The "Casa del Salinero" is dated 1889 and was the former residence of worker of the saltworks. Preserving the canarian construction style, the old cottage has been renovated as rural housing. Wide stone walls protect from the wind and the eternal sun, providing the perfect temperature.
The cottage is originally build according the canarian style. The wide walls are a combination of beach stones and a mix of materials where sand predominates. This particular way of building creates an harmony with the exterior landscape and a rustic and pleasant atmosphere inside.

Surrounded by autochthonous flora, the simplicity of the house invites you to relax, to enjoy the contact with the earth, the water, the air, the nature...
During the night, the lack of luminous contamination lets you see the intense heaven, to the last star. And full moon nights turns into magic evenings with the light of the candles. It's worth it to get up early and be delight in the sunrise. In the afternoon, the sun hides behind the mountains dying everything gold.

If you're looking for tranquility in touch with nature and sea, this is your place. You won't find tourist terraces, nor beach bars nearby.
Just the cottage, the sea and you.

Interaction with guests

Check in: Guests will be welcomed DURING THE DAY at a meeting point to go together the final way to the house. RENTAL CAR is a must.

Check out: Time will be arranged to return the keys.

The neighborhood

Casa Salinero is located only 8 km away from the airport. Framed in a natural salt mine Bocacangrejo, Playa de Vargas, Agüimes. The Southeast area is not a touristic area, the main activity in this area is agriculture. Courgettes, cabbages, potatoes and tomatoes grow in greenhouses protected from the sun and wind. Access to the cottage through a rustic area shows authentic Canarian village which has nothing to do with the great hotels in the south of the island.

The location of the house lets you get rid of urban pollution, enjoying a surprisingly quietness. Still, it is very close to "civilization" and easily accessible to establishments such as restaurants, pharmacies, gas stations and beaches. If you want to take a walk, you can go to El Burrero beach, a small fishers village. Another nearby beach is Playa de Vargas or Cabrón beach, where you can even scubba dive. Arinaga is a small coastal town nearby, with local tourism, sandy beaches and a natural pool, el Zoco del Negro. Agüimes, a charming village, is just 10km and is easily accessible.

Getting around

GETTING BY RENTAL CAR IS A MUST. No buses or taxis around.

The privileged location of Casa Salinero gives easy access to the roads that connect major cities, giving the opportunity to enjoy the various entertainment options available on the island.
Surfers, windsurfers and kitesurfers are privileged. If you are a lover of the wind and waves in Casa Salinero, the sea is 40 meters away from the house. A treat for those who want to take advantage of every last second of the day. Playa de Vargas and Pozo Izquierdo, home of the International Windsurfing Championship, are two of the nearby places for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Other things to note

Since the house is within a private property, there's no specific signs to get there and it's not possible to get alone. The final way is a rustic road among greenhouses and the key is needed to open a gate.
Guests will be picked up at the meeting point to go together the final way to the house.

Lovely house! We did not rent a car contrary to other reviews and had no trouble getting around. We walked to the nearest towns then would take the bus if there was somewhere far away we wanted to go. Otherwise we would walk. That being said, if you hate walking you should stick with a car. The nearby town was cute and had a nice beach- all in all the area was very nice. The house was pretty and had all of the necessities. I would say our only complaint was the wifi! We could not get it to work whatsoever the whole trip and consequently spent a ton of money on data overage on our phones. Not sure why- we were trying to use it on a Mac and on iPhones and it wouldn't work for a simple search but it seemed to work on Nadia's iPad fine. All in all a very nice outdoorsy trip! It was a good spot of the island to be at- we spent a few day trips on the north and south shores and they were very touristy. Glad we chose a spot in the middle of the island!

I'm glad you enjoyed your holidays at the house, despite the fact you insisted in not getting a car as advised. Regarding wifi, let's say that's not the highlight of this house. Being isolated on the shore, no company will give land internet. The internet connection is a well intended effort that we do with an aerial 4G connection (for free). It works to check mails, social networks, even videos online. You saw it worked on mi tablet... Anyway, you were lovely guests and I'm happy you liked the area. Thanks for leaving the house clean and tidy.

Quite simply we loved Casa Salinero. If you are looking for commercialism, with lots of bars and restaurants, and the height of luxury, this is NOT the place for you. But if, like us, you want complete escapism, basic but clean and comfortable accommodation, and just a stone throw from the sea, you will find it hard to find anywhere better. The first time along the long bumpy unmade private road does make you wonder where on earth you are going to end up - but how else would you get to be in the middle of nowhere, away from the masses?! The accommodation is basic, but everything has been thought of - from the kitchen (with washing up liquid, herbs and spices, cooking oil, matches, etc) to the hammock, outdoor rug, BBQ and even binoculars! Nadia is the perfect host - friendly, approachable, informative and knowledgable, but she doesn't pester you at all. So, was there a downside?....Only that we didn't want to come home!

Oh, Tania! I have chills reading this. Seriously, the biggest reward is finding people who shares the same feeling about the important things in life. I'm really happy you had a good time here. And you can always come back! :D

The house was awesome! It looks exactly like on the internet pictures. Nadia was great, very nice and friendly. she took us to the house, because its a little bit difficult to find the first time. The house is very nice. A huge kitchen, fully equiped. We prepared 90% of our meals in the house and grilled very often. Supermarkets are close and cheap. It's a perfect place to relax. We stayed for 4 weeks. We had two questions during our stay and Nadia replied fast through and helped us. I would always come back. A pretty place to stay on the island, far away from the touristic areas. Car is requiered though, but this is also the best way to discover Gran Canaria.

Our host Nadia was great - very accessible before and during the stay in her lovely house. She shared lots of information about what to do and where to go. The house is very private and that was just what we needed - rest and relaxation - and freedom it felt like. The house was like a 'home from home' for us - very well equipped and lots of little things thought about, like provision of beach towels, and all the equipment in the kitchen. The house itself and the area is very authentic - wherever we travelled to, which was very local to Nadia's place, we did not meet many tourists at all. So overall we got just what was described and needed. Our only other comment was that the three quarter of a mile off road track to the house was a little daunting to drive in the dark, so this inhibited us slightly in the evening - though that's just us, and others would be fine with this. Of course, being this far from the road also offers considerable privacy. The immediate surroundings in front of the house are beautiful, the sea, the small garden, the old windmill. The backdrop (which cannot be seen from the house) is quite a sad one of many derelict agricultural greenhouses and land - sad, because it seemed a sign of the economic times where farmers were not able to continue working. There is a lovely small village and beach in very close proximity, 15-20 minutes walk away along the sea front. We visited this several times, either walking or by car on our way back from other places - everywhere on the island is very reachable by car. Overall, we had a rest and a break which is exactly what we needed in a very lovely house - thank you Nadia. PS The hammock in the picture is very, very comfortable!

Thank you Lorraine! You've been lovely guests too. It's good that you found in Casa Salinero exactly what the description says and that was what you were expecting. It's true, though, that the surroundings of the road to get to the house might be unexpected with some abandoned greenhouses. But, as I said on the description, this is not touristic, but the real Gran Canaria. Unfortunately there's nothing I can do to improve what is not mine :( But I'm very happy you enjoyed the house and had a good time in Gran Canaria. You're welcome to come back anytime :)

We stayed at this charming small house in the middle of June. As we arrived the scent of the sea and the lovely cottage amongst the salines welcomed us, away from the crowds and tourism. 10 fantastic days that we spent between the Melanara’s beaches, the Teror’s ancient houses and the Casa Salinero’s magical atmosphere, including sun, wind and perfect peace. Absolutely recommended for those who love peace and quiet, with basic facilities and an incomparable view to dominate the skyline, not for those seeking luxury. A hug and a goodbye to Nadia. Very nice and calm place. My family and I enjoyed the week we spent here. It is a good place to use as base for visiting the island (by car) and also a great place to have relaxed evenings eating seafood and canarian potatoes. Nadia is a great host, friendly and quick to reply to any questions. Only issue we had was that the wifi didn't really work that well. It came on at times but was mostly off. However that was not so important since we could use mobile internet (roaming) for the very few times we needed something online.

Response from Nadia:
Thank you Gustav, you left the place in perfect conditions. I apologise for the internet, but no company gives a wired service to the house by the beach. The instalation and conection is a well intended effort from us to give the 3G internet service from the office to the guests at the house. And unfortunatly sometimes it fails... :(

First of all, Nadia was an excellent communicator and kept us well-informed prior to arrival. On arrival we met her near the property and she guided us along the track/off-road access to the property. This is a little bumpy, and I wasn't sure whether this was ideal for a Fiat Panda. The property is quite isolated, which is nice, so well-away from the touristy parts. It is fairly basic - though it has a reasonably-well equipped kitchen (electric hob, microwave, sizable fridge/freezer, cutlery, crockery, pans, etc) though this is separately locked from the main house. In the main part there are two rooms (bedroom, sitting room) and a small shower room. The shower room is very small and only has hot water to the shower, not the sink. It all works, however. The bedroom has a double bed and a cot. In the sitting room there are two sofa/beds, but realistically I think I would describe this as a three person accommodation rather than the up to six as described. Internet connection is reasonable and I was also pleased to e able to use my mobile phone, so despite the isolation it is reasonably-well connected. Staying next to the salt pans gave an interesting outlook on the traditional ways of Gran Canaria. We used the washing machine once which works well, and the barbecue twice - this is a little precarious, so if you use it site it carefully so the legs don't give way! Downsides? well getting in and out is a little tedious (access, gates) and the wind turbines can be a little noisy as can the occasional approaching aircraft. Still, we really enjoyed our visit and would likely return, but I might consider a slightly less isolated place like the nearby Arinaga which is also a convenient location (near to airport, near main roads to explore the beautiful island) but has the added advantage that you can walk to restaurants and fill up on the glorious Canarian food/wine/beer and enjoy the amenities without having to drive so far...

Response from Nadia:
I'm glad you enjoyed your time in Gran Canaria. I think the description of the house makes clear that the house is isolated, in a private property enclosed in a natural landscape. It's originally from 1880, like the saltworks, which explains the separated kitchen. The access to the house it's the access to the greenhouses around, not a private road to the house. It's bumpy, but perfectly doable with any car if you don't run fast (and that's the aim of leaving it like that). Once I received 6 people and they were perfectly fine and enjoyed the house and the sourrondings. However, I agree with you that's why I changed the capacity to maximun 4 guests long time ago. Of course staying in Arinaga is a very good choice (I have more apartments there and I recommend it), but it's a completely different concept: it would be urban, while Casa Salinero is 100% wild nature were you can see stars at night with no light contamination at all, for example. Thanks a lot for leaving the house in such perfect conditions. You were nice guests :)
