quiet, and the outdoor porch was the perfect place to unwind. She even had our coffee-maker ready to go for our "liquid motivation" (coming from Seattle, I'm accustomed to being able to get my coffee much earlier than the Portland cafes... More »

My friends and I just returned from a 4-night stay at the Buckman Guest House, and we had a fantastic experience. *HIGHLY RECOMMENDED* This place could not have been more comfortable! Charming, cozy, spacious, and stylish. I arrived very late on Friday night to walk into a nicely lit kitchen with soft, soothing music playing. I could not have been happier after a long, tiring day of travel. Everything was clean, tidy, and orderly. Sheila was VERY responsive to emails and questions. Sheila and her daughter were also extremely friendly and kind. Great location for my stay in Portland....
I was just there for one quick night, but it was a great place to stay and a fun neighborhood to explore.
So so amazing. We had the best time and wished we could have extended our Portland adventure for longer than 24 hours. Next time we visit this great town, we hope to stay here again! Lovely flat, decorated so wonderfully. Comfortable beds and awesome neighborhood. Sheila is an outstanding person. Fun, relaxed and completely accommodating. Highly recommended.
Sheila was wonderful and helpful. She gave us her cell and was always nearby in case we needed anything. The room was clean and the joint was quiet. The porch was great for unwinding. The perfect home base for a relaxing PDX weekend.
Sheila is a fantastic host and would encourage anyone coming to Portland to stay with her. Her home was incredibly inviting and spacious and had everything we needed. Her place is in a perfect location in SE Portland on a quiet street, but walking distance to so much the neighborhood has to offer. Highly Recommend that you stay here while visiting Portland
I arrived to Portland after five days on the road and Sheila was warm and welcoming. The room was perfect for one and I recovered well from my long journey. The house was indeed charming with a good amount of privacy while providing the opportunity to mingle with the permanent residents and other guests. The porch was lovely and it was conveniently located to good coffee shops and the bus. I would definitely stay here again.
The apartment is clean and homey. You can have your total privacy or talk with the other super friendly guests. Sheila was very helpfull. Everything ok!
Our stay at Sheila's was a great experience. The room was very clean and tidy. There is a lot of attention to detail in furniture and wall art which made it a cozy space to relax. Sheila was also very accommodating for storing our bicycles. Her house is off of a bicycle route and within minutes to downtown or the Hawthorne district. Sheila's place is a great location to explore Portland by bicycle!
The place was great! Nice location, close to a ton of bus-lines, good food, nice parks. Sheila was a great hostess and provided more that what I needed. She was always available and responsive. The room and porch were lovely and the entire house was spotless. Not the best place if you like to sleep late (sun comes in at first light), but other than that, a great place to stay!
We loved the Buckman Guest House. It was wonderful to have a place to stay that was more like home than a hotel. Sheila was so sweet and accommodating. This was our first trip to Portland and we look forward to returning again and staying at the Buckman Guest House again.
My week's stay at Sheila's place was just wonderful! The unit is spacious, quiet, beautifully decorated and in my favorite section of Portland. The pictures on the web are totally accurate, though can't fully convey the relaxed, integrated, at-home feel of the suite. Additionally, everything was sparkling clean and tidy from top to bottom. Sheila was gracious, friendly and helpful. I couldn't have had a better experience! Thank you, Sheila!
The room is on a beautiful, lushly green and quiet street, in a very fun neighborhood - we walked to all the various interesting coffeeshops and things that we wanted to visit in Portland. Sheila herself is very nice and clearly knows the neighborhood well. The only drawback is that the house itself is old and a bit run-down... our doorknob kept falling off, though Sheila fixed it as soon as we told her about it, and there's a bit of a musty smell to the whole place, and the water-pressure in... Stopped off for one night stay at this wonderful little room in east Portland. The room was ready for my arrival, clean and tidy with a lovely little note from the host. Thank you!
Room was cozy and convenient and I really liked having my own sink in the room. Sheila was helpful, open and kind.
Upon arrival, the apartment felt really comfortable. We were really excited to be able to relax like we were at home. Staying a week in the apartment was perfect for getting to know the neighborhood. I had a good stay here. Sheila is an accommodating host. I agree with all of the other reviews. One should be aware that this is a shared rental situation with likely 4 to 6 others on the same floor in other bedrooms, and as noted in another review, only one small bathroom for share (though my room had a sink in it, which was helpful). However the common areas including the bathroom are kept meticulously clean: I took several comfortable showers and used the kitchen and living room freely.... More »
I've been a long time Airbnb host, but this was my first experience as a guest. I couldn't have chosen a more wonderful host to try it out with. Sheila is lovely and hospitable, like an old friend you haven't seen in some time but are thrilled to catch up with again. The apartment itself was gorgeous and comfortable and impeccably clean; it made for a magical experience in Portland. I'm tempted to come back and live at the apartment for good. :)
Awesome! The house is awesome, much bigger than I though. Decorated well, personal touches, french press coffee, super clean, and just comfortable. In a great location, right across the street from the sweet new Enso Winery. Sheila was the star of staying here though, the space was great and I would return for that, but Sheila went out of her way to help us. We have 2 small children and she was so accommodating. We will return!
Thank you Sheila, we enjoyed our stay in Portland and would happily return to stay again. It was a cool neighborhood. Ron & Susie
Sheila was a wonderful host and the apartment was truly lovely space to be in. As you can tell from the pics Sheila has hand-picked each decoration and the place is super cozy; a home away from home for sure! The space is super functional too with a spacious kitchen and living room - and nice little table in the living room that I was able to do work at. I was traveling with my dad so having a sleeping nook separate from the bedroom was just what I was looking for. Sheila clearly gives a... More »
When my boyfriend and I walked in the front door for our weekend stay under Sheila's roof, wonderful music was playing and a sweet note wished us a nice stay at our home away from home. Sheila's 'urban cabin' was just about the perfect place for us to stay during our first visit to Portland. I say 'just about' simply because we were spending most of our time with our son and his family and so did not take full advantage of all that it had to offer. The location is fabulous, both for walking to small shops and restaurants, and to the bus system for venturing further afield. Sheila was a charming hostess and so helpful to us in our first experience with Airbnb. Thanks to... More »

Great location and wonderful apartment. We really enjoyed our stay and really hope to rent from Sheila again soon..she was a great host.
The 'Urban Cabin' was a great place to stay! Comfortable, spacious, great location- close to all my favorite SE PDX spots and to downtown. Would stay here again, and would be happy to recommend to fellow airbnb travelers.
What a great place and at a great price! Super easy to find, lots of free street parking and within easy walking distance of eats and drinks. The Thai place around the corner is great and the Doug Fir lounge and Le Pigeon Restaurant are not even a 10min walk away. We didn't get to meet Sheila but she made us feel at home with a welcome card and lots of tourist info. The apartment was spotless and had everything we needed - highly recommended.
It's as charming as it looks in the pictures. Sheila was extremely communicative and helpful. When we arrived the lights were on, very soothing music was playing and goodies awaited us in the refrigerator. I absolutely recommend this space to anyone visiting Portland. It had the same artsy funky vibe that Portland has to offer. Sheila also gave us recommendations of some live music venues that were only ten minutes away from her house. We were comfortable and truly enjoyed ourselves.
Great place. We were looking for a place that had two separate sleeping areas (my friend and I were visiting my son in Portland) and this was perfect. Also we wanted a place near the Hawthorne District (just a few blocks away) and had easy access to public transportation (a couple of blocks to the Belmont bus that runs frequently and can take you downtown very fast). The apartment was sunny and cheery and we very much appreciated the bottles of local brew which welcomed us after a hard day... More »
Sheila was a joy to work with. Any questions or concerns I had throughout the booking process were addressed quickly. The place was amazing and was warm and inviting. The entire experience was great and the place was clean.
Our stay at Sheila's charming "urban cabin" was great. It's a cozy place, simple yet stylish, and Sheila was very friendly and accommodating. A great Portland neighborhood and centrally located, too. We'd definitely stay here again.
I walked in and my favorite music was pllying (cowboy junkies), and there was a ottle of yummy wine after a long day of travel. She is a fantastic host!
What a wonderful home away from home - and what a wonderful host! The place is spacious, tidy and well-equipped, and in the perfect neighborhood to start an adventure to any of Portland's beautiful streets. Sheila was lovely. I'd recommend to anyone visiting this cute little city.
Very hospitable. We found tea, coffee, half and half and butter waiting for us in the kitchen. Add your own bread and eggs and you have breakfast. Spacious and charmingly decorated. Located around lots of bus lines which is great for a non-driver like me. If I get to go back to PDX, I would definitely book this place.
Sheila was very accommodating and friendly. She was quick to respond to every email and text we sent. She thoughtfully left us a couple of beers in the fridge, left music playing for when we arrived, and lots of magazines for our downtime. She left us ecofriendly bath products which was much appreciated. Free internet access made it easy for us to watch a little netflix at night. The apartment is in a nice neighborhood and is close to parks, a very inexpensive massage place, and food. A... More »
We had a fantastic stay in Portland. This place was so comfortable, it felt like we lived there from the moment we arrived. Sheila was awesome. Our schedules clashed so we didn't see each other, but she was available via text. She gave us tips on activities and was there for any questions. Great place!
The guesthouse did not disappoint in any way. As the pictures show, its an adorably decorated space on the main floor of an old Victorian house. Its sparkling clean, private, quiet, and filled with all sorts of thoughtful amenities to make your stay comfortable (from organic french press coffee to beverages in the fridge). In addition to a private bedroom, it also boosts a full kitchen and living area. Why anyone would choose to stay at a hotel over this place, I will never know. The... More »
Sheila was a wonderful hostess. She was available for whatever we needed, and was an intelligent, charming person. Do not hesitate to stay at her apt. The location is the best, close to buses and downtown. Alyce and Jeisa N.
I really enjoyed my time at the Buckman house! It's in a perfect location and is totally private. Sheila has exceptional taste and is very genuine and friendly. I'd come back in a heartbeat.
I can't say enough things about this gorgeous apartment and fantastic hostess. While Sheila and I never met, she made me feel so welcome and so at home during my stay in Portland. I arrived late at night to find soft music playing in the apartment and a bottle of wine and sweet note on the kitchen table. The apartment is huge and quaint and very colorful, with a lot of natural elements and eclectic decorations. You'll certainly never find a hotel room this lovely. Sheila left her bike for me... A fabulous way to experience Portland as close to being a local as possible. The apartment was delightful. Well-lit and just oozing with ambiance. Comfortable, cozy, and warm. We were a family of 3 here and found the place just perfect for our needs. The bedroom was romantic and enchanting. The twin bed had its own alcove away from the living area so everyone had a little bit of privacy and plenty of room. Sheila and Addie were equally delightful - charming just like their guest... Sheila was great! When our flight got delayed for a few days she helped us find another place because her place was booked for those days. Sheila thank you so much for everything you are lovely!
We absolutely loved staying here at Sheila's house. It was wonderful to be right in the heart of SE, only a quick walk from Burnside. The house was clean, beautiful, had a few amenities for us in the fridge as well. I will say that Stark Street is a little noisy, but it didn't keep me awake! Sheila even took the time to bring us a frying pan, and some extra towels. We will definitely be back!
We had an absolutely wonderful experience! The apartment was perfect: beautiful, clean and spacious. And a great location. Sheila is a most wonderful host: the apartment was stocked with all the basic necessities so we could have a drink & make some tea when we arrived later than expected our first evening. She also had useful bike maps & guides to help us explore, and she regularly checked in by email to make sure we had everything we needed. We were sad we didn't have more time to get to... More »
Sheila completely opened her home to us, it was a wonderful and welcoming time. The apartment is so cozy, charming and clean. It could not have been better, what a sweet person she is. Thank you Sheila!!
This was a GREAT place. Super fun colors and furniture, great all over style and lighting. Sheila was a great host too, really flexible and accommodating (we arrived to a welcome note and a bottle of wine)! It was also a nice quiet neighborhood and we didn't have any noise from upstairs. Would definitely recommend it.
We just returned home from a week in the Buckman house apartment. The space is large, cheery, spotless and has everything you need and nothing you don't. The fireplace was fantastic given the cold rainy icky late December weather (ok we're not used to winter Portland weather!)and Sheila was thoughtful and accommodating. The neighborhood is great for walking with interesting houses, coffee, park, and restaurants within a few blocks. (Navarre was fun) Thanks for a great week, we'll be back!
Thoroughly delightful stay in a creative, clean, spacious and warm home. Special touches included wood for fireplace, coffee and pitcher of cream in the fridge and two bottles of craft beer (i appreciated the former and my son the latter) all of which, along with Sheila's easygoing and open style, made arrival most welcoming and our entire visit a total pleasure. Highly recommend!
Sheila was a wonderful hostess; friendly and generous. Her place was clean and comfortable, and she thoughtfully left us amenities that we might need or enjoy - towels, dishes, soaps/shampoo/lotion, magazines, wood for the fireplace, extra bed sheets. She also recommended a fabulous restaurant for our first night in Portland.
Five stars. An attractive, large space in a convenient location.
Sheila's place is fabulous. Clean, great location and has everything you need to feel at home and entertain your local friends. Looking forward to our next stay!
Portland is a wonderful city, and Sheila's home was a great place to stay during my time here! The room was warm, cozy and unique. Sheila was very welcoming and thoughtful. The neighborhood itself is fun to explore, and I appreciated having easy access to public transportation - no need to rent a car! Thank you again, Sheila. I hope to come again!
The apartment was huge, lovely and centrally located in the southeast area. Sheila was a very responsive and thoughtful host. Its a great place to stay!
Our stay at Sheila's was wonderful. The space and bed are amazing, with great cooking facilities, the location is ideal, and Sheila is a perfect host -- great for a chat and guiding your way but gives you your space and privacy as well. Would definitely stay with her again! Thanks Sheila :)
I truly, truly loved my stay in Portland, and staying with Sheila enhanced my visit 100%. Location: Perfect for getting around—bus stop a short 5minutes away; and it's a pleasant, tree-lined walk to the colorful Hawthorne district. Her 1908 walk-up is filled with personality, color and warmth, and by warmth I don't just mean the marvelous heaters that kept this tropical girl toasty. Sheila loves life and it shows. She loves meeting people; It's as if I've known her forever. She will... More »
The Buckman apt is super close to downtown Portland and other great neighborhoods. The neighborly feeling makes it an even better place to stay than downtown. I really enjoyed spending the day relaxing in the massive old fashioned claw foot tub and reading on the couch! Very quiet and peaceful and a good way to experience what is great about the "real" Portland! Sheila is a very kind and gracious host. My 2.5 year old daughter even slept well, which is rare for her when we are away from... More »
Sheila was great! From the moment I arrived she made me feel right at home. Her place on 16th was right near the bus stops so getting into downtown Portland was a breeze, and Apt C was a great place to come back to each night after a long day. Thanks so much for having me Sheila , if I am every back out in Portland I hope I get a change to stay again!
Sheila was an incredibly generous and hospitable hostess! She took exceptional care of my dear friend and her three year-old while they were in town for my wedding from NYC. Her location is ideal for walking as well as access to public transportation. Staying with Sheila in her simple spacious home offers any guest a unique Portland experience! I highly recommend her!
Sheila provided a very cozy room in her home. She was extremely flexible with my schedule needs and hospitable.
This was my first time in Portland, and I felt I was welcomed into the stream of things here like a regular thanks to Sheila. If you want to feel stuffy, shuffled, and alien, there are hotels...for the rest, there's Sheila.
The 2 weeks I have just spent at Sheila's wonderful appartment were without a doubt some of the happiest and yummiest (Portland is for foodies of all kinds and without the big city prizes) of my entire life (and I've travelled and eaten all over the world). Sheila manages to strike the perfect balance between giving both attention and privacy whilst being quick to respond at all times. If I could have taken the big purple living room sofa home to London with me I would have - it was the... More »
Sheila is a very wonderful and gracious host! She is very helpful and cares about people and the community. The place was very nice and convenient, and has classic Portland features. It is a great area to experience what Portland is about. Highly recommended!
The 16th Street Walk Ups were the perfect place to start our vacation. Close to public transit, beautiful neighborhood, and the place fit us exactly. Sheila was helpful, friendly, and even gave us a ride to the train station upon our departure!
Sheila was a lovely host, easygoing and relaxed but then also always around when you need her, and always up for a chat with a glass of wine if you catch her when she's not organising something!! At the moment I'm sitting in the sunshine in Jackson Hole, on her recommendation as I did not exactly know where I was going next. I thoroughly enjoyed staying with her and enjoyed our chats and wine more - I hope to see her in my home turf (Amsterdam) sometime soon! SJ.
Sheila was a generous and fantastic host - I felt welcome and at home. The apartment is in a great neighborhood and has true Portland charm - vintage and unique. I wouldn't hesitate to stay with Sheila again. I had never used airbnb before, and staying with Sheila added a truly positive dimension to my Portland visit.
I had a very comfortable 3 nights stay at the Lovely Buckman. The neighborhood has a good feel to it, and I was able to catch a bus downtown and back with just a short 2 block walk. When I said I wanted to buy some coffee to bring home, Shelia tipped me off to a local coffee roaster nearby, and so I went there and took part in a "cupping" activity and which was a lot of fun (and I drank like 5 cups of coffee for free!) I felt at home at the Buckman.
We liked Sheila's place. It was CLEAN, roomy, quiet, comfortable and in a fun neighbourhood. There was jazz on the radio and a couple of welcoming beers in the fridge when we arrived. We enjoyed watching all the pushbikes zoom by while enjoying a few evening drinks from our verandah. Great value, we would definitely stay again.
We loved the apartment so much and Sheila was a great host! The building has tons of character and is well looked after. It's also close to fantastic places to eat and easily accessible to downtown. We would love to stay there again and wish that it could've been for longer! Thanks Sheila!
I loved staying here. Sheila was super nice and super helpful. She went out of her way to take me to Lloyd's Center so that I could get a day pass for the Tri-Met. The room was very comfy and cute!! I would def stay here again!
Sheila was awesome, the place was great and the location can't be beat. Walking distance to a couple fun neighborhoods and central to all SE, NE and downtown spots. Highly recommended. Be back next Summer for sure!
Wonderful!
Sheila is great! What can't be said of her or her place?! Wonderful conversation, recommendations, hospitality, location...the list goes on. Such an engaging and friendly personality, detailed, and thoughtful. Made me feel right at home. Stayed in both the guest house apartment and private room and recommend both highly. Thank you for a wonderful stay Sheila!

Sheila was a wonderful host. Her "walk-up" two-story wooden building is located in a beautiful, leafy neighborhood within walking and bus distance or easy biking / car distance of a wonderful neighborhood. It was like staying with a caring, warm family member in their big charming rambling house. The house only has one bathroom but it didn't feel crowded. I hardly ever saw the other tenants. It was dead quiet at night and the layout of the house lends you a lot of privacy. It felt very safe... More »
Sheila was a fantastic host! She stocked the fridge with craft beer, Starbucks coffee, all the little touches that made our pleasant stay a little more special. The apt. is cute although a little run down, bedding could use an update and better pillows but overall it was a great deal. The house is in a quiet area in a great central location on a lovely tree lined street. Would definitely stay again*
I had a very nice time visiting with Sheila and we had a lot in common. It was nice to stay in a home rather than in a hotel, it was quiet and welcoming. I did like having a sink in my bedroom, it made it easier to leave my stuff out. It was my first time using airbnb and I would certainly use it again.
Sheila is amazing! We had a great time in her lovely place and she made us feel very welcome. The house is in a really nice & quiet area about 20 minutes walk from downtown. Sheila went out of her way to help with directions etc and made our stay in Portland a total pleasure. Thanks Sheila!
Sheila did a great job of staying in touch and providing info that was helpful. The room was inviting and just fine for my one night stay. She also showed me the larger apartment which was lovely and which I would be glad to make a home away from home next time I am in Portland. Something that would have been helpful that wasn't provided was a drinking glass. Another thing that would have been helpful was an overview of the situation as being part transient (as I was) and part permanent... More »
the host! the house! the hood! sheila could not be cooler or easier to stay with in her classic southeast housebuilding; tall and spacious with amazing peaceful energy, history and stories to come. big room. comfy bed. quiet with nice airflow. fast wifi. i lived on se 16th for several years. this was just like being home again. thanks sheila! see you soon.
Loved staying here! Very affordable and right by the bus lines! I spent most of my time in downtown and it was easy to come and go from.
Sheila was a superior host and we had a great time. The place was clean, neat, well equipped, and even romantic. The location was also excellent and we walked everywhere including the local restaurants and shops and across the bridge to downtown Portland.
The Buckman Guesthouse is a beautiful spot in a great SE location. Shelia covers all of the details. When we entered there was jazz playing, flowers in the bedroom and a little card in the kitchen welcoming us. It may look a bit shabby on the outside, but when you walk in it is a beautiful place. I would recommend it to my friends. Thanks!
Sheila was lovely and very accommodating. The house was a few blocks from heaps of excellent vegan places which was awesome for me. About a 30 minute walk to the city, but there's a bus you can take also which is really quick.
This was such a great find! The apartment is super cute, central, and cozy. Sheila was very helpful and accommodating and made us feel right at home. I would definitely (and will most likely) stay here again!
Sheila and her daughter are the perfect hostesses! The room is neat and clean and more than adequate for a lovely stay in Portland. While I was concerned about sharing a bathroom, it turned out to be no problem at all. The house is in the hip SE quadrant of Portland...close to great eating, brew pubs and local art. Recommend!
Sheila's place is so charming --- not only do you get a clean bed, shower, kitchen, cozy living room, she also leaves extra comforts everywhere: teas, mouisturizers... lovely!
We loved our stay at the Buckman Guest House! The apartment is spacious and well cared for. Sheila was very responsive, friendly, and welcoming. Couldn't have been happier with our stay and look forward to returning!
Sheila was awesome. She is very easy to talk to and makes you feel right at home. Her knowledge of the area is really helpful and she can tell you the places / things worth doing if you are unfamiliar with the city. The place itself couldn't be in a better location. It is only 2 blocks or so from great coffee, dining, and shopping. The room was exactly what I needed and was clean and quite. The mattress was so comfortable I almost wanted to spend the entire time in bed! Overall, I couldn't... More »
The space at Sheila's Buckman Guest House is quite generous, a complete apartment. It is a charming classic old building evoking turn-of-the century character in the spirit of a grand old Portland working class neighborhood. There are a number of fun and good eating and drinking establishments within easy walking distance in the neighborhood where one can enjoy the friendly and casual local environment. As it was over 90+ degrees the night we stayed, our only comment/suggestion would be to... More »
The only negative thing I can say about staying at Sheila's place is I didn't want to leave!! Sheila is fantastic and I feel like I made an immediate friend with her, which is great when you're traveling all by yourself in a new place. I could hardly have felt more welcome than if I were visiting my own family. And I like my family! The room itself was very clean, comfortable and quiet. Sheila has a wonderful porch with a comfy couch outside that was surrounded by beautiful, old trees... More »
Sheila was a great host and the apartment is in a wonderful neighborhood. It is very close to a park, and within biking distance of most places in Portland. Parking was easy and the place was spacious and clean. We would definitely like to stay here again.
Sheila is the hostess with the mostest. Her pad is classic Old School Portland awesomeness. Clean, spacious, and convenient to some of the best stuff close-in Southeast Portland has to offer.
I loved staying here and would stay again if in Portland again. I liked the neighborhood, parking was easy for my rental car, the apartment was huge & comfy. One note is that there's not a lot of stuff for cooking in the kitchen right now (I'm writing in June 2010), for example I couldn't find a saute pan, so if you were planning on doing a lot of cooking here I'd check with the owner, Sheila, first. She was very helpful and accomodating by the way.
Sheila was very flexible to my arrival on the first night and even helped me negotiate a change in my public transportation route from the Portland Airport. Her location can't be beat! Her obvious ties to both the friendly streets and the walk-up conversations she has with neighbors had me feeling like a local the moment I arrived. Look for more options as her charming boarder's building has a lot of room for expansion. Her eye for color and understated decor cool moves you through the space... More »
Shelia is a great host. She welcomed us into her home and introduced us to her friends. And there was wine. We really couldn't have been happier with our stay :)
Sheila is absolutely amazing. She offered to pick me up at the train station and the stay at her place was completely unforgettable. Any one who is looking to have fun in Portland, and then "go home" at the end of their day, should definitely stay here. Simply put, while attending an out of state conference, I felt as if I was not out of state and instead, going home at the end of the day. Thank you, Sheila for all of your comfort and hospitality.
For our very first time renting our place Sheila was the perfect guest. In fact, I would really love to host her again! The place was as clean as it was when we left it and she even left some yummy treats for us when we got back! She also included some very helpful feedback that will make our place even better for the next person that rents it. Overall an A+ guest!
December 2011Sheila and her daughter were a treat. I hope to stay at her place in Portland one of these days.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting with Sheila and Addie. They are thoughtful and fun guests. I would enjoy having them come again.
I had the delightful experience of hosting Sheila and her daughter Addie one night. They arrived as new friends, we got to know each other, sharing with joy and understanding, and when they left I felt that we were old friends. I hope to have the pleasure to spend time with them again. Gro Lent
Shiela is a wonderful bright woman, I'm so happy that I have met her! Addie, her daughter is an up and come young girl who will make a difference in this world. It is evident that Shiela is a caring devoted mother! Linda
